PhD thesis woes - what do I tell my supervisor?

I am in the final year of my PhD. I suffered from many months of depression and an inability to get my writing done in a timely fashion. I am now playing catch-up. I have a telephone appointment with my supervisor next week, and wonder if and how I should disclose the difficulty I faced, and am still facing. I don't want to burden her with my personal issues. How do I, or should I, discuss this? How do I regain her faith in me? [more inside]

Two steps forward, one step backwards

I'm looking for examples that illustrate a particular concept: that a technological / social advance is often accompanied by a kind of regression to earlier practices, until people work out how to exploit the benefits of that advance. Help me nail down this rather nebulous idea! [more inside]

What is the Folk Web?

I'm looking for 'Folk' Web Cultures. I am thinking of the recent take-down of Geocities, which seemed to refresh people's love of the naff, kitsch aesthetic it was famous for, as a prime example. What are some other folk cultures still lingering in the dark corners of the web? [more inside]

Internal Relationship Struggle in the Face of Healthy Change

I am going through a period of significant change at the moment where I am trying to address some long-standing problems in my life, and I think I am on the right track and making some real progress. My one big dilemma is related to my relationship. I actually credit a lot of my progress to my boyfriend and his unshakable support and the undercurrent of what I think is calmness in our house. BUT, I am finding myself kind of shrinking from him, and if I am being honest, feeling a sort of (shameful) disgust towards him. [more inside]

Undeserved nostalgia?

When was the past better than the present? I'd like to know the word or phrase that describes the romanticism people have of the past, e.g. "In those days, children respected their elders!". I was watching the documentary Born Rich and Cody Franchetti mentions that the encyclopedia was better in the early 20th century. Why? This feeling that "old ways are better" is not exactly nostalgia, because often people expressing this sentiment didn't actually grow up in this utopian past. But their feelings toward this time are exactly like nostalgia. [more inside]
