Can some of you amazing Internet security people explain to me how cautious I need to be about what I do online? Is there a way to explore ideas online that are ideas you'd normally keep private? Or -- do I perhaps not need to worry about this, given the way opposition research and government confirmations actually work? [more inside]

I have a friend who browses the internet at work. She thinks she has our company's internet monitoring program beat by surfing through Lotus Notes. Recently I've discovered she's been logging into livejournal from work, and I'm concerned because my security is friends-only (and she is on my friends list). Is she right about surfing with Lotus Notes, or am I screwed as far as the company now having access to my livejournal?

Oh, Christ. I just clicked on someone's profile on Facebook. I really don't want them to know I found them there. If it's an open profile, meaning a relative stranger could find it and open it with no restrictions, will this person get any kind of notification that I viewed it?

As part of my work for a client I've begun researching online privacy, cryptography, and other sundry ways of protecting oneself online. And I'm now completely creeped out and must switch NOW to uncrackable passwords, multiple email accounts, encrypting the crap out of everything I do, and generally making sure that only the things I want public on the internet are publicly accessible. But we run into the question - how do I do that without driving myself nuts trying to remember my passwords, convince everyone I know to use encrypted communication, and maintain a reasonable amount of privacy in my web surfing? And how do I do that after 8 years of webwhorage where I wasn't too concerned who knew what about me? [more inside]

So I'm starting a business and someone has registered the domain name that would go perfectly with it, and then done nothing. It still has the register.com "Clevername.com is coming soon to Register.com" page at the domain even though it has been registered for several months now. Now here's the tricky part: They use register.com's private domain feature which means that all the whois information goes to domain discreet, a company which shortstops all your whois information for clients. Let's say you've had an experience and written about it. And let's say it's something others on the internet might want to know about. And let's say you have it saved as a simple html doc and would like to get it out there, accessible via Google, etc. And let's say you'd like perfect anonymity. What can you do to get it out there and indexed but not traceable? Free? Anonymous? Publish and forget?
Obviously, this is about battling spammers at some point. Advice?

Networkimpairedfilter; Inspired by this thread http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/8071 , I would like to make some portion of my bandwidth available to others. My question is not how do I make the internet access available, but how do I prevent someone from getting to my files? My access point is connected to a switch and then to my modem, which is behind a NAT (not sure exactly what that means, but I thought I would throw it in.) My desktop is connected to the switch and while I wouldn’t mind people using bandwidth, I do not want them snooping through my hard drive. While I'm here how do you guys make regular words links?

I'm curious fellow Mefi's. What do you think are three most significant detriments of the Internet to society? Your perspective(s) could be from cultural values, business, education, media, technology, developing countries, privacy, etc. On the flip side, what would you consider the most significant benefits of the Internet to society? No right or wrong answer, just picking your brain...
