Give me advice on probiotics

I'm taking Augmentin (an antibiotic) for a sinus infection. My doctor said I should also take Florastor, a probiotic, to avoid stomach issues. But won't the Augmentin kill anything that Florastor manages to grow? I know, YANMD, but if you have any experience taking antibiotics and probiotics at the same time, please tell me how that worked for you. Did it help with antibiotic-related tummy trouble?

Is Yakult worth it?

What have been your experiences of taking Yakult? Is drinking this stuff really worth it? I don't travel abroad, don't eat stuff past the sell by date and have pretty regular bowel movements. I've been drinking it for about 6 months now, and have noticed no difference whatsoever.

How did drinking Yakult (or any such drink, I guess) actually affect your life? I'm looking for general answers about how this stuff affected you, in a positive/negative way.

Digestive flora for fauna with poor digestion

Best probiotic supplement for an allergic cat? OR: Probiotic/digestive supplements with short ingredient lists. Backstory: At the vet's today, we decided it's time to begin treating our cat Torgo's IBD/IBS/general digestive issues more aggressively. As well as a short course of Flagyl and regular Prednisone, the vet recommended probiotic supplements with the prescription food he's been on for over a year now (Hill's z/d).

He did say that it may be difficult to find a probiotic, because of Torgo's food sensitivities. We haven't done extensive tests to determine what he's most sensitive to, because I don't want to put him through the discomfort of a reaction.

Does anyone know of any good probiotics that have limited other ingredients? The fewer ingredients there are, I'm hoping the less chance he will have a reaction, and the more I know of with limited ingrdinets, the more we can try.

Probiotic tablets -- how can bacteria be dried?

Probiotic vitamin tablets: How can bacteria be made into a tablet? Aren't they alive? How can they be dried? My vitamin tablets have a layer in them that's probiotic bacteria for my gut. The packaging says this is a wonderful thing because they don't need to be stored at a certain temperature, and they've got a shelf life until 2010. But aren't bacteria living organisms? How can they be dried?

Would-be intestinal bacteria snob seeks counsel

So, thanks to the doctor, I'm on some weapons-grade antibiotics, and it looks like all the friendly symbiotic bacteria in my tract are going to be/may already have been destroyed. I guess this is sort of an opportunity, so I'm wondering, anyone have any recommendations for what to repopulate my intestines with? I know there are yogurts that advertise what gut flora and fauna they provide, and some probiotic milks, too. I've seen something called acidophilus advertised.

I read about one yogurt that has some kind of awesome Romanian strain of bacteria a few years back, but now I can't remember what it was!

I guess it's probably futile and I'll just end up with the bacteria from my first post-antibiotic meal dominating my guts, but I'm kind of a nerd, and I feel like I should try to take charge of what I repopulate my digestive tract with, since I have the opportunity. Any and all interesting ideas are welcome!
