FML.

Car Insurance Filter: I bumped a parked car an hour ago. They'll probably contact me tomorrow. Insurance or out-of-pocket? (More than meets the eye.) So, I'm staying with a relative who lives on a pretty steep hill. I was parked just below a driveway, with another car paralleled in front of me. (Here's where my brain's conditioning kicks in: it was raining, he was parked WAY too close to my front, etc., etc...)

But all that aside, the fact is, I put my car in neutral instead of reverse, and in the split-second when I released my foot and gassed it, expecting to roll up and away from his rear bumper, I instead rolled downwards and gave it a little kiss. Nothing too serious -- just enough so that there's clear marks where the screws met his bumper. Being that it was a one-car affair, I think I may have been at fault. (Get it? Understatement! Ha!)

The "victim" car: a Scion tC, of which I can't make the year. The car doesn't have any after-market body modifications, so I think it's safe to say the damaged bumper was stock. Also, the hit was such that I really don't think I put anything under the bumper out of alignment.

I wrote a little note, telling the owner to call me when he gets it so that we can settle fixing his car. The catch: it's my aunty's car, and she's the one who's got the insurance policy on it. She's not the one I'm living with, but she does a lot for my family and I, and I'm really hesitant to put any of this on her plate.

The question: Given the minor nature of the accident and the tricky nature of the insurance, would it be better to just settle it out-of-pocket? Are there things that I should ensure that would make the out-of-pocket settlement easier or more fair (for me)? I read the first post that comes up when you search AskMeFi for "car insurance," and it talked about a form preventing later claims. Necessary?

Source for Medical Malpractice Insurance Quotes for Doctors/Hospitals?

Do you know of any reasonably credible sources that list the premiums and deductibles that hospitals/doctors (of any kind, but largely medical surgeons for intensive-care/emergency/surgical hospitals) pay for medical malpractice insurance? I'm researching figures for a malpractice reform idea. The idea is based on a rumor that medical malpractice insurance is an absurdly burdensome expense for hospitals/doctors who must pay it in order to legitimately practice. If there were a way to eliminate that particular burden, the massive periodic (monthly/etc) savings would gradually equal lesser medical expenses for Billy and Susie down the line.

My idea was to eliminate the need for malpractice insurance by enacting legislation requiring the hospital in question to add the malpracticed-against as simply a new employee, paid out of the standard payroll expenses, at a comfort-offering rate (variable according to terms of the suit and local standards of living) instead of having to lop over this giant sum (and pay insurance for the dark cloud of a giant sum to loom over them, waiting to be dished out). Does this idea hold much water?

Premium Podcast Service

I'm looking for a premium podcasting service. Here is what I need. I need to be able to upload MP3 files to a server which will allow me to manage about 20 different private URL podcasts for a small internship's classes. Ideally this service would have simple embed HTML code so we can add a player to web pages. Each private podcast will have 16-20 hours of content. I also need the ability to create a public podcast which people can subscribe to with iTunes.

Any thoughts?

What other consumer goods have "premium" versions that are identical to the budget version?

The only difference between regular vodka and super premium vodka is the price. Double shielded, gold plated speaker cables work just as well as cheap ones.

What other consumer goods have "premium" versions that are identical to the budget version? I'm not really looking for a debate on cables or liqour, just examples where packaging and price tag determine the difference on bulk goods.

Questions about gasoline.

All about gasoline. (Apologies in advance on the two-fer.)

1) This morning, mrs. grateful accidentally filled up the tank with diesel instead of regular gas. The car stopped running, and she had it towed back to the station. They emptied the tank and flushed the system. Are there any long-term deleterious effects that we need to be concerned about?

2) In discussing the previous event, my father-in-law insisted that I could adjust my car so that it would no longer require premium gas. What adjustments is he talking about, and would they harm the engine in any way?
