I have to be in Manhattan Dec 6th - Dec 9th. My flight is booked and my appointments are scheduled. I am flying solo. My plan was to stay in Manhattan, and goof off after my appointments. Unfortunately, every hotel in Manhattan for those days is $600+ a night. Ordinarily I can Priceline $150 and get bites, but even after a $250 bid, I got nothing on a 3 / 4 *. So......where should I stay and still be able to explore Manhattan without freezing my ass off?? I can be a bit of a snob and would prefer not to stay in something lower than 3*. Any secret Manhattan hotels that I can get into that are not sh*t holes? Brooklyn? New Jersey? Connecticut?

I need to join a gym, and haven't belonged to one since a Y membership in 1996. Apparently, gyms don't tell you what they charge unless you go meet a sales rep in person. This seems extremely shady and sets off mental warning bells. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Forewarned is forearmed, etc.
(Auxillary question, possibly whinefilter; how do they get away with this? Why can't I comparison shop in a reasonable manner?)

What are the best sites on the Internet that guide you to finding the best prices on a wide range of consumer items? I want to do comparison shopping, by locating the biggest selection from reputable stores (sites), compare product features, prices, possibly read reviews, but that's not a must, to get the best deals, period. In the past, I’ve used: BizRate, PriceGrabber, Shopping.com, and Froogle (Google). I know there must be more, or better sites out there, so what are they and let me know your experiences – pro & con.

How far in advance, or how close to the time, is the most advantageous time to purchase airline tickets in order to get the cheapest fares? For instance, if I were planning to travel in early August, and it's late April now, should I buy my ticket now, or should I wait until closer to the time (and how close is the "sweet spot")? Are there risks of the price going up substantially (more than $100)? This refers to U.S. travel (SEA-ATL in this case), traveling mid-week, with a weekend stay.

I thought of asking this question in response to this comment, but thought it was better off here:
Why are legal drug prices so expensive. As a biochemistry major, I see first-hand how expensive very simple reagents and machines are to create simple research. It seems somewhat reasonable that in my naive on little world, drug prices are somewhat justified by the cost of r&d. Are there any reports out there of where drug companies spend their money. i.e., can I see how much are sent on salaries, equipment, court fees, etc to get more of an understanding of drug company costs and profits, especially since I'll probably being getting a job at one in a few months. Also, info on why drugs (beyond their being greedy) are so expensive in The States (or so I hear) vs. other parts of the world would be useful, too.

Gas (petrol) question: We've had discussions in the blue about regional price differences for gasoline. But why do different gas stations in the same market region come so close to each other on price? Are the markets for the raw oil and the refining so limited that they all end up with the same cost? I find that hard to believe. Also, is there any difference, in real terms, between gasoline from one vendor versus gas from another?

Since I'm about to graduate and move on with life, I'm thinking of ditching my 15 year old twin mattress. What should I look for in a new queen-sized mattress, and how should I pick one? How do I know I'm not getting ripped off? I've been trying to look at ads in the newspaper and I've gone into a few stores, but everything seems to be designed to be confusing, and nothing seems to compare across manufacturers ... or even in the same manufacturer's line.
