ruby/python database tutorial?

I'm searching for a simple ruby/python database application tutorial. A long time ago, like six years ago, I came across this simple tutorial for php/mysql that showed you, from the ground up, how to put a simple database of your video collection online. Is there a similar tutorial that emphasizes creating a simple front-end for a mysql database using ruby or python, geared toward n00bs? [more inside]

Compulsory PHP instruction

I've received a $1000 grant that I can use to learn PHP, in order to eventually write an education-specific application. I could attend a programming boot camp this Summer, take an online course, or blow it all on books and software. Of course, I have a bunch of php/mysql books already. Has anyone gone to one of those programming boot camps, and was it worth it?

Rent-a-Geek

rent-a-geek: Is there a site/service out there where I can hire someone to do some micro-jobs for me related to running a server? Something like Google Answers but instead of paying someone $10 to find out the history of hemophilia in New Zealand, I would pay someone $10 to fix my WebDav installation, or get mysql working, or some task that would take a Smart Person about 10 minutes of poking around. It's not that I can't figure this stuff out eventually but I am short on time. Such a site would have to have some sort of reputation management, I suppose.

(Geesh, I sound like I'm writing a business plan)
