I would prefer not to? Wow, not a huge Melville crowd, I guess

A person actively avoids doing what he knows will make him happy. He just doesn't want to do it. Psychologically, what's going on here? And more importantly, perhaps, why should he do what he doesn't want to do? What arguments, appealing to either his reason or his emotions, might he consider? [more inside]

How to motivate or force an ADD student to self-study?

I'm a college student with pretty serious ADD who's doing an Independent Study contract in a sink-or-swim situation on a topic I love and am motivated to research. However, I can't actually bring myself to start to do it seriously, and have wasted nearly half the quarter. Stress is mounting, time is nigh, my ability to follow my own schedules near-zero so far. Quarter Life Crisis, Redux

When I'm not in school, I feel like my life has totally dead-ended. I'm starting to think that stress and anxiety are the only things that motivate me. Too old for this.

This is my second semester back after a 4 year “break”. I’ll be 30 very soon and really want to earn my degree. I really enjoy the classes and the discussions on the readings. When it comes to writing the papers I completely shut down. I always underestimate the difficulty of a task and the amount of time it will take to complete. It’s not that I forget. I do a lot of thinking about the paper and the topics – in my head. I have never in my entire life, completed anything before it was due. I have never written a draft. Now that the assignments are for more than 5 pages I am really struggling. I’m drinking way more caffeine, smoking more, sleeping less, completely discombobulated. My grades have been good – when I hand in the work. [more inside]

Am I a crazy person from crazytown?

My Get It Done is different than everyone else's Get It Done: If I tell somebody I am going to do things (file my papers, go to the store, clean up kitchen..etc) it will not get done. if I write it down , it does not get done. But I keep my mouth shut and just keep the plan in my head, it gets done. What is going on here? Do other people do this? Is there a name for it? [more inside]
