Tech skills projects for librarianship

I'm a librarian-in-training wanting to improve my tech skills (which are pretty non-existent at the moment) and I figure the best way to do that is to have some projects to work on, but I'm having trouble coming up with any ideas. [more inside]

Where can I find free/high quality software design training videos online.

I have a degree in computer engineering but I would like to expand my programming expertise. I have a very solid understanding of syntax and procedural programming but I am looking for video training on system design techniques and other 'higher-level' concepts like testability. I have recently been going through the Khan Academy math courses and love it. I would like something similar for software design. It can be proper training or just really good podcasts. [more inside]

Can this programmer (me) be successfully sued?

I improved a website for a business. The client was satisfied throughout the project and at launch 1 yr ago. But he fell out with his partners and they're threatening to sue me. I billed about $5k for the site. The site now does everything he wanted - consistent navigation, improved graphics, data driven pages (it had been over 100 html pages with little consistency among them). Can I be sued for violating some best practices like not saving Includes in their own directory, having some HTML tags inside a SQL database, leaving test code and unused files on the production site and not optimizing queries, commenting-out unused code instead of removing it? Can I be sued for leaving the site vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks even if there were no actual damages? [more inside]

Deploying from source control?

What's the best way to deploy a web app from source control? I'm using Eclipse and Subversion, and what I'd really like is the ability to check in a project, then push a button somewhere to have the server pull the latest version, then run deployment code included in the repository in order build the project, copy files, etc, and then restart the web server. Male-dominated workplaces that work for women - the good, the better and the best

Sure, Google and Amazon.com, but who else?

Jobsearchfilter: I'm a year away from a B.S. in biochemistry and computer science. As a recent graduate, my primary objective and my most valuable skill would be to learn new things. Please help me brainstorm software companies that will hire smart, ignorant people and train them in-house (i.e., the companies whose recruiters ask about graph traversals, not dependency injection in PicoContainer). Help me understand interacting with a RESTful API, please

I'm tired of using other people's modules for interacting with websites' APIs. But I can't seem to quite wrap my head around using JSON with a website/cgi script I haven't designed. Are there any good tutorials that talk over how to build a JSON file to send to a RESTful API and then do what you want, preferably generalized so I'm not searching for a new one for each website? Propriety software as quality of life issue

I'm being interviewed for a job as a VB.NET programmer. I have a good chance of getting it, despite all my past experience being with Java/Perl/Python/C. I'm somewhat of an Open Source ideologue, and hate the idea of using Microsoft technologies, which strike me as not only technically inferior and frustrating to work with, but on the wrong side of history. I'm looking for other options, but assuming they don't come through before I'm given an offer will I regret taking it? Doesn't Microsoft itself consider VB deprecated? To what extent are the other .NET languages (C#) better? [more inside]
