In the past few years, most of my mainstay pop culture sites for movie reviews and TV recaps and reviews have shut down or declined drastically in appeal. I need suggestions for replacements to check out that aren't defunct, or sites I already know about that don't fit the bill; I'm not expecting a voluble community, as I'm happy with just good site writers with a good grasp on pop culture and an intelligent perspective. So not AV Club, not Fanfare, not Vulture or TVLine or Entertainment Weekly but somewhere new; a lot more detail follows. [more inside]
Is there a list of all the characters in the Threadless "Mini Pixels" shirt anywhere online? Google searching is not turning up anything, surprisingly. I can recognize a lot of (most?) of them, but definitely not all. You can zoom in on this image of it. I am thinking of giving it as a gift but wanted to satisfy my curiosity first! There must be a list somewhere...
I have four paintings to fill in my office that are blank and I was thinking about doing something with THE. The idea would be a stencil of Jeff Bridges in Lebowski with THE DUDE underneath. And then in the framed pic next to him, maybe Elvis as a stencil with THE KING underneath. And that's all I've got. And I'm not totally sold on either. But I need some options. What are some characters - real or fictional - who are known by their moniker with THE in it? Ideally two words. Including the THE.
I'm 30 years old and I just saw Casablanca for the first time. All of a sudden I understand why so many people joke about "always having Paris." And all of those references to gin joints. Can you recommend some other movies to me that are equally important for understanding American pop culture? [more inside]
I'm looking for examples of visual timelines in movies, video games, or fiction. Scenes where a span of time is represented metaphorically, preferably as a physical object, diagram, or action. A good example is this scene from Me and You and Everyone We Know in which two characters use a street as a visual metaphor for their potential relationship. [more inside]
What is the story behind the pop-cultural trope of the "Japanese Houseboy?" [more inside]
Help me make a list of assistants/valets/right-hand people in pop culture. [more inside]
I'm a child of the '80s, and I loved the '80s. However, I didn't develop a sense of good taste until about 1994, and as a result my pop-culture radar is completely jammed with crappy cartoons designed to sell toys, cereal commercials, and Ewoks. Can you recommend totally awesome movies/TV shows/etc. that will satisfy my '80s nostalgia, but are good enough to watch today? [more inside]
Why are there so few living and loving mothers in Disney films? [more inside]
Oceans Twelve. Am I an idiot or does this movie not make a lick of sense (spoilers inside--DON'T READ if you haven't seen the flick). [more inside]
