Yes, I'm being nosy

When I go to the prescription counter at a local pharmacy in a not-so-great area, I often am waiting behind people getting a liquid prescription that they need to drink in front of the pharmacist. What is this? [more inside]

Will a Kaiser doctor write an Rx that you can take to another pharmacy?

That's pretty much the whole question. I ask because I am signing up for Covered California and am leaning toward Kaiser, as that is the health provider I will have up to Dec. 31 of this year and it would be nice to not switch everything around. But the plan I am looking at charges $19/30 day supply for generic medications, and I know that one of my meds can be bought at Target for $10/90 day supply. I know that the normal Kaiser process is to use the in-house pharmacy, but I wonder if doctors will write a prescription that you can take elsewhere. Medications form the bulk of my healthcare spending so this could potentially make a big difference to my meager budget.

How to get generic meds when doc said "no substitutions"?

In California, is there a simple way to get the pharmacy to fill my "no substitutions" name-brand prescription with a generic instead? I am temporarily without health insurance and can't afford the very expensive name-brand drug; I can't ask the prescribing doctor to change the scrip because they're no longer my doctor and I'm in a different state. Birth control in NYC

I'm in a bit of a pickle- I need to get a new prescription for the pill but the GYN who's been prescribing it can no longer do so. I've been contacting various clinics but I'm getting quoted prices of $60-80 in order to see the doctor before they will write the script. I'm broke and unemployed, but still have insurance. How the heck can I get a new script without paying an arm and a leg? More details inside. [more inside]

Can I get a prescription from my doctor for a urine drug test?

Can I get a prescription from my doctor for a urine drug test? I quit smoking marijuana ~25 days ago. Before quitting I smoked once or twice everyday. I ordered some dipstick drug test off the internet and started testing my urine after 5 days of not smoking. About 7 days ago the tests started coming up negative. I'd like to get this confirmed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Can I ask my primary care physician for a prescription for one? If I do, will he get the results and report them to my insurance company? [more inside]

How to avoid multiple office visits for prescriptions?

I'm prescribed 30mg of Adderall XR for my adhd. I was diagnosed and prescribed it from the psychiatrist that my job's health insurance uses. He says he can only prescribe it to me one prescription at a time. My high co-pays are adding up and its becoming costly to have to go every time. My doc tries to help by giving me two scripts at a time (one with the correct date and one a month out) but I'm still shelling out a lot six times a year to get my prescribed medication. I completely understand that Adderall is abused in the US and there needs to be controls on how its dispensed. I wouldn't mind going every six months so he can check up on me and monitor my use of it. Usually our appointments are 15 min chats about my mood and any side effects I may be experiencing. I'm no MD but that hardly seems worth an in office visit. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Is there a way around this?

My eyes, my eyes -- the sunglasses do nothing!

I'm looking for a discount online glasses shop like Zenni Optical that sells prescription sunglasses with really dark tint. I bought a couple of pairs from Zenni with 80% tint (the darkest option), and they're not quite cutting it on particularly sunny days. Zenni has said they can't go any darker, so I'm looking for other options. So if you're happy with some very dark (or even mirrored) prescription sunglasses that you've ordered online, tell me where you got 'em!

The logistics of placebos

Acne out, reflux in?
