A high school student of mine (along with their parent) wants me to give him a letter of recommendation that I wrote about him for an internship program. I feel a little uncomfortable about that. I know it's within my rights, but is it unreasonable or extraordinary of me to refuse? [more inside]
I've had several careers (or jobs) that seem very different from each other, and I have an educational background which is equally varied. I'm looking to possibly embark on a new path, but need help figuring out where I'm going exactly. [more inside]
I've been asked to help a family find the right school for their child - he's 7, not a fan of the whole 'structured work' thing*, and gets in trouble a lot at his current school. They're also (quite rightly) worried that he'll get quite "cool" in a few years if he ends up in the wrong place. He likes art and adores football. A boarding school would be pretty much ideal, as far I can tell, but doesn't seem to be an option. [more inside]

Hi MetaFilter, Putting it out for the group to help me weigh the pro's and con's of a career move. I am 44 years old, marketing professional with 10 years experience in health care marketing communication. I recently got my MBA last year and got recruited to go to another large Chicago health care system. The new job pays more and is OK but we are going through a reorg and merger and my position will change going forward. My current boss is leaving the organization and said that he is putting me forward for a better position with more responsibility going into the reorg but it is hard to trust that this will happen since that is all going to be in flux. About a month ago I applied for a federal marketing communication project manager position with the General Services Administration at the Federal Acquisition Service and this past Friday I was offered the job as a GS-13 Step One and they want my answer on Monday. I'm looking for readings, stories of peoples' lives, anecdotes, your thoughts, or any other sort of material about the value of a "small" life of private integrity over a "larger" life of public recognition and acclaim. I'd love especially to read about people's lives, so pointers to biographical reading material would be appreciated.
I worked out a private sale of a beginner's violin with a new friend met at a conference (complicated story; detail within). She didn't have enough money to pay me then, and because I had a good feeling about her I let her fly home first and worked out a plan to pay me later. It has been two months, I have not seen a cent, and she's ignoring my messages. What can I do? [more inside]

I'm an ASW in San Francisco, planning to have my LCSW by next year. I have many years of mental health experience and my ultimate goal is having my own psychotherapy practice. My mentors who are either LCSW's or MFT's are pretty negative about the state of private practice. Are there any clinicians in the Bay Area or elsewhere with success stories? Any words of advice on where to start? This is unfortunately not something they teach us in grad school. Thanks in advance!

Where do you find great hip-hop dance classes in NYC? I have never taken a dance class before. I am interested in private instruction or intimate classes (NOT a gym class...). I would like to learn as quickly as possible, in a structured way. I don't expect to go from 0-60 overnight, but I will put in some serious work. I tend to prefer methodical approaches to learning new skills with clear goals. I'm most interested in hearing about personal experiences and recommendations.
I have a private offer to buy a domain that I registered with Network Solutions. It's not worth much, and I'm selling for less than $200. After some email communication, I'm happy to just trust the buyer to deposit funds in my Paypal account. Question: How do I actually do this in 2013? Do I have to use a domain escrow service and then eat the commission fee? I seriously cannot figure out how to do a direct person-to-person transfer/sale without using escrow. Every search for "transfer domain" points to transferring back to Network Solutions. Every search for "sell domain" points to escrow services. I'm stumped and turn to you. Please explain it to me like I'm in elementary school. Thanks.
I hate responding to small-talk interrogations. I'm a private person, and I just don't feel ok with giving relative strangers answers to personal-feeling questions, even though the questions themselves may be fairly innocuous. I also get confused and flustered when people ask me a lot of questions, and I will make mistakes, even though they are about me. How can I avoid answering these kinds of questions? [more inside]

A google search of my name revealed an Amazon "Hope to Read" list that I didn't know existed. This is a public record of the books I've bought and, for kindle books, how much I've read of each. I've tried looking through Amazon's settings and googling this question--how do I make my books private? [more inside]
Hello Everyone, So my car is currently impounded at a private tow lot in New York City as it has been for the past 5 weeks. I only received notification from the police department by mail in the past few days. When I called up to the tow lot this morning and spoke with the general manager, he informed me that my car has already racked up almost $1400 (!) in storage fees at $27/day. (The police document said only $17/day). He also said that he had sent a package to me on 1/26, but I still haven't received it yet. [more inside]
Someone made a comment on the blue recently about "this is what happens when private companies are put in charge of" some sort of social service and it got me thinking. I'm interested in any recent books or articles that give a good account of what goes right or wrong when private enterprise provides social services that charities and government-funded programs currently provide. Looking for a website that lets me do this: For a set group of people, each submits a message. You can see who's sent a message, but not what the contents of the message are. When everyone's submitted a message, all the messages are revealed. This is for an online Magic: the Gathering tournament - we're having everyone submit an entry before anyone sees what anyone else submitted.

YouTube sleuthing question: When you're logged in, the home page shows a timeline of activity from all the accounts you've subscribed to. Cliche alert: I'm thinking of starting a blog. However, since I don't have a specific theme yet (um, haven't picked something to do for one year that will result in a book contract:)..just kidding), I would prefer to have it only viewed by close friends at first. Is there a way to do this? I'm looking at blogger.com right now to start. I am not very tech, but I have a lot to say!:) so am looking for an outlet (secure at first, to prevent major embarassments if it doesn't work out) with which to do that. Any advice? (Basically I am planning on making a lot of changes this year, wish to document them, and any other random life observations/stories and have all of that readable/viewable by close friends at first and maybe expand from there.) Is this possible?
