I am interested in hearing personal experiences with deciding to end a project. How did other people react to the news? How did that make you feel? What did you do? What do you think you should have done differently?

I want to contribute with my programming ability (software developer) to free software. I could be developing another tower defense game but prefer a small project which might be mildly useful to somebody and possibly teaches me something outside of programming.
What would be a useful to you and a good project for me?

Two years ago I started doing stand-up comedy, which took me very far from my comfort zone and was hard work but was hugely rewarding. One year ago I took a one-way flight to Thailand to start a solo backpacking trip, something I'd always wanted to do but which terrified me - this was also hard work but fantastic and life-affirming. These were both huge things for me. I want to begin something similarly big/difficult/scary/rewarding/exciting/life-affirming this year that will live up to those first 2 years, but what?

I'm looking for a project that can be done mostly on the computers at my school. I'm usually there for 8-9 hours waiting for a ride, and my schoolwork takes me around an hour to finish. I'd like to put the rest of that free-time towards something productive.

I am using MS Visual Studio 2008 to create a software package. I saved all the source code and what (I thought) I needed so I could format the machine and install the Win7 Update as a fresh OS. After reinstalling the VS2008 compilers, now the project will not compile.

I am looking for an email management program (like campaign monitor) that also includes email analytics (like google analytics) and project management tools (like basecamp). I am in a small marketing department at a non-profit that relies heavily on email (100K+/month messages sent).
My google-fu has failed me so far, I can't find anything that has all three components. Does anyone know of a one stop shop that does this? Also open to a using several programs as long as we can get them to work with each other.

I am working with several other people to seek sponsorship for a non-profit event. There is a fairly simple but lengthy series of actions that needs to be completed to track each unique sponsor. We've thought about having a binder with a printed page showing tasks for each sponsor, but it would be preferable if there was an online solution any of us can access for checking off and date-stamping completed tasks, with a place to add notes.

My employer is running out of cash, in debt to suppliers, and has had trouble meeting payroll several times this year. My gut says I'll be out of work in a couple weeks, a month at the most. I'm working on and managing several web development projects where a deposit has been provided by the client, but we're several months away from completion. Do I approach the clients, let them know the situation and propose completing the projects on my own for the remaining amount of the project?
