Cinematography: What changed on Doctor Who between Davies and Moffat?

This week I watched a Doctor Who episode from the Russell T. Davies era with David Tennant as Doctor 10. I cut my teeth on the Matt Smith episodes, so I always find the older episodes so different in terms of production quality. But what am I seeing, exactly? What were the technical changes in production between the two series? [more inside]

How to 'blast' music on speakers for mixing, living with parents

Hey music people I'm wondering if you maybe have figured out a solution to this issue I'm having. Basically I need to master/play electronic music on my studio monitor speakers, usually at a VERY LOUD level so I can hear if all the frequencies are where they should be. I'm living with the folks and they got super pissed when I was doing that in my closet. So I moved outside with the speakers facing away and they were still pissed. Keep in mind this is all in the middle of the day. [more inside]

Looking for event, rigging, stagebuilding work.

So this November I worked on some freelance event gigs throughout NYC-- it was similar to the film production work I'm looking to get into, required some related skills and I worked alongside some people with experience in the film industry. I've been looking high and low for similar work-- stage building, rigging, that sort of thing. Following that seasonal gig, I tried to look on Craigslist, Indeed, even Mandy for related event work but was lost-- despite the fact that I'd worked with people who seemed to imply that they'd found event work through similar avenues. Whither the beard wrangler?

TV shows and movies frequently feature characters with five o'clock shadows or a day or so worth of beard growth. Given that production schedules often require long shooting days, how do they keep a five o'clock shadow from looking like 8 am the next morning? How are actor's beards kept at the couple of days growth look when a sixteen hour shooting day could easily have them well on their way to looking like one of the Boston Red Sox? [more inside]

Sonic Masterpiece Albums

With Fall around the corner I am looking for some new music to drive to and take long walks with. I listen to a lot of music but find myself returning to many of the same records. Most are sonically complex and feature lots of layers. I like the fact that I feel like I hear something new after the 1000th listen of the Fragile. What albums sound as good to you after the 100th listen as they did when it was new? [more inside]

How do I get my foot in the door at a small production company in NY?

I have two dream jobs: one is working as a producer at a small independent production company in NY, the other is being a casting director. I don't want to be some big hollywood producer, but I'd love to work at a smaller media company. Whenever I've managed to get a foot in the door somewhere, I've done well. There are two problems. One is I have no idea how to land an entry level position in such a company. The other is that I'm starting out late at the age of 29. [more inside]

Simple Database for Video Production

I'm looking for a simple, cloud based database to keep track of production contacts (Cast and Crew) and location information for a medium sized production company. Do you know of a good service/tool for this use? [more inside]

Food Manufacturing Advice--lowcarb variety

So--IRL I am a busy psychologist with a busy practice and not a lot of time. In internet circles--of the lowcarb eating community variety, I have a lovely rep as the creator of a really nice low carb flour substitute for baking. Although I have made my recipe available online (requires some specialty ingredients), folks are enthusiastic enough about this concoction that they are encouraging me to go into production and to sell it. I haven't a clue what that would involve, and would likely be more interested in remaining the creative end who partners with someone who can execute the production stuff. What are the things I should be thinking about here? My questions are: [more inside]

How do I move the moving pictures from the camera to the computer?

I am in the application process for a really awesome job, and I just found out I have my second phone interview on Monday afternoon. Yay! It's a producing job at a start up web content company, and based on the first call, they're going to want to hire someone who can move data from cameras (sounds like I would be mostly working with DSLRs) into Final Cut Pro and prepare it for editing. I currently work in TV, where this job belongs to the assistant editors, and I don't even know how to begin to figure out this process. Please give me some weekend reading material to help me figure out if this is something I could quickly learn how to do. Thank you! [more inside]

Is this normal in publishing?

I've just started a job as a production editor at a magazine and am wondering if our company is behind the times. Whenever I want to make any sort of change to a document, even something like adding a period to the end of a sentence, I have to ask someone in the layout department do it. I have no way of making any changes myself. Is this how all publishers work? Seems rather old-fashioned to me.
