Long term bad news

I've seen lots of discussion over the years about how we send clear messages across time, for example nuclear waste sites and how we warn 50 generations down the road. This is a corrollary, what substances are the most dangerous over the long term? I assume it's some form of radioactive material , but which is the worst for the longest?

Help! Podcast about British guy deceived by "Claire"??

Hi MeFi! I can't remember where I heard a podcast about a British guy who ends up in NYC, meets "Claire" on a dating site (I think?), and then proceeds to have a beautiful intellectual relationship with her only to have her start getting horribly sick. Turns out it's a giant hoax she is playing on him just for fun... any ideas?! Thanks!

What could kill a shrub/bush in one day?

I have some bushes if front of my house that were planted almost 3 years ago. When I came home from work tonight the one closest to my driveway was completely dead. All the other bushes of the same kind are in good health, but the leaves on this one are mostly gone, the ones that remain are dark brown. It was fine this morning. [more inside]

ANTS low-key everywhere

My apartment has ants. Not in a major, stream-of-ants visible way (although that DEFINITELY happens when it's very dry--and I live in California), just little exploratory black ants. I see them at a rate of maybe 6-8 per day and there's no clearly evident reason for them to be around (for example, a line of them tromped happily along a freshly-bleached bathroom floor). They love or ignore the poison I've given them. My roommate puts boric acid everywhere and they really don't seem to care. What should I do? [more inside]

Can I nom it?

I moved into a great new place yesterday, with a garden. I have hit the Holy Grail of Paris-area apartments. However. Garden has plants from previous tenant. I have cats. Cats will nom the plants. I'm unfamiliar with a few of the plants, and am particularly worried about curious noms of this one. MeFi, can my cats eat these? Or should I remove them? [more inside]

Lead paint dust

I think workers employed by my landlord sanded away about a square foot of paint in my bathroom (in a building erected in the 1930s). There is a layer of fine dust in my medicine cabinet and on a few other surfaces (presumably those they didn't wipe down afterward). I'm concerned about lead poisoning; what steps should I take to avoid exposure? [more inside]

Rats avoiding poison and traps; what now?

I've got rats in my walls. They are avoiding both the poison bait (two types) and the traps that I set in the crawlspace. What do I do now? Getting a cat is not an option. I have a terrier, but the rats don't seem to come out during the day, so he never catches them. [more inside]

My dog eats seaweed. Is that safe for her to eat?

We have a three year old black Lab mix, and we take her to a local beach to run. Occasionally, there are piles of wet seaweed on down by the tide lines, and she will eat it. It is difficult to stop her from a distance, and invariably, later in the day, she will puke it up. Is this my only concern here, (cleaning up the puke) or is this dangerous for her? She loves the beach so much, it would be a shame to deny her this.

What are these bugs and how do I kill them?

My hot pepper plant has gross little bugs on the undersides of some of its leaves since I brought it indoors for the winter last week. Pic 1, Pic 2. I also have little fruit flies (or gnats?) that I would like to kill that live in my aloe, mint, and sage. That funnel trick everyone recommends killed some but not nearly all. What can I spray on the plant and soil to get rid of the bugs and larvae without poisoning myself (when I eat the peppers/herbs) or the plants?

I might have eaten a caterpillar; will I die?

So I found a translucent green worm thing in some salad I was eating: image. The salad leaves are from a friend's garden, so it's entirely possible that I didn't manage to get the worm off when washing the leaves. I'm kind of worried that I might have eaten one or more of its family members without noticing. So: 1) Can I get an ID of the thing? I think the immature form one of those ubiquitous green caterpillars, based on this ask. 2) Do I need to drink ipecac/see a doctor? If so, how urgently?

How worried should I be if my puppy ate part of leaf sprayed by RoundUp?

I have a 5 month old lab mix, about 22 lbs. Yesterday I sprayed some weed on our porch with RoundUp, and my SO went through and weedeated afterward, but failed to sweep remanents of weeds that were scattered out all crime scene like. This morning took puppy out for walk and he IMMEDIATELY grabs something off the porch and eats it. All of the pieces scattered were probably smaller than a thumb print, but he swallowed it before I could get to him. [more inside]

Poison Ivy

So I picked up some poison ivy camping the last week and didn't notice it for a couple of days. Pretty sure it was on one of my sweatshirts and gloves. It has only sprouted up on my wrist, which popped up on Tuesday. Do you think my sleeping bag is contaminated? If so what would be the best step for cleaning it? Dry cleaning? What about other clothing, best way to clean it? There are a lot of things on the net but I'd like to hear about real people's experience dealing with it.

Small Mystery Critter in Our House...Help!

We have an unknown critter nibbling the fruit and tomatoes on a counter INSIDE our house (in Miami, Fl). It's hungry enough to eat most of the bait on a mouse trap (say, leaving only the skin on a small slice of pear, as it seems to like fruit), strong enough to somehow move what's left of the bait about 1.5 inches away from the trap, but agile/light enough to not be caught by the trap.
