Who is Eagleson and where did Eagleson's law originate?

Programmers soon learn that
“Any code of your own that you haven't looked at for six or more months might as well have been written by someone else.”
This maxim, generally cited as “Eagleson's Law [of Programming]” (and often extended “Eagleson is an optimist; the real number is more like 3 weeks”) has been floating around the internet for ages*. But who is Eagleson, and where did this notion originally appear? [more inside]

Aptitude-based hiring and on-the-job hiring in software companies?

I'm looking for software companies that do 1) aptitude-based hiring and 2) on-the-job training: "If you pass a (often language-agnostic) programming test, in addition to in-person interviews, maybe a code review, etc., we will train you for your job." What companies in the Chicago area follow this model? [more inside]

Learning C-like languages in London, fast

I work with databases and T-SQL. I'd like to be taught to program fun software-type stuff quickly and painlessly, in London. Maybe some Objective-C, I'm not sure. I think I'd prefer a one-week intensive course or two to evening classes, but I'm open to the latter if they're really good. [more inside]

Where can I find free/high quality software design training videos online.

I have a degree in computer engineering but I would like to expand my programming expertise. I have a very solid understanding of syntax and procedural programming but I am looking for video training on system design techniques and other 'higher-level' concepts like testability. I have recently been going through the Khan Academy math courses and love it. I would like something similar for software design. It can be proper training or just really good podcasts. [more inside]

Can this programmer (me) be successfully sued?

I improved a website for a business. The client was satisfied throughout the project and at launch 1 yr ago. But he fell out with his partners and they're threatening to sue me. I billed about $5k for the site. The site now does everything he wanted - consistent navigation, improved graphics, data driven pages (it had been over 100 html pages with little consistency among them). Can I be sued for violating some best practices like not saving Includes in their own directory, having some HTML tags inside a SQL database, leaving test code and unused files on the production site and not optimizing queries, commenting-out unused code instead of removing it? Can I be sued for leaving the site vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks even if there were no actual damages? [more inside]
