The Prius Plug In looks great, and I have been waiting for it to come to Illinois since it was released last year. Toyota's website said for a year that it would be released nationally "in 2013." Recently that has been changed to say "availability in additional states is currently under study." Do any gearheads know what has caused the delay and when (if?) it might become more broadly available? (Bonus question: what is so difficult about releasing it nationwide? Low production? Regulatory issues? It seems like it shouldn't be that hard.)

In an insanely generous offer, my husband's parents are planning to give us their used Toyota Prius sometime next month. My understanding is that they plan to get a new car, don't really need the money from selling it, and are concerned that our current car is getting to be unreliable and thought we might like their old Prius when they replace it with something else. My father-in-law recently had it appraised and says it's worth $11,000. It has 125,000 miles on it. It's silver. That's all I know about it, but they're the type of people who pay very careful attention to maintenance schedules, drive their vehicles gently, and do all the recommended and required repairs and maintenance at the dealership, so it's probably in very good condition.

We're likely going to buy a used (2006 or 2007) Prius soon. Any advice from Prius owners would be appreciated! E.g., problems you've had that we can ask our mechanic to check on before buying; unexpected likes or dislikes about the car; your experience with aging batteries; regrets you didn't buy a different hybrid instead? Thanks all!

CarTalkFilter: Mrs. Rakdaddy drives a '97 Toyota Camry with 38K (no, really). I drive a '05 Prius with just under 95K. We bought Mrs. Rakdaddy a '12 Prius Plugin, and figured we'd do the work to sell one of the other cars rather than trade one in. Of course, now we're not sure which one.

While looking at used Priuses on Craigslist (Minneapolis), I discovered a
dealer in Faribault, MN that sells "repairable" cars. I started wondering where the money was in "repairable" cars and whether it was a scam or not.

Used hybrid cars and their batteries. I want to buy a used hybrid in the US, looking at '04-'07 Toyota Priuses and Honda Civic Hybrids. Looking for your experiences with these cars, things to look out for, driving in winter conditions, and especially any solid info about the service life (yrs/mileage) of the hybrid battery.

Friends, Romans, Crooklynites: I heard the first terrifying sound from my 2005 Prius this morning, and it reminded me that I've been meaning to ask you for mechanic recommendations. I drove out to SF over the summer, and before I drove back I had my car looked at at
Art's Automotive in Berkeley. I had a great experience, and I refuse to go back to the level of "care" I was formerly accustomed to here. I know the likelihood of a hybrid-friendly repair shop is slimmer here in the Big Easty, but I wonder if you might be able to refer me to a mechanic in Brooklyn (or thereabouts) with whom I can entrust my Prius.

I would like help "naming" our brand new black with tan interior '08 Toyota Prius.
I have always loved names for cars that make them seem like part of the family-----my friend's red Subaru was "Ruby" etc. Another friend's caravan was Carrie and so on.
What are some suggestions you have for names for our new black Prius? We are a family of 5 with 2 teens and a tween living in the Pacific Northwest. (I do not know if that matters!)
Thank you!

I just had this unfortunate incident where I was cleaning up from a meeting and someone placed the open quart of half&half in a bag which tipped over in the trunk of a new Prius (which is, of course, rented). I've been soaking it up with towels, lots of water (being careful to avoid the batteries) and even used some "Nature's Miracle" odor remover. What's the best way to continue cleaning up this mess and hopefully be able to preempt any negative effects (i.e. horrible smell).

I've found a new Prius that I might be able to buy before the tax rebate gets chopped in half. Since it's a new, popular car, am I going to be paying full price no matter what or should I try my meager haggling skills? If the latter, what should I aim for and how should I go about it given the "next guy will pay full price" line I'll inevitably encounter?

I would like to purchase a high-mileage / low-emissions vehicle which I can drive (alone) in the carpool lanes around the Bay Area. Hybrids present one option, though I'd rather be in a diesel VW Golf, running biodiesel. I need help figuring out
the requirements listed here to see if a diesel Golf meets them. And does anyone know if filling it with biodiesel changes anything? What other vehicle options are there?
