I help this sweet old lady with computer stuff. She's running Windows 7 and uses an SBC account "powered by Yahoo!" (terribly out-of-date interface). She often receives emails with family photos from her daughter-in-law's iPhone. She CAN download them, and I'm teaching her how to wade through the attachment-folders that seems to create (for virus-scanning I presume) and then copy them over to her Pictures folder, where she can organize them. However, they are often rotated incorrectly because of some iPhone - Windows issue, and they are often checked "Read-Only"...

How can I set up a Windows 7 PC to be clean and stay clean? I don't want file bits and temporary files to clog it up, I don't want a million image files the size of a dot. I don't want this computer to run like molasses after a few years of web browsing and use. What is the best way to do that?

After decided not to go to law school this fall, I find myself somewhat at loose ends, and have decided to look into teaching overseas. Google searches have led me to a confusing plethora of programs, as well as to endless warnings of scams of all types. Is there some sort of centralized database of 'clean' programs, and if so, where might I find it?

I want to create a "crime map" of a city over time. I know the dates of the crimes, and I know the physical address. I'd like for the crime map to be something that I could show a crowd in a presentation such that the audience members could witness for themselves how a particular part of the city changed as time went on. I was thinking of
Gapminder as the ideal, but spatially and dynamic instead of simply numbers. I suppose it'd be possible to get something up and going with GIS, but I was wanting to do it in a way that was idiot-proof as this is only valuable to me if I can do it easily without a ton of time learning some new program.

I just bought my first Mac (Leopard). It seems like Command + tab to switch applications is way less useful than Ctrl + tab was on my Windows--I don't really want to tab between things I've shut but not closed (or however you say it), and repeatedly four-finger swiping to view all open apps makes me have to look for which one I want every time, which is slow. Am I missing something?

My friend is finishing her associate's degree in a creative field in May, but is not sure of whether she should look for a job right away, or accept her admittance to a prestigious and high-profile exchange program at a foreign university. Oh, and she knows about the flipping-a-coin trick so that won't work.

What would be useful about weightwatchers online: the fact of having committed to tracking your weight and being more conscious about what you're eating each day -- being forced to acknowledge the program you've set for yourself, instead of just letting it slip away like most good intentions.
But. The recipes and points etc. are not for me. I want to eat my own things, not their version of "banana bread" or low fat chicken recipes or whatever. I know *how* to lose weight in terms of food choices. I just want a support or tracking system.
Does this exist?
