Sketching people

I would really like to practice drawing portraits, or at least do figure drawing from life. However, I'm afraid that my subjects might want to see or keep the drawing in the end, and I am afraid of giving them a totally disappointing, bizarrely unrealistic rendition of themselves, because I'm not very good. Has anybody navigated this smoothly before? [more inside]

Does a landscape mode iPhone neckstrap exist?

Does anyone make a neck strap that suspends an iPhone from the neck in landscape mode? I'm looking for a way to shoot some very basic hands-free video while avoiding "vertical video syndrome". I tried searching Amazon and couldn't seem to find such a thing.

Photography tips wanted

I need to take an outdoor photograph of a subject standing in front of a large, white, shiny background (a vehicle). The person and the vehicle are equally important elements in the picture. I need to take the photo when both the subject and the vehicle are available, so I have no control over the date or time or weather. Assuming I need to do this on a bight, sunny day (although I'm hoping for a slightly overcast one) where do I position them relative to the sun? [more inside]

"Floating face" portrait? K-mart portrait? Deluxe glamour shot?

Is there a term for the type of portrait that contains two angles of the same person's face in the same photo? I'm thinking of this style (Will Ferrell). Another example here. These were really popular in the 70s and 80s. I want to get one of the style portraits taken but I don't even know how to describe it, or how to search for it. Does anyone know a name for this style, or even a way to explain it? Also, have you ever seen it being offered these days, and if so, where? I have seen these previous Askme's (1, 2) but they don't really help. Also my google-fu is useless except for that Will Ferrell portrait.

Finding information about person in a portrait

We have inherited a portrait of Prof. Jacques Stock painted in the late 1930's. Based on family tradition he might have been a professor of art. Is there some site or some way we can search the web based on the face in the portrait? We've tried many different ways to search by name and keep coming up with nothing. The artist was a family member who died several years ago. The portrait was discovered after he died. We do know the family member studied portraiture under Thomas Eakins, but that is about all we have to go on. Many thanks for any help you can give.

Help Me be a Charming & Effective Portrait Photographer

Any tips for photographer patter while taking slightly candid portraits? For marketing/social media purposes, I’ll be taking individual candid portraits of a large number of people at my company. I’ve already taken a good handful, and although I have a good eye for angles and setting up the shot, I have a difficult time directing the subjects and am hoping to learn some new phrases and strategies. Where to get a family portrait done in Manhattan?

My family will be in Manhattan in a few weeks for my mother's 60th birthday. One of the ways we would love to celebrate the occasion is with a family portrait. sadly way too excited about actual-size PDF documents

Work just gave me a 19-inch widescreen monitor (1440x900 resolution), which I promptly tilted into portrait mode. What are some software/settings hacks that will allow me to make the most of my setup? I'm running Windows 2000 (yeah, I know) in "Classic" view, Firefox, Outlook, Acrobat Professional v8. If I do get a second companion monitor, it will probably be an older 15-inch model that doesn't tilt.
