Short-term housing in San Francisco

I'm considering attending a six-month web development bootcamp in San Francisco that runs from October to April, and I'm wondering what I can expect to pay for housing. I'm interested in learning both about cheaper arrangements like SROs in Chinatown and housing oriented towards students, as well as about what it might cost to get a room in a "normal" multi-bedroom apartment for that period. How to transition into software without a CS degree

Career advice filter: I'm currently an experienced research assistant at a major research university (three years out of undergrad) who developed serious programming skills working on NLP projects doing parsing and information retrieval. My undergraduate degree is in Linguistics. I'm attempting a career transition into a more purely technical, software-oriented, possibly NLP-flavored position. Do you have any practical advice for ways that I can showcase my programming abilities and/or convince prospective employers that I am solid candidate (despite the lack of CS degree)? [more inside]

Custom Software to Vendor Solution, job security?

I work for a large public sector institution. We have about 30 developers. Our code base is about 2 million lines of code. It's been custom developed over about 12 years. New CIO wants to gradually replace it all with vendor solutions, 3rd party apps. Reasoning being is that they want their apps to do more and more and feel 3rd party (SAP/PeopleSoft/etc) can do it faster. They state that they won't need to let anyone go, since the new system to replace this one will be doing so much more there will be a need for programmers to do an maintain integration code. I'm a developer, what is the end scenario here? More developers? Less? All outsourced? Are there case studies of similar transitions?

The Travelling Programmer

I'd like to travel the world for a few years and work on some iOS app ideas at the same time, with the hope that if one of 'em makes enough money I can keep doing it forever! However, I reckon hostels probably aren't the most productive places in the world. Have any of you ever done something like this? What's the best approach for getting in the zone and being productive when you're on the go and surrounded by people? Are coffeehouse programmers as common in Europe as they are in the Silicon Valley? What about work-life balance -- is it possible to maintain a healthy hostel social life while also getting stuff done? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

violent video games developer -> bible software developer?

My partner and I are currently living on separate sides of the Vancouver/Washington state border - I would very much like to move to be with her, but the job prospects for my specialties are low. One option is to work for a local company which produces bible software. From a technical standpoint, their products are excellent, the jobs pay well , have excellent medical and retirement benefits and they regularly hire from outside the faith. The catch? I am a staunch atheist, and bordering on actively anti-religious. [more inside]

Can this programmer (me) be successfully sued?

I improved a website for a business. The client was satisfied throughout the project and at launch 1 yr ago. But he fell out with his partners and they're threatening to sue me. I billed about $5k for the site. The site now does everything he wanted - consistent navigation, improved graphics, data driven pages (it had been over 100 html pages with little consistency among them). Can I be sued for violating some best practices like not saving Includes in their own directory, having some HTML tags inside a SQL database, leaving test code and unused files on the production site and not optimizing queries, commenting-out unused code instead of removing it? Can I be sued for leaving the site vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks even if there were no actual damages? [more inside]

Propriety software as quality of life issue

I'm being interviewed for a job as a VB.NET programmer. I have a good chance of getting it, despite all my past experience being with Java/Perl/Python/C. I'm somewhat of an Open Source ideologue, and hate the idea of using Microsoft technologies, which strike me as not only technically inferior and frustrating to work with, but on the wrong side of history. I'm looking for other options, but assuming they don't come through before I'm given an offer will I regret taking it? Doesn't Microsoft itself consider VB deprecated? To what extent are the other .NET languages (C#) better? [more inside]
