Need a writing program/application

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, but I can't find anything within the last few years. I'm looking for a writing program that looks clean but has some basic editing features. TextEdit is too basic but Word is too fussy. Any new, good programs these days? Must be available for Mac. Fancier features are OK as long as it doesn't start looking or feeling like Word. Cost isn't so important.

Can I auto-hide the taskbar in just one application?

I have Windows 8.1. There's one program I use that enforces a window height that is the exact height of my screen. If the taskbar is visible, the bottom part of the window is obscured behind it. If I auto-hide the taskbar, the window fits perfectly. Problem is, I like keeping the taskbar visible. Is there any way to hide it only when this program is running? [more inside]

MFT application: letter of reference & personal statement samples? Help!

Hi Mefi Community, I would like to apply for an MFT grad program but feel a huge block when it comes to the personal statement, as well as the letter of reference(s). One of my recommenders has asked that I draft the letter of reference and he will approve it after review, but I've never actually even seen one of these before, so do not know where to begin! Cut... cut... cut... cut... cut...

I made a long video, and I need to break it into ten-minute-long chunks, so that I can post it to YouTube. I would LOVE some app that let's me batch process this task. I want to start it running in the morning and come home at night to find a whole bunch of ten-minute-long videos on my desktop. I'm using an Intel Mac. I'm willing to buy an app if I have to.
