Used Car Buying Advice

I want a car that is roadtrip-worthy and reliable. I can spend about $2700 cash and could maybe spend $100/month on a car loan, though I'd rather not. I don't care about what the car looks like, just that it's reliable and roadtrip-worthy and automatic transmission. I would be purchasing in the SF Bay Area but potentially moving to colder/snowy areas next year. What should I be looking at and what should my expectations be for that price range? ( Plus bonus q about my current car inside.) [more inside]

Will what I'm planning to do ruin my Prius battery or my life?

Prius MFD weirdness

The Multifunction Display in my 2003 Prius will cheerfully display the settings for the Audio and all that, but the main screen which shows the fuel efficiency is just black. If I show the audio or the Display settings, that comes up just fine, and brightness is normal, but the main display won't show, and the backlight doesn't seem to be lit when on that display. I hooked up a code reader to the socket under the dash, but it's coming back clean. Any ideas?

Help me compare a 2002 and 2006 Prius - both low mileage

Similar to this question, but I am looking at a 2002 and a 2006 Prius. Both have similarly low mileage, but the 2006 is listed at ~$5000 more than the 2002. I would prefer the larger interior space and the newer car, but am not sure it's worth it. What else should I consider? [more inside]

I'm buying a used Prius- What do I need to know?

Full disclosure: I'm not only buying a used Prius, this is my first car purchase ever. New York to Seoul to LA, at 31 I'm buying my first car. At any rate, because of mileage and ethics, I'm pretty set on a used Prius, aiming for 2012+ with a Package Two trim. Given that, what do I need to know? More inside... [more inside]

Trade-in or sell 2013 Prius in Seattle?

My wife has a 2013 Prius Persona Edition with only 10,000 miles on it in perfect condition. After almost two years of ownership, she wants to get something less expensive and more fun to drive. She got a 0% APR loan and paid nothing down. The dealership has made us an offer very close to what she owes on the loan, so we could essentially pay it off and come close to even. [more inside]

Prius: Replace, recondition, or junk?

My 2005 Toyota Prius (160K miles) recently had a check engine light. After taking it to a mechanic, it looks like the main battery in the car, the traction battery, has kicked it. Should I replace the car, replace the battery, or pay someone to fix the battery? [more inside]

How to connect my phone to my 2005 Prius -- no audio jack

I have a 2005 Prius, a model that does not have an audio jack or bluetooth. I'd like to connect my phone (a Google Nexus 5) to my car stereo but can't see how I can do it, short of totally rewiring the dashboard, which seems like a bad idea to me. I'm looking for ideas for how I can achieve this. I'm not an audiophile, but I'd like to find a way to do it that doesn't make the sound quality awful. Perhaps the simplest thing would be for me to just buy a new car stereo and have it installed? Or is there something else that will solve this problem? Note: I'm not particularly well-informed on things technical, but I'm really good at following directions.

I've driven a 2008 Honda Fit Sport for the last 5 years, right up until it got totaled in a collision last week. I'll be test driving a Prius C tomorrow, but in the meantime I want to hear from anyone who has experience with both cars. Is there an Apple of carmakers?

Which carmakers these days (that sell in the US) have really good build quality? I'm thinking high quality interior materials, excellent fit and finish, as well as well thought out interior components like control layouts, displays, and compartments? Maybe carmakers (or models) that are known for little surprising details? I'm now starting to look for a smaller sedan or maybe hatchback/wagon under $40K. Some of the models I'm looking at so far are the Volvo S60/V60, Subaru Legacy/Impreza, Toyota Prius, Audi A4, maybe BMW X1.

When will the Prius Plug In be available nationwide?

The Prius Plug In looks great, and I have been waiting for it to come to Illinois since it was released last year. Toyota's website said for a year that it would be released nationally "in 2013." Recently that has been changed to say "availability in additional states is currently under study." Do any gearheads know what has caused the delay and when (if?) it might become more broadly available? (Bonus question: what is so difficult about releasing it nationwide? Low production? Regulatory issues? It seems like it shouldn't be that hard.)

What can I expect in owning a used Prius?

In an insanely generous offer, my husband's parents are planning to give us their used Toyota Prius sometime next month. My understanding is that they plan to get a new car, don't really need the money from selling it, and are concerned that our current car is getting to be unreliable and thought we might like their old Prius when they replace it with something else. My father-in-law recently had it appraised and says it's worth $11,000. It has 125,000 miles on it. It's silver. That's all I know about it, but they're the type of people who pay very careful attention to maintenance schedules, drive their vehicles gently, and do all the recommended and required repairs and maintenance at the dealership, so it's probably in very good condition. Help me find a Prius doctor in Brooklyn?

Friends, Romans, Crooklynites: I heard the first terrifying sound from my 2005 Prius this morning, and it reminded me that I've been meaning to ask you for mechanic recommendations. I drove out to SF over the summer, and before I drove back I had my car looked at at Art's Automotive in Berkeley. I had a great experience, and I refuse to go back to the level of "care" I was formerly accustomed to here. I know the likelihood of a hybrid-friendly repair shop is slimmer here in the Big Easty, but I wonder if you might be able to refer me to a mechanic in Brooklyn (or thereabouts) with whom I can entrust my Prius. crying while driving over spilled milk

I just had this unfortunate incident where I was cleaning up from a meeting and someone placed the open quart of half&half in a bag which tipped over in the trunk of a new Prius (which is, of course, rented). I've been soaking it up with towels, lots of water (being careful to avoid the batteries) and even used some "Nature's Miracle" odor remover. What's the best way to continue cleaning up this mess and hopefully be able to preempt any negative effects (i.e. horrible smell).
