Any tips for photographer patter while taking slightly candid portraits?
For marketing/social media purposes, I’ll be taking individual candid portraits of a large number of people at my company. I’ve already taken a good handful, and although I have a good eye for angles and setting up the shot, I have a difficult time directing the subjects and am hoping to learn some new phrases and strategies.

So I just got this phone fairly recently, it's an android HTC 1x+ and while I love it a lot, I've been running into 2 issues which really bring the whole experience down for me. How can I stop my phone from reloading each page every time I switch tabs and how can I keep my place when it switches from portrait mode to landscape and back?

My mom has discovered acting in her retirement, and wants me to shoot a headshot for her. I can shoot a portrait fine (gear and technique), but I have no idea what to do for an actor's headshot. Can someone in the business tell me what you'd want from a headshot for an older woman?

My family will be in Manhattan in a few weeks for my mother's 60th birthday. One of the ways we would love to celebrate the occasion is with a family portrait. Unfortunately this is not something I have ever done before, so I don't know how to judge which photographer -- and what price -- is right for us. I'm looking for general advice for hiring a photographer, and personal recommendations of photographers you know in Manhattan.

Work just gave me a 19-inch widescreen monitor (1440x900 resolution), which I promptly tilted into portrait mode. What are some software/settings hacks that will allow me to make the most of my setup? I'm running Windows 2000 (yeah, I know) in "Classic" view, Firefox, Outlook, Acrobat Professional v8. If I do get a second companion monitor, it will probably be an older 15-inch model that doesn't tilt.

Suggestions for portrait painters in Vancouver or San Francisco? We're trying to find a painter to commission two portraits for an anniversary present. The painter should be within striking distance to either city and have portraits in their portfolio. And yes, we are generally thinking of paintings, but should you know of a fantastic photographer in the same vein, post it here too.
