How do I become more responsible?

I am a talented, social, religious, active, healthy, and disciplined adult. However, one of my great strengths is that I am quite adaptable - I "roll with the punches" very well, you could say. The problem with this is that I sometimes take a more irresponsible path (procrastination, running late, omitting important tasks) because I've learned through experience that the energy expended in adapting to consequences is often less than the energy expended in being completely responsible from the beginning. I want to become more responsible, because I feel like my irresponsibility is keeping me from reaching an even higher level of productivity and happiness. How can I reach level 70 arch-mage zen responsibility?

How can I get a balance of interesting and important things done?

My job has a lot of responsibilities and some of them are more interesting and appealing than others. Sometimes I find myself blocked on some of the ones I like less, especially when they have stressful consequences. For example, I often need to write detailed reports for higher-ups (stressful and not enjoyable!), but I'd rather be designing new CSS stylesheets. Sometimes I just stress out about writing for a whole day and don't get anything done. I've thought of doing something more enjoyable and lower priority but I'm worried that when I'm done with that, the high-priority tasks will still be there, and they won't be any easier, appealing, or less stressful. Has anyone had any success breaking up their work like this? Have any strategies for success? How do I know how much time I can afford to spend on the low-priority stuff? How can I avoid just procrastinating on the important stuff while doing the things that make me love my job?

Too old for this.

This is my second semester back after a 4 year “break”. I’ll be 30 very soon and really want to earn my degree. I really enjoy the classes and the discussions on the readings. When it comes to writing the papers I completely shut down. I always underestimate the difficulty of a task and the amount of time it will take to complete. It’s not that I forget. I do a lot of thinking about the paper and the topics – in my head. I have never in my entire life, completed anything before it was due. I have never written a draft. Now that the assignments are for more than 5 pages I am really struggling. I’m drinking way more caffeine, smoking more, sleeping less, completely discombobulated. My grades have been good – when I hand in the work. [more inside]

Am I a crazy person from crazytown?

My Get It Done is different than everyone else's Get It Done: If I tell somebody I am going to do things (file my papers, go to the store, clean up kitchen..etc) it will not get done. if I write it down , it does not get done. But I keep my mouth shut and just keep the plan in my head, it gets done. What is going on here? Do other people do this? Is there a name for it? [more inside]
