Strategy to proofread document from OCR

I have a document in English of about 1500 pages that was originally derived from OCR scans of varying quality. I've proofread manually and by spell-check. What is the best strategy to eliminate the remaining errors? [more inside]

How can I improve my computer screen reading experience?

I do a lot of proofreading for work, but it's a struggle compared to proofreading hard copies. I already use f.lux to cut down on eye strain, and browser plugins to make text more readable, but I find I'm still straining to keep my eyes from bouncing all over the place. Help! [more inside]

Proofreadingfilter - how to mark up web pages?

Hi folks, I'm a proofreader and I've been working almost exclusively in print for the last ten years or so. However, the inevitable has happened and my squad is being asked to integrate into a pre-existing digital workflow that hasn't previously had any external quality control. Any tips on how to make this easier for everybody involved? [more inside]

I make mistakes. Does that mean I’m not cut out to be a proofreader?

I am very dissatisfied with my career trajectory (it may be laughable to even call it that) and I’m wondering if it is because I am doing something that I really have no aptitude for. Is there really such a thing as an "error-free" proofreader? [more inside]

How can I "autocorrect" an entire document at once?

I have some large documents that are riddled with errors (I am copy/pasting from PDFs), and correcting each error is prohibitively time consuming. Is there a resource that will autocorrect the entire document in one sweep? Right now it is just a Google Drive document, but I can convert to Word, etc. Thanks for any tips.

That's SanDeE* with a star

Sometimes I have to edit a document that contains many instances of the same proper name, such as a story about a person named Scheindler. Is there an easy way to get Word (or another program that I could paste the document into) to indicate any instances that are clearly trying to be Scheindler, but aren't (Schindler or Schiendler or Sheindler)? Can you tell me your personal story or know more than me?

Almost 60, physically disabled (can still drive and walk) male on disability. What jobs can I get to supplement my income? I've read the posts here and googled 'til I can't see straight. I was thinking proofreading, medical billing, delivering pizza etc. I looked into Leapforce and Guru but didn't go to college. I worked in the service industry -electric, alarms, building maintenance- never sat at a desk but am computer semi literate, thanks. Thanks.

Who proofs the proofreaders?

I'm a professional copy editor who has been blessed with an intern with good instincts and grammatical understanding, but needs to learn the techniques of the craft. Right now I'm just reviewing her work and discussing her mistakes/omissions as they arise, but I'd like to do more formalized instruction. Can anyone recommend a lesson plan? [more inside]

Technical editing: if repeating a figure within a document, do you repeat the figure number or use a different number for the second occurrence of the figure?

I am editing a technical document that contains figures. One of these figures is referred to twice (on pages 13 and 33). What is the accepted way of dealing with this?

I want to show the figure twice, with different figure numbers. I think this will make it easy for the reader to see what's being referenced in both places. It doesn't bother me if the same picture has different figure numbers associated with it on different pages. It does, however, bother my boss, who wants to either show the figure only once and refer back to it in the second reference, or show it twice and use the same figure number in both places. (Have I explained that clearly enough?) (Chicago Manual of Style doesn't seem to address this.)
