Getting to know my placenta previa

I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first child. Baby is fine, but today I was diagnosed with a complete placenta previa. I have not experienced any bleeding. I'm on pelvic rest, but my CNM didn't advise any other activity restrictions. I'm finding quite a bit of conflicting information out there, and it seems like other medical practitioners recommend partial or complete bed rest. How serious is this and what should I be doing?

Gift for pregnant rail commuter

Someone I know is pregnant and I'd like to give her a gift. She does a more than hour long rail commute every day and I was hoping to get her something to make this commute easier on her in the coming months. This is the same person who gave me a good pair of headphones when I had a 3.5 hour commute a few years ago and I'd love to give her something that makes her commute better in the same way those headphones made mine better. Newbie Needs Resources on Pregnancy, Childbirth, Parenting, etc.

I am a pregnant for the first time, and looking for resources (primarily web, but not limited to it) on pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. This shouldn't be so hard, right? But I really want blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, websites, etc. that are funny or snarky or absurd, as well as smart, feminist/liberal, crunchy, scientific, and welcoming of a variety of backgrounds/lifestyles. (Maybe not all at once, but I'll take what I can get.) I'm coming up short. Help? [more inside]

What do I get my pregnant wife for her birthday?

My wife is 36 weeks pregnant, and her birthday is next week. What should I get her? I'd like to get something for her rather than something baby-related. But at the same time, she has already taken advantage of many of the luxuries that pregnant women seem to appreciate -- like spa treatments, massages, and prenatal yoga. I'm a little stuck. Any good ideas? [more inside]

Pregnancy announcement at work

You all have helped me out with scripting a number of workplace situations, including lay-off, being hired, and sadly telling HR that I would not need maternity leave (which I asked anonymously, but no longer care if it became known). Plus, I've learned a lot from others' questions. So I'm hoping you can help me out again with telling my brand new employer that I am newly pregnant. [more inside]

Is it crazy to consider teaching a class 8 weeks after having a kid?

Hi! I'm pregnant with my first child, due in early spring. I just found out that I can teach a short (college) summer school course that starts about 10 weeks after I'm due. (Who knows, if I'm late, it could be just 8 weeks.) The pay is very good, and we kind of need it, but I don't want to sign up for something I'll regret. [more inside]

Help us (kindly) lie to our drinking buddies

Just found out we're pregnant - hurrah! Our dear friends throw a smasher of a Halloween party every year - ack! We're looking forward to shouting the news from the mountaintops, but feel that the 9 weeks along I'll be come Oct 31 is too early to shout. What are some legitimate reasons why a normally social drinker can't have alcohol that won't raise a lot of eyebrows? [more inside]

How do I get through a tough pregnancy without losing my mind?

I am 15 weeks pregnant with awful, constant 'morning' sickness. I'm doing what I can to manage it (including taking medication) but it looks like it's going to be around for a while. So what I'm looking for is suggestions on how to deal with the psychological impact it's having on me, and the limitations it's putting on my life, because the thought of another week/month/trimester of being this ill is really getting me down. Everyone in me is a bird, but landlords won't rent to any of us.

My current rental house is too small, so I'm looking for a larger house or apartment to rent when my lease is up next month. I have excellent income and strong credit and good references, with roots in the area. I'm friendly and professional. But I have a feeling that potential landlords may be refusing to rent to me because they suspect I am pregnant. (I am not.) [more inside]

What open-ended questions will help pregnant daughter mull her options?

Our daughter, "Mimi," is a divorced single 38 year-old mother of three who lives about 4 hours away. Over the past two years we've become quasi-surrogate parents to "Kato," a 26-year old guy who we like very much. Kato recently moved into our guest house and so six weeks ago he and Mimi met when she and her kids were visiting: obvious sparks. We promptly left on a four week trip and surmised that they were hooking up. But no one said anything after we returned and we kept mum, thinking that perhaps it had run its course. Last night Kato dropped the big bomb: Mimi's pregnant and they want to keep the baby and "make it work." [more inside]

PUPPS Pregnancy Rash - Help!!!

On Monday I was diagnosed with PUPPS, a horrible pregnancy rash that is supposed to last for the remainder of my pregnancy. Everything I'm reading about this online is freaking me out. I have a follow up appointment next week, but I could really use your help. [more inside]

Today's the day! Or is it tomorrow?

How did you decide when to 'start trying' (for babies)? What made you say February = birth control, March = none ? How did you make the leap from the abstract "let's start trying next year" to "next time we have sex, we're 'trying'"? I always kind of thought I'd have a happy accident, but it's clear we going to have to *try* for this baby... but when? [more inside]

Alternatives to shaving for pregnant ladies?

I hate shaving my legs. I'm a hairy lady with dark leg hair, and shaving always itches & hurts, no matter what shaving cream or lotions I use. I usually wax in the summer and ignore my legs in the winter, but my toddler would love it if we went to the pool, and I'm fifteen weeks pregnant. Can I get a leg wax while I'm pregnant? Are there other options I haven't thought about? Depilatories don't work for me, and I'm not comfortable taking my hairy hairy legs to the pool. The last time I was pregnant, I didn't go swimming; I just wore long pants or leggings the whole time. (Bikini line isn't a concern; I always wear board shorts anyway, and I have awesome maternity ones I'm excited to fit into.)

Flat too hot, what to do?

I rented an apartment in Bonn on very short notice, and it turned out to be a loft. When he weather was cold it was ok, but once it got to 85 degrees it became unliveable. Of course there is no ac, so me and my pregnant wife went to a hotel till it cools off. Is there anything we can do regarding the rent? Do you think it's reasonable for someone to rent out a loft without mentioning that it is one? If I can't sleep in the apartment and he offers no solution but a fan, is this ok somehow? I was referred to this guy through the institute we are visiting, so maybe the secretaries can make him pay if I have a case.
