I've noticed that the NYPD has a habit of doing perp-walks with the suspect in a Tyvek suit. Why? [more inside]

Some more 30s New York questions: Would a police detectve in 1930s New York be a uniformed or a nonuniformed role? In the 30s would there be such a thing as plainsclothes police outside of the feds? Are there any years in the 30s in which the New York summer was particularly hot? And, just to be totally random, what popular newspapers in New York in the 30s would have been giving favourable coverage to Hitler, and when would he have started being front page news?
We were recently in NYC on vacation. We were staying in the Battery Park area and on two separate occasions, witnessed long lines of police cars with their lights flashing, occasionally "beeping" their sirens. They almost seemed to be in parade formation, traveling on the West Side highway, going quickly. Does anyone know what we were seeing? [more inside]
About a month ago I happened to be outside my house in Queens at about midnight. I saw what looked like a cop car with license plate reading cameras drive by. Anyone have more info? [more inside]
When I was in NYC, I saw quite a spectacle of dozens (maybe up to 50?) of police going down 42nd St in a motorcade/caravan of sorts. A friend of mine said it was so they could quickly move though traffic to get from point A to point B. He said it was "operation something or another". (I am sure it was quite a show of policing prowess and tourists from Virginia can think they are safe.) Can someone please tell me what exactly it is called? The word is on the tip of my tongue and something like operation dazzle. Supposedly it is something rather common.
