The website toysrus.ca won't load any images on my computer, it's the only site I could find that does this. Even stranger, if I access the site through a proxy, the site loads fine. I also asked friends online to check for me, and the site loads fine for them too. What is going on?

Succour for Aged Computers Filter: I've got an old computer that is having two problems. 1) When it boots up, it always asks to go into safemode. This is an old problem. 2) when it boots up, I can use the kb to select safemode (or not) or make selections in the bios, but when XP loads up, mouse and kb aren't working! [more inside]

I live on a street where the houses are not on the same ground level and so there are retaining walls between the properties. The house on my uphill side was built in the 1920’s and my house was built on a vacant lot between two houses from that era in 1961. Thanks to a brochure of the development in the 20’s, I have a picture of these two neighboring houses when my lot was vacant. The picture clearly shows the walls, or in actuality, the walls that are visible above ground level. These walls were built on top of the real retaining walls and were wood frame inside with chicken wire and plaster over the outside. [more inside]

A month or so ago, I became unable to add new tracks to Itunes. Whether I try to add via clicking on the track, dragging into iTunes, or adding the track from the file menu, the result is the same. I have also tried changing my preferences so that the track does not copy to the iTunes library when it is added; still the same. When I try to add a track, my hard drive just spins and makes a little clicking noise and iTunes goes into "not responding" mode, with the spinning pinwheel. [more inside]

Imagine a cube-shaped building, with ten cube-shaped rooms along each side (10 rooms long, 10 high & 10 deep). Each cubular room has 4 walls, 1 ceiling and 1 floor. Each of the 6 interior surfaces in all 1000 cubular rooms is decorated with a different piece of art. The rooms can be moved around the building, as if it were an enormous Rubik's cube, but they can also be spun on their axes, so all 6 walls of all 1000 cubes is capable of touching all the others (if the cube is so arranged). How many combinations of art within the 'Cube Gallery' are possible? If you can run me through the workings of the maths I would be extra grateful. Also, what technical words/phrases/language are useful/interesting in expressing this concept? [more inside]

The problem: I'm subscribed to 20-30 high volume mailing lists (e.g., Ubuntu, Python) and the gmail account I'm using is now 80% full! I subscribed to them to ask a question once in a while, but I really have no interest in following every post to the lists. My question is how do others handle this situation? Is there a solution to mailing lists that I'm missing? [more inside]

Anyone on MetaFilter any good at writing Windows Scripting Language (VBScript) scripts? I am a total nonprogrammer but need a simple task done, which is copying a file from one directory to another (on a Win XP) system either (a) every twenty minutes, or better still (b) after checking to see if the archive bit on the file has been reset, indicating that it has been changed since the last filecopy. This should run as a background script without any user intervention or evidence that it is happening, if possible. [more inside]
I run a computer service. I have an issue that is a bit outside the bounds. I have a client who has been using an Excel spreadsheet to track his portfolio. It is pre-formatted for him to enter data and the formulas are all there. Just recently, it started calculating some things incorrectly. The person who originally set it up just passed away earlier this year. We need an Excel expert that can look at the file and don't know where to begin to find one. Checked the local community college but no dice. All ideas or pointers are appreciated.
My iBook G4 has lately been winking out, for no apparent reason, as I'm in the middle of something (I have to reset the date each time, among other things). The weird thing is that it only seems to happen when I'm on battery power. When I press the little button on the bottom, it seems to indicate full power. However, I was noticing a month or so ago I was getting weird battery warnings -- saying it was almost out of power, when it said there was 41% power remaining, etc. Has anyone had this problem, and might a new battery somehow be the solution?
My Windows Explorer in Win 2000 will open a web site but when it is loaded, the site immediately refreshes. This repeats again and again in every page and makes it impossible to use the web. Why doesn't my computer recognize a program I want to install by DVD. I use XP. It happens to be a bible program and my DVD does recognize other DVD's but when I put in the installation DVD for this program, nothing shows up under the "D" drive where the DVD is located. If I go to "Start," "Open" I get a message "Please insert a disc in drive D." I've rebooted a number of times and this does not help. I've called the (bible program) help desk and they sent me a complete new program (free) and low and behold, it does not recognize the DVD? Any ideas' to try? Do you think I have a defective DVD?

Problem with DVD/VCR recorder/player - all of a sudden, the VCR part won't record, it says "Check record safety tab" and ejects every tape I try, including the tape I had recorded on the previous night. The first tape I tried was a brand new tape, same thing. At first I thought the new tape was defective, but the problem happens on all the new tapes I just bought, and one's I've used for recording recently. Could the new tape have screwed it up somehow?
