I'm traveling with a friend to Tokyo next year, May 24th to June 6th. I've had Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak and Skyscanner on heavy rotation for three weeks and the best price I can find for travel time shorter than 24 hours is about $1500 round-trip. I'd rather not get scolded by our friends for paying too much, and Googling "nyc to tokyo airfare price range" is giving me the equivalent of hearing "usual and customary" from my insurance company, so I am turning to MeFites for help. Possible pertinent details below the fold. [more inside]

I like buying things on Amazon prime, but only if they are roughly equal to or less than the cost of something that can be found in a supermarket. Is there some site that I can use to find a reasonable "supermarket price" (not the sale price) for things with brand names (like shaving cream or garbage bags) so that I can make sure I'm not paying well above the market price for something? I'd imagine prices vary by region, but I'm willing to take any suggestions. [more inside]

My wife is asking her students to chart comparisons between prices of objects/items from the year they were born compared to prices today. Her kids are having a difficult time finding those prices from 1998 (the year most of them were born). I've struck out as well. Do you have any online sources for catalogues, price lists, etc from '98?

I'm trying to track recent sale prices for several painters. The best-known tool is ArtNet, but a 24 hr pass costs $19 and only allows search for five artists. And I don't see any libraries in my county system that have memberships.
Can anyone recommend a less expensive alternative, or one more likely to be available in public libraries?

Should I buy a house in Bristol, UK, or wait?
I have a 100k deposit, and a 100k mortgage in principle. Should I buy a house or flat in Bristol UK?
I am single, 32, more or less happy renting, and have no reason to buy other than a sense of cultural obligation, boredom with renting, and available cash.
There is nothing tying me to Bristol, if you have any golden location tips I'm willing to travel.

I need to mail some important documents from the US to Russia via a method that is trackable. The cheapest price I can find is $28.95 via USPS. Does anyone know of a less expensive method that includes tracking information? These are just paper documents, not a package. Thanks!

Help me find this newly-published (within the last month) graph! This article/ webpage had a graph of house prices in different countries relative to income (?). The graph was interactive and had sliding bars where you could adjust for different time periods and different countries (US, UK, Switzerland, Japan, China, etc). I think I probably saw it on either BBC or NYTimes website, maybe Slate or FT. [more inside]

Why do jewelers always insist of giving prices read from a calculator screen and not from the price tag of the piece I'm looking at?
Do they give different people different prices? Or is it a way of accounting for fluctuating prices of gold or gems from week to week?

I have to be in Manhattan Dec 6th - Dec 9th. My flight is booked and my appointments are scheduled. I am flying solo. My plan was to stay in Manhattan, and goof off after my appointments. Unfortunately, every hotel in Manhattan for those days is $600+ a night. Ordinarily I can Priceline $150 and get bites, but even after a $250 bid, I got nothing on a 3 / 4 *. So......where should I stay and still be able to explore Manhattan without freezing my ass off?? I can be a bit of a snob and would prefer not to stay in something lower than 3*. Any secret Manhattan hotels that I can get into that are not sh*t holes? Brooklyn? New Jersey? Connecticut?
