Shop open in Krakow past 6pm where I can buy chargers

I just arrived in Krakow from Australia. My luggage did not. Insurance will cover replacement of everything if it hasn't turned up after 8 hours, which will be 5pm. I desperately need clean clothes, a laptop charger (Acer) and a phone charger before tomorrow as I am teaching a workshop. Have located places for clothes open until 10pm. What about the chargers? I am in the Old Town. [more inside]

What to do for a free afternoon in Krakow?

Thanks to MetaFilter, I am going on a Holocaust trip, sans my beloved husband, to Poland and Israel. We leave soon. It's a group trip, but we'll have two independent evenings (Saturday and Sunday) and a free afternoon (Monday) in Krakow, where the group is staying at the Sheraton. Suggestions, hive mind? I'm fine with eating etc. on my own, just need some suggestions on where.

Researching family UK WWII history

I've been looking into certain aspects of my family history and I'd like to learn more about one particular person, who I'm told left Poland in about 1941, after members of his family were sent to Theresienstadt, and went on to serve in the British army as a cryptographer. [more inside]

Looking for 17th Century Polish poetry books

Asking for my husband - he recently met a man who when younger had a love for 17th century Polish poetry. He wasn't clear if there was one specific poet, or just poetry from that era. My husband would love to buy him a book of such poems (in Polish) as a gift. But since neither of us knows Polish, Googling isn't helping much. It could be a new or old edition, anthologies are fine. Must be able to ship to the US. Thanks in advance!

What are the oldest art collections depicting life in Poland?

I'm looking specifically for paintings/art that depict what daily life was like for non-royal people in Poland. It's easy to find lot's of art depicting royalty but I'm looking for the oldest paintings that captured what the houses and villages and people looked like outside of the castles and royal families. Recommendations for Budapest -> Krakow -> Berlin itinerary in early July

Doctor Girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Central Europe in a couple weeks, flying into Budapest and then making our way over the course of 10-11 days to Berlin to meet friends. We're planning on spending most of that time in Slovakia and Poland. Our only definite stops are Budapest, Krakow, and Berlin, and we definitely want to do some hiking in the Tatras somewhere in there. But aside from that, we don't have firm plans. Anyone been in that area, and have some recommendations on awesome places to see/stay/eat/drink/listen to music? We tend to like stuff that's not super tourist-trap-y or packaged. [more inside]

What does this awesome 105-year-old Armenian-language Austro-Hungarian postcard say?

I just bought a postcard written in what looks like Armenian sent from what is now Lviv to what is now Chernivtsi (in what is now Ukraine), sometime between 1905 and (I'm guessing from the stamp) the end of the First World War/Austrian rule of Galicia. What does it say? [more inside]

Cheap flight options to Poland in September?

Does anyone have advice on getting cheap flights to Poland (preferably into Lodz or Warsaw) for early September? I've tried the sites I normally use for flights, like Cheaptickets, Vayama, etc., but the lowest I can find is $900. I've also looked into becoming a courier, but it seems those options are greatly limited, if not impossible. I would be traveling alone and would probably stay around two weeks. I've traveled, lived, and studied abroad extensively, so more complicated options are definitely viable. This is for a wedding of a good friend of mine, and I'd really like to make it out there!
