What are the hardest to prepare recipes in history?

I'm putting together a list of recipes that only master cooks take on once they're at the highest levels. Dishes where the sauce alone can take two days. I need recipes that aren't new (aka it requires a magnetic cooktop) or too non-western. And I'd love if there was anything that had some history (though in general if it's a dish over 30 years old, it's going to). As in "It was prepared once for President McKinley...who fired the chef." Ideas? [more inside]

Always be prepared?

Currently 10 weeks pregnant with our first. We are trying to brainstorm everything we can possibly do ahead of time to make maternity leave and the first weeks/months home with a newborn go as smoothly as possible. Some examples: buy a chest freezer and fill it with meals that can just be popped in the microwave or oven. Save up for doggie day care passes to get our dogs out of the house and tired out in the beginning. Veteran parents, please enlighten us as to anything and everything else we can be doing to help us get through the acclimation period! [more inside]

How to prepare for disaster without going all Doomsday Preppers

I think it's not too tin-foil-hatty to say that we're getting more extreme weather because of climate change. Let's say you're city dwelling DINKs with a cat and you want to kit out one of those under bed storage boxes with supplies (food? candles? batteries? whiskey? tiny cat hard hat? I really have no idea) in case of extreme weather. What would you include? [more inside]

Checkin' on my chicken

I just cooked a bunch of chicken but had left it on the countertop for one hour in my 75 degree apartment (forgot while running errand). The USDA does not recommend this. Should I eat it? Specifics: they are drumsticks, had thawed overnight in the fridge but were still not totally defrosted, and were cooked for 50 minutes in the oven at 400 degrees.

First time tri-athlete - any hints and tips?

I've just entered a fairly short triathlon - 400m swim (in Sydney Harbour, so not open ocean but not a pool), 8km cycle, 4km run. The route for the cycle and the run is fairly easy and my level of fitness is such that I could definitely do both of those individually with no problem at all. This weekend I'll be doing an 8km cycle followed immediately by a 4km run just to make sure, but I don't foresee any problems. [more inside]

If it doesn't kill me, will it make me stronger or weaker

Best way, other than walking a lot (too time-consuming), to prepare for walking a lot, in a city, carrying a substantial bag? A recent walking-intensive two-week trip nearly killed my poor feet. Should I just resign myself to babying my feet when traveling? [more inside]
