I really like interviews about how people do their work, the tools they use and why. I regularly read The Setup
and Lifehacker's "How I Work"
series. What other sites should I be reading?

Conventional wisdom teaches us not to re-heat food. (Many do anyway, but that's another story). Many prepared meals are cooked (i.e. heated up) and then chilled and put into packets ready to be reheated (by oven or microwave). These ready meals often also say "do not reheat" on them. Some of them go into more detail with a curiosity-inducing sentence: "This ready meal has been cooled using a specialised process and should not be re-heated after home heating". My question is... what is this specialised process - why is it OK for them to cook and cool food ready to be re-heated, but not me! Is it just a sterile environment, or something more fascinating?

Decided to step up security with Google's 2-step verification process. Received the codes sent to my phone so that I could use the Gmail app and use my Google account on my phone's browser. Also, decided to list my work laptop as a trusted computer.
Later I try logging in with my personal laptop without any luck.
So now I'm not sure what to do. I can't log into any of my accounts whether its from my phone or my home laptop. Do I have to wait until I head back to work and use the laptop there? I admit I didn't carefully read all the directions for the setup...

I've always wondered how cartoonist create their strips. But I've started to notice that many of them choose simple body shapes and repeat expressions or only use a few settings or locations. Where can I read a straightforward explanation about the how and why of the creative process for making cartoons?

Hi Mefi Community,
I would like to apply for an MFT grad program but feel a huge block when it comes to the personal statement, as well as the letter of reference(s). One of my recommenders has asked that I draft the letter of reference and he will approve it after review, but I've never actually even seen one of these before, so do not know where to begin! I couldn't find any information as to how Alan Moore goes about writing his comics (namely Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell). I found an excerpt from his Watchmen script
which shows how incredibly detailed he is in describing each panel. I once read that on Watchmen, it was a back-and-forth between him and Dave Gibbons, where Gibbons starts off with roughly sketching out the panels, gets comments from Moore, gets greenlit, then proceeds to drawing the final version. Any more information on Moore's process? Any other scripts you know of and is his writing as detailed for all his projects as detailed (I know that From Hell has labyrinthine appendices that almost match the work itself in length for example)?

After years of being on the fence about leaving and gritting my teeth while putting up with a shitty work environment, I'm ready to start applying for jobs. It's taken me a long time to get brave enough to do this, so I'm pretty happy that I'm going to pull the plug! But I feel like I can't start applying for positions because of an upcoming vacation, and I'm not sure what to do. [more inside]

So I'm checking my process explorer and I'll be - but I've got NINE host processes running. Why? Are they all necessary? Is this suspicious? All I have is a pen tablet, browser, AV and ISP going. How do I delve further to investigate?
The only reason I'm looking into it is because out of the blue my ISP is majorly lagging and this is just in the last 2 days. SOMETHING is on my tail and I want it off.
Thanks for any heads up.

Usually designers and (to a greater degree, artists) are represented by agents who take care of all the administrative/legislative issues. However, for those who manage their own freelance businesses, it is imperative that they have their own business documents (project questionnaires, proposals, quotations, contracts, invoices, ..). I am interested in mapping out all the needed documents in the process of a project, from the moment the client contacts the designer/artist to the moment the project is submitted and the payments are made. Where can I find some comprehensive/reliable resources for such documents?

How does a paranoid psychotic episode end? Assuming that someone is on medication that starts working, does it tend to be a sudden thing where they wake up one day and they no longer believe in any of the huge conspiracy their mind had created? Or do they gradually stop believing the least plausible delusions one by one? Or do they stop feeling the terror associated with it first, and maybe even continue to believe that all that stuff DID happen to them, but that it isn't an ongoing threat any more? Or do they maybe just become more open to logical arguments against their beliefs? [more inside]

Why might a process not use all available physical memory under Windows Server 2008 r2 standard? I have 32Gb of RAM acknowledged by Resource Monitor, of which 19.4 are allocated to a process (the IBM solver CPLEX running in command line form from Power Shell) that has just thrown a controlled OOM error despite there being another 12 Gb marked as available.
I'm going to assume (to start with) that the program itself isn't the culprit, but is there a per-user limit switch, a per-process limit switch or something similar in 2008 r2? Any other ideas?

Is your company as dysfunctional as mine? From the outside looking in, everything seems great. From a customers point of view our product is quite polished. But....if you sit where I am, everything is a mess. Procedures that make no sense. Technology infrastructure that looks like spaghetti. Horrible data. Broken lines of communication. Inability to book a simple meeting room. People bitching about leaving stuff in the refrigerator. Meetings that go nowhere. I have seen this at other companies. Is this par for the course or do I need to get a new job? If this isn't the case in your company, what things ( process / procedure / software / behaviours/ etc. ) have made the biggest positive impact? If your company is as messy as mine, what things make you say WTF? Learn me about what happens in your corporate black box.....for better or worse.

I am curious about karaoke musicians. What I mean by that is that I have noticed that a lot of karaoke music are re-creations of the original recordings. I am interested in the business, process, and culture of the musicians who re-create that music. We often get articles from reporters "embedded" in the entourage of a popular touring band - I was hoping that someone might recommend a feature article or book about the lives of these *ahem* unsung musicians. Thanks!
