How can I seal my home-made steel smoker? It's made out of a never-used oil drum, shaped like a giant flask. The problem is that the hatch, while large enough to cover the opening, doesn't form a perfect seal because of the body's curvature. Imperfect seal = imperfect smoking. What kind of material can take the medium heat of smoking, is non-toxic (no fiberglass!), and is slightly soft, to mold itself to the surface?

DevFilter: For those of you who have started large-scale software development projects, what worked during the initial design & framework stages? Did UML->C++ work for the class framework? Was UML remotely worth it (my first instinct is no, but I've never done a project this big before). Other ideas? Things you'd do differently next time?

I'm working on a patio project at home, and I'm trying to calculate the square footage of an area that's in the shape of an irregular pentagram.
It's about 19ft 6 inches long at it's base, and then has measurements of 70", 93", 43", and 16ft (192in).
Is there a utility online I can use to calculate this area, or possibly a feature in Visio that I can use to do this with?
Many thanks in advance for any time you take to post.

In the song "Sour Times" by Portishead, there is a bizarre stringed instrument with percussive elements in the background. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what it is.

Suppose I have an idea for a potentially interesting art/music/programming project. I can envision what needs to happen and can put it into concrete terms but lack the programmatic and music theory chops (I'm a designer & photographer type person) to realize it on my own. Where can I find like minded folks that might be interested in collaborating on this art for art's sake project?

I've got a coding project, which will make me a bazillion dollars if I can pull it off. But I'm having trouble starting it, partially because I'm not a well-trained programmer, and partially becuase I'm unsure of whether to seek help.

I am looking for a simple way to keep a client informed on what projects I am working on for them, and what their current status is. A service like Basecamp is a possibility, but it is much more than I need. Their free TaDa list site is useful, but too simple. I need something a bit more informative, but easy to maintain. Any suggestions?

I saw a cool microcontroller project on slashdot, and dredged up my old dream of making an open-source, open-spec competitor to the GameBoy. Surely somebody else out there is doing that kind of thing (not GameBoy programming, but making entirely different handheld game devices).
What's the best forum, resource, or website to pursue information about this kind of project?

I need a CMS recommendation. I've been asked to find and set up a suitable content management system to be used by software and hardware developers for a project here at work. It needs to have good CVS and bug tracking modules. [mi]

I have been assigned as Project Manager for a project to design our company website. In order to understand how it will be navigated and ensure that all the project stakeholders understand its high-level structure, we will need to create a sitemap / site outline. Can anyone recommend any software or methodology ( sticky-notes on a wall? ) for doing this? I have tried using Visio, and it just seems too cumbersome.

anyone made their own speaker mounts for walls? i can't find any to buy here and am considering what i can make myself (i don't own a welder, but could buy one and have done welding in the past - i also have assorted woodworking/handyman tools). i'm assuming that a fairly rigid mount is important for sound quality, would like it to look good, probably be adjustable for toe-in, and the speakers are fairly large/heavy (b&w 602s2). advice, please.
