What does this mean? "If only centuries delayed, / I'd count them on my hand, / Subtracting till my fingers dropped / Into Van Diemen’s land." From Emily Dickinson. Apparently Van Deimen's land = Tasmania, once a penal colony... but if your fingers dropped from fatigue, why would they drop there? [more inside]
