I live in Atlantic Canada, and in the past year significant, long lasting power outages have become extremely common. We can't afford a generator. What other things would may family and I most benefit from, and what is the best/most reliable ways to power devices? I have a limited budget so we're talking bang for your buck. [more inside]

I have about 15-20 minutes to eat breakfast every morning, and when I walk into the kitchen I often have no idea what to eat. This is because I'm really sensitive to sugary things in the morning and the thought of eating cereal / toast with jam or pb or honey / pancakes / crumpets / pikelets / muffins / whatever makes me queasy.
So I really crave savoury things! But I don't know many savoury breakfast foods, and often I don't have enough time to make them e.g. bacon and eggs. And there are only so many times a week I can eat toast without wanting to cease existing. If you have any great recipes for savoury breakfast foods that can be prepared and eaten quickly, or that can be prepared the night before and then be thrown together quickly, I'd love to hear them!
Bonus points for hot foods.
Caveat: I don't like eggs just by themselves. [more inside]

I've decided to actually use my medical insurance as it was intended, rather than waiting for some body part to fall off. I have my first ever physical scheduled in 2 weeks. How do I bring up health concerns with my doctor in a way that doesn't make me sound like a hypochondriac with an internet connection? [more inside]

How do I prepare myself mentally for university? What did you do to make the experience smoother and less stressful? Alternatively, what did you do that I should avoid? [more inside]

I'm going to learn to snowboard this winter. I have at least a month to prepare. What sort of exercises and activities can I do to increase my fitness for this activity? I have access to a gym, skating rink, hiking, biking, etc., and a recently acquired snowboard that is sitting in my livingroom. [more inside]

I need to provide breakfast/brunch-type food to a large number of people. What are some good ways to cook typical breakfast dishes such as omelettes, pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, etc. so that I can store and reheat them? [more inside]

Cicadas will attack (well, not attack, but annoy) the Eastern United States starting in about a month. What kinds of things are people doing to prepare, and for a pedestrian and cyclist, are there any recommendations for keeping these things out of my hair (literally)? [more inside]
