How do I dress like a A.V. Geek?

I want to look like an Audio Visual geek, circa 1955, for New Years. Please help with clothing suggestions. This New Year's Eve bash is a prom themed "Enchantment Under the Sea -Circa 1955" dance. (No, Marvin Berry cannot make it)

Formal attire and a date is encouraged. Well, I am going stag, and I am the professional photographer for the dance. No joke: I will be taking profesionally posed shots in front of a cheesy-ass background, just like a regular prom.

So, I figured I would go as an A.V. geek. (I dont really have the time or money to figure out a tuxedo.)

So far, I have Army issue khakis and loafers. I am a man.

What else comes to mind, Metafites?

Any variations that would go with the theme is welcomed. Thanks guys!

What's a good high school prom venue in NYC?

Can anyone suggest a good venue for a high school senior prom in New York City? I've just been selected as next year's Senior Advisor, and I've been advised to book the prom location before the school year starts. We're a fairly large (3000-3500 students total) public high school, and I think we could expect 150-250 people to attend prom. Tickets should probably be in the $100-$200 per student range. Ideas floated so far include the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, Russo's on the Bay, and Tavern on the Green (they all look a little too expensive to me, but I hear we did Tavern a few years back -- I really have no idea what to expect anything to cost).

If you've planned or attended a prom in the city (Brooklyn or Manhattan), I'm especially interested in your input -- thanks!

Where can I get an amazing retro dress?

My university is having a prom / formal dance for grad students. (woot) Where can I (and my friends) get AWESOME retro ironic dresses? We'll check out the local thrift shops, but any websites that you know of that sell vintage '80s dresses for cheap? Link to event.

Miami Vice blazer

PromAttireFilter: Have one (1) White linen, 2-button blazer from the mid to late 1980s. What to add? I refuse to follow this tuxedo indoctrination.
Prom rental tuxedos look silly, as they never fit very well, and vests piss me off.

So, I have this cool, snow white, perry ellis blazer from I'd say...1986. I figured I'd go with that.

So, what do do now?
Black pants, shirt, tie?
White tie?
White...BOWTIE?

And shoes! What do I do about shoes...

Suggestions on where to purchase in NYC would be quite helpful...

Prom dress for a nerd

I need advice on constructing a suitably nerdy prom dress. As a joke, partially at my expense, I was elected to prom court. To continue the joke, I need to do something really goofy for a dress. I was thinking of making one out of duct tape, but I'm not entirely sure how I could make one that was comfortable and actually looks like a dress, not a mummy costume. I'm also open to suggestions for other materials, provided I can still move about while I'm wearing my prom costume.
So, how would you go about making a dress for a girl who builds robots in her spare time?

What's the big deal with Homecoming?

Are Prom and Homecoming really such big deals in American high school life as they appear on TV? The girl and I live in Canada, and we're always just a little bit mystified when Prom and/or Homecoming or whatever are featured in television and movies. (Most recent of many, many examples: watching Heroes this afternoon.)

Is it really the big deal that it's made out to be, with the limos and the $500 dresses and everything? And is it prevalent everywhere in the US? According to wikipedia, it's common in Canada too, but we've never heard of a school actually having them (we're in Alberta though; it might be different out east).

I say it's mostly an artifact of Hollywood, or at most a manufactured tradition a la Valentine's Day. She says there's got to be more to it if all the teen magazines have super-special prom editions etc.

At the risk of descending into chatfilter, please help me understand this bizarre phenomenon and tell me what's it like where you live.

What is an excellent way to ask my girlfriend to prom? I am a senior in high school and need to (in a romantic, inexpensive, and creative way) ask my girlfriend of a year and a half to prom. What are your ideas?

Please, nothing too cheesy.

Prom Help

My high school prom is coming up. I am a senior and am going to graduate this year. I plan to go, but cannot work up the courage to ask this certain girl to go with me. I did not go to the prom my junior year, due to money problems and the fact that I didn't have a date. All the friends that I have that are female all say that I'm good looking, but they all have dates (and I have no interest in them other than being friends). So that may not be an issue for me.

The real problems are that this one girl that I'm very interested in knows me somewhat (she's a client at the tanning salon I work at after school, as well as the Blockbuster in front of the salon), so I'm not sure if I should ask her outright. The other problem is that when I do try to ask her, I completely balk as soon as I see her. I don't think she knows that I'm interested. I also have a real hard time talking to girls I like; when I do have the guts to initiate conversation, I never know what to say and feel like crap.

Any advice on what I should do and any advice on growing balls big enough to be able to ask her/talk to her, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
