How do I (or we) speak to my manager about his increasing lack of involvement in what we feel are the core components of a product's (re)launch, especially when the stakes in the launch include: our careers, the fate of the company, and the jobs of fellow colleagues in the office?

I am mentoring a college kid who wants to be a programmer. I am detail-oriented; he does the
bare minimum required to get the job done, but he gets things done. Am I right to push him toward thinking about doing project management rather than hands-dirty techie-developer type stuff? Or is he just lazy and needing to be schooled?

I Know some C++ and Python, but I don't know enough about algorithms to really implement the project, a fairly simple web app, I have in mind. So I'm wondering if it's possible to divide the problem up appropriately, write good app specs, then use Rent a Coder or a similar service for the hard stuff.
