Thin screen or tablet for poster presentations

My graduate research has recently headed in a video-heavy direction, which makes the ol' poster presentation format somewhat challenging. I'd like to have a thin screen or tablet to hold — or better yet, mount — where I can easily play a number of videos. What's my best option? Videos work well for talks, but occasionally I have to give a poster and then it's a real pain. I thought of getting an iPad and somehow mounting it on the board, and maybe even cutting my poster around it, but I suspect that would be kind of tacky and the mounting situation is different at every event.

I don't really need much of an elaborate operating system, so paying extra for a (heavy) iPad seems a bit excessive, but ideally I'd like something about that size. My iPod is too small. Does anyone just make super-thin displays that can play off a flash drive?

Note: My videos are currently .avi or .wmv format, but I can adjust them. I saw this thread, but it's not quite what I'm looking for.

Where can I get posters/flyers printed in or near Heidelberg, Germany?

I live in Heidelberg, Germany and I need to print a number of posters and flyers for an upcoming show. But I've been having a lot of problems doing so. Where can I get large posters and double sided flyers printed in Heidelberg (or deliverable to there within a reasonable time frame)? Last year, for a similar show, I used the service flyeralarm.com. We had a number of problems with them (they rejected our files several times for various reasons before they finally got a version they deigned to take, and then they were slow to deliver.)

Nonetheless, not knowing any better options, we tried them again this year. We've been trying since Tuesday, and no matter how much we attempt to tailor the files to their standards, the site refuses to let them upload for one reason or another. Time is starting to become an issue - I must have these in hand two weeks from today at the absolute latest, which sounds like a reasonable amount of time -- but given several business days to print, a few business days to deliver, and our experience last year, I'm starting to get very nervous.

Does anyone know if there is either (1) a local print shop I could use, or (2) another service in Germany that we might have better luck with? They MUST be able to print:

A2 posters (gloss, probably somewhere between 120 and 170 GSM)
A6 double-sided flyers (gloss, probably somewhere between 210 and 300 GSM)

So just a normal copyshop that can do nice A3 posters isn't going to work for us, unfortunately.

Are old-school victory garden posters out in the public domain?

I love these older pics of victory garden posters (e.g.). I was wondering if anyone knew if they were out in the public domain? I'd like to use them for a Tumblr/blog post, but don't want to start ripping folks off willy nilly.

Posters to finish my coworker's office makeover

One of my developers just had got an "office makeover" (mostly a much needed paint job), and now has about a half dozen Ikea RIBBA frames on the walls. Unfortunately, he hasn't figured out what to put in them. Fortunately, we're all here to help him out. I'm looking for suggestions on what I can print out and stick in there when he's gone this week. We're an e-commerce company selling flower bulbs and gardening products, so anything that's either over-the-top geeky or over-the-top flowery would be perfect.

Bonus points for images that work well in the square aspect ratio, match the blue walls/b&w frames, and/or give the frames a theme. Additional bonus points for anything wide format that fits into 4 of the frames that are all in a horizontal row.

Re-interpret and rock (and roll)

I'm a huge fan of science fiction book cover art (especially the 50s through the 80s) and I like to use ideas from them to make posters for my band.

If you need examples: this should explain what I'm looking for.

I'm wondering if there are existing resources for science fiction cover art or general science fiction art that mirrors this sort of style and substance? I especially need resources that are fair use, free to modify etc. etc.

We use these posters to advertise our shows at places which usually have a cover charge -- so I will need content that I can modify to use "commercially". Bonus questions:

. Does anyone know artists or painters in the Boston / Cambridge area good at meddling in this genre?

. I'm also a HUGE fan of propaganda and "war time" art from the early twentieth century. If you know of resources that skew that way, I certainly wouldn't mind.

Where can I get large poster prints of Andy Goldsworthy's more popular pictures?

Where can I get large poster prints of Andy Goldsworthy's more popular pictures? I'm starting as a teacher this upcoming Fall, and I'd like to use some of Andy Goldsworthy's art to decorate my very bare walls. My favorite images are the icicle spiraling around a tree and the stones with aligned cracks down the center, but I really like a lot of his work. However, after an hour or so, googling around, I've only been able to find five full-size posters and I'm not thrilled with any of them. I know he sells his images in books, but is there a source of poster-sized prints for some of his more popular pictures?

How to sell a valuable Grateful Dead poster?

An elderly family friend has an original poster (known as BG074) and program from the 1967 Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead concert at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto. He is interested in selling the poster and program, and I've offered to help out. According to Wolfgang's Vault, "BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression." Accordingly, I've seen auctions and online memorabilia stores listing this poster in the $5,000 and up range, and the program for close to $1,000.

What is the best way to authenticate and sell these items? I contacted Wolfgang's Vault but they don't normally purchase individual items, and the art dealers I've been in touch with don't deal with rock memorabilia. Is there a Sotheby's of rock? Is eBay even worth considering?

Post no bills?

Is it legal to advertise by taping posters to telephone poles, bus shelters, boarded up storefronts, etc? Do outfits like Poster Giant have some kind of special exception? I see it a lot, and it seems like an effective, low-budget way of spreading the word about things (something the tiny nonprofit I run, which does a lot of public-event type programming, could benefit from!)

However, this seems like it's likely illegal (even if widely practiced) — and especially if I were postering on behalf of my organization, I wouldn't want that!

I am in Chicago, if anyone has any local knowledge.

Best place for high quality movie poster prints?

What's the best place to find good quality prints of classic movie posters? I'm looking to hang up movie posters around my house but I don't quite have the budget (or the time) to track down original posters. What's the best place online to find good quality prints for a variety of movie posters?

I've found sites like movieposter.com and allposters.com but I'm worried that their prints might be terrible quality (bad paper, colors are off, etc). Does anyone have experience with these or other sites? Any recommendations?

Make it feel like home.

artfilter: Can you suggest specific prints and posters? We are dressing up our new place and want to buy original art when we can afford it. For now, we've decided to get a few plants and buy prints or posters to frame.

What are some high-quality-but-not-too-expensive prints and posters you like? I'm open to all of your design tastes! Here are a few examples of art we like:

boats with personality

snowy oak

dreamy mountain

Also, how did your art fair through the postal mail?

Other criteria:

Under $100.

Larger formats.

Links to specific prints = bonus! (I've already checked out the sites suggested here.)

Historical-Science wall art for school computer lab?

Looking for affordable posters or other decorative artifacts, with a history-of-technology or retro-futuristic theme, for the stairwell and walls of our small elementary/middle school computer lab. So far I've been looking for colorful, whimsical robot prints, along the lines of these by Eric Joyner, and I have gleefully purchased this one from the wonderful people at 826LA. But I'm not sold on the theme, and I'd like to go more Historical Science than Science Fiction if I can find similarly engaging / visually striking pieces. Can you recommend particular images, or resources, or even other physical objects suitable as wall decoration?

Best source for art prints?

Best source for art prints? I'm looking for some art for my office, and I'm trying to find the best sources for high-quality prints. I've seen the usual online sources that Google returns, and I'm wondering if there are better or different.

Specifically, I'm looking for art from Van Gogh to the Blue Rider - roughly 1890-1925 European and American modernist or quasi-modernist art (e.g. Albert Pinkham Ryder). I'm not worried about framing, I'm just looking for good-quality prints themselves.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm looking for websites, tips and ideas on printing individual posters with odd dimensions. Have you had better luck with local printers, or are there good online options? I've been looking longingly at some images posted by Martin St-Amant on WikiCommons. They're high quality images, but most are in odd dimensions. I also have my own photos that I'd like to get printed, and I like the idea of printing uncommon image sizes. The print shops I've seen list standard sizes and don't mention custom jobs. Can you recommend some online shops, or is this the sort of thing that is best suited to local shops? Perhaps a college print shop with a plotter? Thanks!

Where can I find Portal 2 posters? I'm looking for the kind of safety propaganda posters that were featured in Portal 2, or anything similar you think I would like.

I already know about the products on Valve's site, but the only good one seems to be the "My boss is a robot!" one. The collage one is just that...a collage. I'd want each poster featured in the collage individually, for obvious aesthetic reasons.

I've also found this flickr image, which while I'm not sure it was actually featured in Portal 2, still looks pretty damn awesome.

Does anyone know of any other poster options, especially the safety ones like those featured above, out there for the Aperture Science fan? Even ones that are conceptual art pieces or otherwise based on Portal?

Thanks!

How did they do it without InDesign?

How did basic design work (say, for advertising posters) happen in the analog days? Can I still do it that way today? A student club I was involved with in college had a collection of beautiful posters from the '60s-'80s that were made on a small scale (to advertise events on campus) but that were still very put-together looking, way more beautiful than anything we were capable of when I was there. I suspect these things were made by either silkscreening or playing around with copy machines (or both?) - but I don't know for sure.

I also see things like the liner notes for the Anthology of American Folk Music, but I have no idea how they were laid out (especially the typesetting - a typewriter with a bunch of different fonts?)

Help me make beautiful things that don't have "computer" written all over them!

(Perhaps the answer is just to get better at using InDesign. If you have any pointers on bringing together analog style with digital tools, that would be fantastic too).

Looking for Gursky Schiphol Airport Poster.

A similar question has been asked before but I am looking for a Gursky poster for my apt- ideally (one of) the Schiphol airport series. I can only find the 99 cent store print at MoMa here in NYC (which I don't want bc it reminds me too much of what I see when I go outside everyday!) but I was wondering if I might have better luck at the Tate modern (going there in spring) or Saatchi Gallery. (although both online stores indicate no.). If not, looking for modern art print that is sizable, and maybe nature based? (have damien hirst pharmacy, and a rothko print in pale colors in same room). Thanks!

Looking for advice on my DIY framing project

I have a number of unframed art prints and posters, and would like to do the framing myself. What advice do you have for me? I'm not looking to do anything fancy -- just simple black frames and plexiglass. In the past, I've gone to frame shops for this, but they're always really expensive, and this seems like a DIY-able task. I've never done any framing before, so I would appreciate any advice you have to offer. This could include :

1) Basic knowledge and instructions (and good places to find such)
2) Tricks, hints, protips, "wish-I-would-have-knowns"
3) Recommendations on materials and tools
4) Good places to buy materials and tools. I'm open to buying online or in-person. I live in San Fransisco, if that makes a difference.
5) ... anything else you might think of!

Thanks!

Where can I find more art like this?

I need posters for my walls, and have fallen in love with the concept art for Romeo and Juliet: The War. (Art I am in love with: 1, 2, 3.) However, I can't have it. Any ideas on where to find similar art, in poster-printable quality? The problem is getting high-quality reproductions. I asked the artist directly, and he was very flattered but was afraid of violating his contract with the publisher, and while his other stuff is cool, I am more interested in the sweeping sci-fi landscapes than the mecha-people. 1821 comics doesn't have any kind of contact info on their site, ugh. I tried going through their PR agency, and someone there said they'd get me in touch, but nobody ever did even after I gently prodded them again.

So that's why I've given up on these, and am asking you guys for recommendations on similar art, artists, or art-sources that could work out for me. Thoughts?

help me tie my rec room together.

I want to decorate a rec room in my basement with prints and other items that have been featured in movies and TV shows. I’m not looking for promotional things or other advertisements, but prints that are well known from those movies. Someone should see it and go “Hey!! That’s the thing from that movie! Where did you get that?” Some examples of what I’m looking for:

The poster of Nixon bowling from The Big Lebowski

The famous “Dogs Playing Poker” that has been in a number of shows. (I already have this one)

The “Hipster Doofus” print of Kramer from Seinfeld (a bit dated by now, though)

The “Zero Gravity Toilet” instructions from 2001: A Space Odyssey

Other items will work as long as they’re something you might find in a rec room, not just a prop. The “major award” leg lamp from A Christmas Story would work, since I can use it as a lamp, but a laser gun from Star Wars would not fit as that’s just a prop. The Red Swingline from Office Space probably wouldn’t work. It’s useful, but it’s not something you’d find in a rec room.

These things should have been featured exactly the same way in the show or movie. A poster advertising Gobius Industries (Arrested Development), while funny, isn’t something that was ever on the show. On the other hand, having a copy of The Man Inside Me on my bookshelf would work. Make sense?

It should also be something easily recognizable by a casual fan. Only the biggest Lebowski fans would recognize The Dude’s rug, no matter how well it ties the room together.

What else is there?

I want a Celestino Piatti poster -- will this site make me an Unhappy Owl?

I love Celestino Piatti's picture books and art. I'd love to own an original of one of his many posters. Prices on E-Bay tend to be pretty high, but I keep running across a site that claims to have many of Piatti's posters for a reasonable price. I've been tempted many times. But the site is German, and looks too good to be true. Does anyone have any experience with this site or opinion as to its legitimacy? http://www.poster-gallery.com (I promise this is not Pepsi-Blue!). Link to the Piatti posters here. My instinct is "no."

Buying Posters Online

Where's the best place to buy one-off large posters online? I often want to give friends and family large posters as gifts. Sometimes an actual photo (i.e. with good color/quality) and sometimes just as a more gag-gift infographic kind of thing, where quality matters less.

The kind of site where I can upload my own image or PDF for them to print.

What online sites would you recommend for printing either photo-quality or just-average-quality large posters? (one-off, not multiple copies)
