Question for the "guess culture" people: If a friend wants to leave a gift I gave her behind at my house for a year, is that likely to be her way of saying she doesn't really want it? Does that mean I can treat the gift as mine?

Best friend is moving back home to Portland after many years of living in NYC. I'd love to present her with an Oregon-shaped (and delicious) cake at her going away party. Where could I get this in the NYC area? Any borough will do.
Thanks!

I'd like to buy a gift for a good friend who is a flight instructor (small planes, one-on-one with students); he hasn't been doing it all that long, and doesn't have a huge amount of personal equipment. Anything nice/fancy that is also incredibly useful to have that his employer wouldn't provide? Also, any iPad/iPhone accessories for pilots? Say anything up to $500 (or even a bit more) or so - though unless I was completely assured he'd love the gift, I'd prefer cheaper. Thanks!

For Christmas this year I would love to give my family food-of-the-month type gifts from places like
Murrays and
Zingermans, but those places don't deliver to Canada, where most of my family members live. Can you recommend really great subscription/gift food that's either Canada-based, or delivers to Canada?

I wanted to get some cupcakes delivered as a gift, but that's too highly dependent on when somebody is home to receive them. And flowers are too boring. What other sort of cool, lovely gift could I send somebody? (For ordering online, and this is in Australia.)

Present ideas for the chili lover. I'm trying to think of a gift basket for a burgeoning chili-chef, but I know very little about chili and have no ideas outside a nice cut of meat and it would be nice to get them something that would last a little more long-term. Chili-makers, are there any really nice spices you like in your chili or other special ingredients? A specific tool or pot you find indispensable? Any "idea" books (this person is not the type to follow strict recipes, but would likely follow something that said "try this for this effect")?

My husband's second cousin and her mother are very generously hosting a baby shower for me. How much would it be appropriate for me to spend on thank-you/hostess gifts for them? (My sister said the amount I was planning to spend was too much.) Does it matter if I give the presents before/after instead of during the shower? Any suggestions of a good grown mother/daughter gift? (One idea would be to get gift certificates for two manicures they could use together, although I generally don't like gift certificates.) In case it matters, this is in the San Francisco Bay area.

What gifts do you give (or receive) either every year to the same person, or gifts that you always give to people at a particular age? Or, are there any products or books that are released each year that you think are worthwhile. I am, of course, after suggestions of things you like / the receiver genuinely appears to like.
For example, does the newest baby in the family always get a Bunnykins set for their first Christmas? Does your aunt always get you a pair of cashmere socks for your birthday?

It's my boyfriend's birthday soon, and I want to make the present giving AWESOME! Have already purchased presents and booked flights to be with him. Am organising special birthday meals for him, and a couple of activities too, so most of the day is pretty much sorted. But I really really want the present giving/opening experience in particular to be super fun for him. I'm thinking along the lines of a treasure hunt with clues so he has to hunt for the presents... Or wrapping the presents in a giant box and painting it like a cake with sparklers on top! Or multiple layers of wrapping disguising the present...Or, um, something else. But I don't know what exactly. I just want to make it a completely excellent fun surprise for him.
