I generally work from home and have an excellent desktop machine that never lets me down. Occasionally I have to travel, and when I do I take an ancient Dell Inspiron 8500 to work on and use for remote support. Long story short, the Dell has died and I'm out of touch with laptop options. Anyone know the best portable machines for programmers? [more inside]

Hello MeFi. I'm curious as to the correlation between software development Design Patterns for and Jazz Standards. Usual loot from Google: Some dude who thought of it first (and used it as a nice allegoric explanation in Programmers Stackexchange and a somewhat geeky ironic coding-related mention ("Jazz supports interaction through event listeners"). These are all nice examples of the basic similarity between the two, I'm looking for more, though. Are you aware of any materials that somehow approach this idea?

Practical tips around positive support of youth, program structures that work, behavior management, and incentives
My wife is the director of an after school program that serves low income minority youth in grades 3 through 12. She is looking for practical tips to share with direct service staff around positive support of youth, program structures that work, behavior management, and incentives. What resources might you recommend (web or print)? What suggestions do you have as to what's successful or ways to assist in training and supporting staff within programming. Thanks.

How do I take data from a spreadsheet (LibreOffice Impress, to be precise), and use it as input to a program in Java?
How do I take data from a spreadsheet (LibreOffice Impress, to be precise), and use it as input to a program in Java? This is fairly basic stuff, so I'm a little embarrassed to be having issues with this, but I don't have much time. I'm well aware of how to do file I/O with a text file using a Scanner object for input, but how does this work with a spreadsheet?
I'd like to make a programming project I did for a university course available as open source. I finished the course, but not my degree yet. The code could be helpful to people outside of just an assignment problem, and it's actually a well known project from a book, with answers in other languages already available online. My question is, are there any academic integrity issues with doing this, also considering I am still working on my degree?

A while back, there as a controversial (flamebait) blog post by a CS professor about what predicts success in programming. He had a "one-question" test that he claimed was strongly predictive. 1) The actual question was a "whats the value of variable x" after a few steps of manipulation sort of thing. 2) He interpreted it as meaning "people who get this right actually accept that the computer does exactly what you tell it to, not what you wish it to do" Help me find this post.

“Any code of your own that you haven't looked at for six or more months might as well have been written by someone else.”This maxim, generally cited as “Eagleson's Law [of Programming]” (and often extended “Eagleson is an optimist; the real number is more like 3 weeks”) has been floating around the internet for ages*. I'm looking for software companies that do 1) aptitude-based hiring and 2) on-the-job training: "If you pass a (often language-agnostic) programming test, in addition to in-person interviews, maybe a code review, etc., we will train you for your job." What companies in the Chicago area follow this model? [more inside]
