I'm looking to get up to speed on the current state of 3D printing, from a pretty high level. I'd like to know what the major technologies are, how they compare to each other, who the major players are, and how their products compare with each other. [more inside]
I have a public domain pdf book that I'd like to have a durable hard copy of. Googling throws up too many false positives, and the most relevant previous AskMeFi doesn't really help. Recommendations?
I'm looking for the best way to create a custom printed map with about 100 locations (in 2 or 3 categories) noted, and a legend to explain them. I don't know the first thing about GIS. [more inside]

Is there an online tool, or function in Word, to see what a design would look like when printed in black and white, or how it might turn out when photocopied? [more inside]
This is one of the weirder questions I've hopped on here to ask, but I figured if anyone would have the answer, it'd be the MeFi Hivemind. I'm working with a team on a game that was happily funded some time ago. Because its a retro nostalgia-thon, we'd love to offer a limited run of SNES boxes customized to our game. Finding the template was no problem, finding a printer is quite another. We'd prefer to ship them flat, but cut and scored so that when people got them at home, they could just fold and glue and blammo. We're having trouble finding a printer who could meet those needs- All of our previous print experience is in screen/offset/apparel, not in a weird custom job like this. Suggestions or thoughts on how to bring our SNES box to life?
I'm looking at a print based project and am on the hunt for A4 or A5 sheets of tire tread, as if it's been removed straight from a tire. Is this possible? [more inside]
How can I get waterproof offset printing for sheets of labels (not rolls, unless there's a good setup for running those rolls through a b&w laser printer)? My local printer doesn't seem to think they can do it. I can't imagine it being completely unavailable, but don't know where to start looking. [more inside]
I have some important (personal) documents that need to be printed (Tax Return, Auto Insurance Cards), and I would rather not drive all the way to Kinkos. Are there any online services that will print relatively small documents (1-8 pages) and mail them to me? [more inside]
I have no printer. I have some documents to be signed and scanned, preferably in the next few hours. How can I accomplish this? [more inside]
I'm having business cards made, and I want them in a mini size (like 70mm X 28mm). But I can't seem to find a union print shop online that does cards with smaller dimensions like that. (Obvs I want a union bug). Thanks, hive-folk!
My wife does oil paintings and would like to sell prints of them. What are the best online venues in North America for printing this kind of art? She wants to make large prints, gliches, etc.
I've been hired by a client to design a (relatively) simple brochure for her. She'd like it to be bilingual (English/French) and, due to this, would ideally like all the content in one language to be on one side of the 8.5"x11" page, so it's easier to read when completely unfolded. It's like a reverse Z-fold... [more inside]
I'm looking for a construction paper thats like back velvet. I feel like I've seen this out in the world before but Im not having any luck with the googles. I am attempting to do a screen printed concert poster in the style of a 70s dayglo black velvet poster, so I need a paper with that look and feel, if it exists.
We want to build a screen printing setup at work. I had a studio back in the day where some friends and I made an exposure table, a printing rig and place to store the screens. That part, I've got down. What I don't know how to get around here is a spray booth. There is no water source in the actual studio. We do, however, have a kitchen area and there are bathrooms so I have access to water, I just need to figure out a good way to put this together. Does anyone have experience with printing in less than ideal places? Thanks!
I'd like to use my computer to generate output that looks like it was typewritten, not like it's a photocopy of something typewritten, i.e., with some form of mechanical impact printing. What's the cheapest way to do this? [more inside]

My wife and I are looking into investing in a 3D printer in the $2-3,000 price range. Can anyone who actually owns one / has used one extensively give any suggestions on brands/models to look at? We're hoping for a basic desktop model with a size capacity of about 8"x8"x8" for making small props, prototypes, etc. Also, what can one expect to pay for the "goop" or whatever they use for a printing medium?
My Dad has an old (5+ years) PC running Windows Vista, and a laser printer. Over the last few months, he's started to have problems printing pdfs. Help me fix the problem, please! [more inside]
I'm trying to create a book of tweets. I've screencapped images of tweets as both jpegs and pngs, and uploaded them to four different "make a book" sites (Picaboo, Mixbook, Snapfish, and Shutterfly) and each time, the site warns me that the image is too low-quality to print well. The image preview does not look good. [more inside]
I need to get 4 roughly A3 sized giclée prints produced from my own digital artwork for an art show and I'm looking for a printing company in the UK. I really need them by the end of the coming week. I live in a rural area so I need somewhere that does mail order. There is a general print shop in my nearest town but I don't think they'll be able to do the quality I'll need from an ordinary print (although I could be wrong I've done this before) I've tried a couple of companies with other things but I was not happy with the quality of one and the other has still not delivered a week after their quoted turn around time. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I'm having a devil of a time getting my long Wordpress pages to print properly. [more inside]
A local non-profit I'm with holds monthly events and sells tickets. Right now the tickets are printed in bulk. We have full price tickets, student/senior tickets, and comp (free) tickets. We'd like to have more flexibility to introduce different price points as test runs and easily track how they go. We'd also like to be able to keep better tabs on the comp tickets, by differentiating tickets given to volunteers versus comp tickets given to sponsors, for example. [more inside]
My original proposed topic for a publication I'm writing in was about printing organs and bone marrow but it may be rejected because someone else proposed the same idea. I'm currently brainstorming ideas before tomorrow. Currently I'm thinking of writing of genetically engineered humans. Any other ideas?
This seems like it ought to be a simple question but I'm not finding the answer myself. Someone here must already know. I would like to buy sheets of printable adhesive labels suitable for sticking on 1.5ml/2.0ml microcentrifuge tubes. Ideally I would like both dots for the caps and little rectangles for the sides. They don't need to be able to stand up to particularly tough conditions, except that they shouldn't run if they get wet. Also, they should be cheap as I am a grad student and would be buying them out of my own pocket. I am just sick of writing the same teeny tiny letters over and over and over again with an ultrafine Sharpie. Can somebody here point me to a product that I can buy that would suit my needs? Is there anyone in MeFi-land who runs a small--or not-so-small--online-based T-shirt/printed garment business who has experience in DTG/Screen print outsourcing through fulfillment companies? I'm looking to print business cards. 300 dpi seems to be the standard online but that isn't sufficient for my design. Anyone know an online company that prints 1200 dpi (or higher)?
I'd like to order a bunch of small transparent adhesive labels with metallic printing. What is this printing style/technique called? How much should I expect to pay? And can you recommend someone who does this and can handle smaller runs? [more inside]
I want to get business cards with borders. I was looking at moo, and they recommend not using a border because cropping may not be even on all sides. I'm not talking about scientific precision, but I would like my cards to appear even on all sides. Is this realistic, and are there other companies that do this better? I would also like to be able to get rounded corners and some sort of smooth matte or glossy finish on both sides.
Over the next month or so, I may occasionally need to do some printing in London (never more than 10-50 pages). Is there anywhere near the Waterloo station where I could bring a usb drive or a laptop and easily and inexpensively print out black and white documents using a laser-printer? Self-service would be preferable. Perhaps there might be one or more chains of printing places (like FedEx/Kinko's in the US) that offers this service throughout the UK? Many thanks for any suggestions.
Here's the issue—every single print shop I ask can only do runs of like 500 sheets for personal letterhead. I want only 50 sheets with envelopes, and I don't want to pay a freaking arm and leg for nice letterhead. How can I do this? I don't want something that's merely laser printed onto cheap paper. I'd like something that's nice, professional, and exudes quality. I've seen these at Crane, but they're still quite expensive. Any ideas mefites?
Is there any research on people who pay for publicly available documents that are bound and sold by the government, not third parties? I was fascinated that when the 911 Commission issued it's report, it flew off the shelves when it was bound and sold by the GPO even though the same report was also fully available online. I'm also not referring to services provided by USSearch or KnowX. I mean, I guess, anything produced by the Government Printing Office that is for sale as a bound document (since they are also public documents), but is also available for free online. I would think if people could repackage and sell publicly available documents, that would open a whole world of new publishing opportunities.
My wife is in Paris attending a conference, and just realized that she didn't bring her business cards along! I know that freestanding machines exist to make these while-you-wait in other cities, but where can one go to get same-day business cards in Paris? Difficulty: some, but limited, French language ability.

I just got a cheap-o HP printer that features two sided printing. It seems to print on one side, suck the paper back in, and print on the other side. Does anyone know how this works? Does it flip the paper over? My guess is that it loops it back in (back facing down), probably raises the heads, and "prints upside down" the other side. But I'd love to see a diagram or video. Can't find one, though.
My work has to produce sometimes one, sometimes two at most DVDs when we do a transfer of an older video recording to digital file. We're looking to purchase a desktop printer for use with DVDs, and I'm hoping the mefi community has recommendations! [more inside]
