With the joyous event of the election of a Rudd Labor Government here in Australia, I'm thinking of commemorating the win by taking the front page of a few newspapers and turning them into one of those hard wood posters you can buy from some music stores and poster shops. I am reliably informed that this process is called 'poster boarding' and from the few places I've looked at who do it professionally, this is going to set me back anywhere between $100 to $300 per poster. So I'm wondering if this is something I could do myself. If so, what do I need to buy, what do I need to do (a step by step process would be nice) and, importantly, how easy/hard will this be for a first-timer to do?

I have some jpeg images that I'd like to blow up and print on glossy paper to frame and hang in my room. Is the easiest/cheapest way to go to a local kinkos or copy shop with a usb or are there cheaper alternatives to printing poster sized prints online?

Anyone know of any good large-format (5 foot by 3 foot poster) printers in the Portland, Oregon area? I've been burned by the wrath of Kinko's too many times and I need it within 48 hours. I know the right outfit could do it in just a few minutes, and I don't care what it costs. [more inside]

Movie posters normally carry images that look hand-drawn. Even 'real' landscapes, or people, are frequently represented in this style. Why do studios do this? And are these images really drawn by hand, or are they just photoshopped photos? [more inside]

Frame-wise (or not) what's the best way to display posters like these (sized 12 x 18)? I just bought three of them and it feels wrong just to put push pins through them.

You know those posters put up en-mass on hoardings (the plywood around building sites and whatnot). There are some really cool ones for a certian upcoming movie I've spotted around Toronto. How can I get my grubby little hands on these? It seems like with so many printed and put up, it shouldn't be hard. Just peeling them off the wall never works.

Where can I get cheap 11"x17" poster frames? This size is really hard to find in shops, despite being a standard size for concert/theatre posters. The cheapest I've found in Toronto is CA$17 a piece, for a standard 2-inch pine bordered frame. Any reputable & cheap online stores? I'm looking to buy 10 frames.

I want a christmas present for myself. Specifically, a Hunter Thompson for Sheriff Poster. It doesn't have to be an original, but I'd like it to be of decent enough quality to justify framing.

I found one on ebay for $150, but I haven't been that good this year. Any ideas about obtaining a reasonably (<$50) priced, decent-sized (bigger than 18" wide) version?

After moving around some furniture, my one-room appartment has two large areas of empty wall, both about 2m by 2m (above the bed and the couch). While there's always posters and framed art, I'm looking for something that leaves a little less wall uncovered; I can't find any posters that approach those dimensions. The rasterbator is nice, but I want something with a little more high-saturation colour. I'm currently toying with the idea of buying lots of film, music, fine art, etcetera posters and tessellating them, but this isn't cheap. Any better ideas?

Faux homemade posters asking "Where is my Garden Gnome" (with the URL of this site) have been popping all over my neighborhood in nyc. On the poster (visible here, pdf) is a toll free number with a funny "homespun" message. This definitely has the feel of some guerrilla marketing campaign. (Who would pay for all those toll free calls...) Or is it some new hoax art project? An (inefficient) email harvester (see the disclaimer on the contact page...)? What? Anyone have any idea? (btw: there was an Oct 28th MeFi FPP about gnomes, but the FPP link is dead... was this related?)
