Why are "i386" drivers supplied, and not 64-bit, for things like printer drivers?

My HP deskjet 8000's printer drivers won't allow me to print at all when 1 color of ink is out. Yes, even if I only want to print in black and white. Aside from going back and time and telling me not to buy this POS, can you help me? Are there hacked drivers?

Trouble setting up printing from OS X (10.5.7) to an HP PSC 2410 shared from PC running Ubuntu 9.10. Mainly seems to be a problem finding a proper CUPS-aware driver on the OS X side. Is there a way around this?

I have an
HP ScanJet 5200C, which had previosuly been used on a Windows system. I would like to use it with a Mac (OSX 1.3), but HP doesn't seem to offer driver software for it. Can it be done?
