Husband and I are seeking a rental home. We found a nice house and the landlord has invited us to apply. Last time we applied for rental the property manager had us do a credit/background check via an online service.
This new landlord gave us a paper form asking for SSN, DOB, our checking and savings account numbers, employment history, and other info. The landlord is an older person with a couple investment properties. I'm sure this is not a scam, but I am reluctant to hand all my ID and bank numbers to a stranger.
Advice? Anyone know a simple, reputable online background checking service that I can suggest to this landlord? We would pay the fee.
My goal is to make the landlord comfortable so we can lease the house. The Seattle rental market is very tight. This landlord has his pick of many worthy applicants. We have excellent credit, references, etc.

My partner and I have saved a deposit of $50,000 to put down on a house. We're looking for a one bed flat around the Gastown area of Vancouver BC, which we may end up renting out while we move to the US for a couple of years for work, but I have no idea how to go about this. [more inside]

My brother rents a property in Virginia and after a storm four months ago, a massive tree was struck by lightning and fell and is now blocking their driveway. They are still able to drive through the yard to get to the house but the landlord has been dragging his feet to remedy this situation. What can he do? [more inside]
The townhome that my SO and I paid a deposit on was rented out from under us by the owner, who did so not only behind our back, but behind the back of the property management company that they contracted with. What is the best way to proceed here? [more inside]

I am looking to find out overall statistics for property rentals in NY for 2009-2010. I am trying to write a letter to prevent a rent hike and I want to fill it with some statistics to help better illustrate my point. Thanks in advance.
Our apartment was damaged on Friday, and the whole floor needs to come out, possibly some of the drywall too. The property manager needs us to vacate, and remove all of our stuff, for an extended period of time (1-2 months). (Note that we have been dealing with the property manager, and to a lesser extent, the superintendent, and not our landlord.) How much notice is he legally required to give us? We live in Toronto. YANAL. [more inside]

I own a house. Boyfriend lives with me, pays me "rent" to help out with my mortgage. He wants to claim his rent payments on his taxes. But I don't want to be his landlord -- at least, I don't want the IRS to think I'm a landlord. What to do? [more inside]
