Looking for audio cart software for Ubuntu.

Looking for audio cart software for Ubuntu. Bonus points if it imitates Jazler Show! 1.5.1. Some friends and I have been doing a podcast now for a few years, and have been using the usual Windows-compatible freeware for production--Audacity for recording and mixing, and Jazler Show's freeware edition (1.5.1, found here, second from the bottom) for an audio cart.

Our executive producer has had a computer failure and is not in a position to replace it right now, so he's switched to another, older computer. He's installed the latest Ubuntu distro on it, and is overall very pleased...except that Jazler Show isn't compatible with it. He even tried running Jazler Show using an emulator and has had no luck.

We've hunted around to find a suitable replacement software but so far have come up empty. Our producer has been making do with dropping our promos into the show after we record, but really it's a lot easier to have an audio cart to drop in bumpers, promos, etc. as we record.

Can anyone recommend some freeware or inexpensive audio cart software for Linux?

Thanks in advance!

Recomendations for class podcasts

Looking for recommendations of learning podcasts similar to "Physics for future presidents" I just finished listening to the podcasts of the class "Physics for Future Presidents" taught by Richard Muller at UC Berkley and it left me thirsty for more knowledge. For those not familiar with it, the class explains many physics concepts in a way that non-physics students can understand, including many of their day to day applications. I graduated with a biology degree more than 10 years ago and would like to broaden my knowledge of various fields for personal enrichment. The podcast format works great for me because I can listen to them while at work in the lab. Does anyone know of any other podcasts that would give you an overview/refresher of a field like chemistry, psychology, ecology, etc? I would like to be able to have intelligent conversations about other things besides genetics and photography.

Podcast sweet nothings into my ear

PodcastFilter: Looking for podcasts hosted by men with pleasing/interesting voices. I only recently discovered talk radio a few years ago. While scanning stations I ran into Matt Dahl (son of Steve Dahl) hosting a short show on an all-talk station residing in FM.

Something about his voice was very appealing to me. It has interesting little nuances and maybe a slight accent that I find personable and even relaxing.

The talk radio station died and Matt Dahl began podcasting so I picked up his show and after his updates slowed down I began my search for new voices.

I've been listening to AskMefi recommended podcasts the past few weeks.
These are voices that I also like:
Leo Laporte - he does that Tech one. His voice is almost too "perfect" and almost lacking character but his tone is super soothing to me. And he does accents really we'll.
Peter Sagal - he does Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. He has a lot of nuances and is somewhat different. Im not too fond of how announcer-y/game show host-y he goes though.

Voices I don't like:
Ira Glass-nothing special or soothing about his voice.
Carl Kasell- he helps out in WWDTM. His voice is interesting, but not appealing.

Any recommendations? Content isn't a huge issue... the Matt Dahl show is usually just about his life... and while I do love This American Life's content, I'm just just looking for voices.

How do I do right by a giant, evil media corporation

How can I go about contacting CBS to ask for permission to post clips from 1970s talkshows on Youtube/Podcasts? I'm involved in promoting a book whose author is long dead, but he was interviewed by Donahue and Oprah in 1979 about his research. (it involves human sexual response and the differences between sexual and interpersonal relationships).

I've done extensive google-fu and can't find an office or a number or an email of anybody to ask.

We have the tapes all ready to go up onto the Tubes, but don't want to get into any legal trouble / promise customers content that we can't actually provide. Both the Donahue and Oprah interviews are about half an hour long, and were part of regular broadcasts.

The proceeds of all the book sales will go to charity, so it's not like anybody will be making money off it.

Though Oprah has her own media empire now, the show she had in the 1970s was "People are Talking" and not "The Oprah Winfrey Show" so I think CBS has the rights and not Oprah.

Looking for Benjamen Walker's Your Radio Nightlight archive. Long ago, like in 2006 or something, the entire archive of Your Radio Nightlight was available to download at toeradio.org. That website no longer exists and as far as I can search, the archive doesn't either.
Seems like this should exist somewhere though and I am just lacking the intrepid search abilities required to find it.
is there a "sound opinions" -like podcast for classical music? I'm deeply interested in classical music and would like to explore beyond the 200-or-so youtube favorites I keep going back to but I lack a great guide.

I like sound opinions for their explanations and album dissertations and wonder if there is anything like that for the classical music realm that's actually worth exploring. what I have in mind is something that would tell me which version of a piece to listen to and an explanation for why it is superior to another or something along those lines.

I did see this.

Seeking guided relaxation / meditation cd's / podcasts. I've been suffering from anxiety and insomnia lately, and want to get back to normal. The cd's I've tried so far are The Mental Medicine Collection (Sacred Moment and Sleep Ease, both with Pakvilai Sudhaswin), The Calming Collection (Sleep Solutions, with Roberta Shapiro), and Living Meditation (with David Harshada Wagner).
The ones intended specifically for sleep seem best so far. I do not want any religious-specific cd's.

Calling all planners, public admin. types, adult education gurus and other smarty pants: I need to develop a training program or at least a strategy for developing a training program for further planning on the local level, put the hard parts. Our office is charged with further the planning efforts of local (state and county) governments. We laid out the elements needed to successfully developing and implementing a comprehensive plan and then audited it to analyze our gaps. Then we looked at other agencies and they have similar gaps.

How can we train people in the areas of administrative capacity and what we are generally calling "community will" (political will, advocacy, etc.)?

Like, how to read a site plan submitted by developers, how should staff and appointed/elected officals communicate effectively, can a circuit rider type planner work, how would you develop a program like that, how do you do code enforcement with out a dedicated staff member. For the last one, its things like making politically difficult decsions, gaining consensus, or just plain how to implement your plan (what ever that may mean).

I know I am putting a lot of info out there, I don't want to box in the answers here. So have you attended or created training on items similar to these? Are you aware of awesome (perferably free) web based training/podcasts that touch on these issues. Feel free to throw in any new ideas that you see staff or officials messing up all the time. Thank you!

How can I most effectively use an MP3 player to study math for the GRE?

How can I use an MP3 player to study math for the GRE? Can I use podcasts and other audio tools to prepare for the math portion of the GRE? For 8 hours every day, I am physically occupied but can use an MP3 player. I plan to do written problems during the other parts of the day, but are there podcasts or audio tools that would help make use of this listening time and get my skills up to speed? Is there anything else you'd suggest?

I am looking for tools that will increase math skills and ideally provide a refresher of high school math in order to prepare for the GRE. More generalized math podcasts are all right, too, or something along the lines of Berkeley's online lectures.

Assume that I can't use my hands or look at a book.

(This question is similar to the one requesting assistance in studying for the vocabulary portion of the GRE: How can one study for the GRE during their commute?)

Weekly News Podcasts

"Week in review" news podcasts? I am a busy student and find that I sometimes have a hard time staying on top of current events. While I do spend a few minutes each day reading NY Times headlines on Twitter, I find that radio is the best way for me to digest news.

I'm looking for the podcast equivalent to the NYT Week In Review page. I currently listen to the 7AM ET News Summary podcast but would like to listen to a slightly more detailed show that comes out every 4-7 days and is in the 20-45 minute range.

I just realized that Weekend Edition is available in podcast form, so I'll check that out. But if I recall correctly, it's a little bit more featury and slightly lighter. Ideally, I'd like something that's more news updates than features [On preview: maybe Weekend Edition Saturday is more what I'm looking for. Still, any other suggestions would be great].

I live in the US but am not opposed to a global news update program. I don't need sports updates of any kind.

[I was inspired to ask this question by this thread, which is great, but I'm not looking for an irreverant show].

Irreverent and informative news podcast

Looking for the news equivalent of the "Football Weekly" podcast. Is there an audio podcast which does for current affairs what Football Weekly does for football?

If you listen to Football Weekly I hope you'll know what I mean. If you don't the main requirements are that it discusses the news in a fairly irreverent way, but is well informed. Covers all the main stories, and the hosts are allowed opinions of their own. It isn't a "comedy" podcast as such, but the personalities of the presenters will mean it does raise a smile. If it had a political bias in any direction, that would be fine. It would be great if it was UK-centric, but world news would be ok (US-centric would not). Ideally it would last about an hour twice a week.

What I'm not after (if it helps): The News Quiz, Have I Got News For You, The Daily Show.

Japanese language podcasts for native speakers?

Where can I find Japanese podcasts? For Japanese people, not people who are learning Japanese. I'd love to find some Japanese podcasts for my (Japanese) wife to listen to here in England. My Japanese internet skillz are limited, and I'd like to load up a few onto her iPod before I give it to her as a present. I am absolutely not looking for teach-yourself-japanese podcasts, but for podcasts that Japanese people might listen to for education and amusement, news, politics, music, comedy, arts etc etc

Your recommendations please. I can see a few on iTunes, but I have no idea what is good or bad... She really loves manzai-style comedy, jazz, and if there is anything you know of with Japanese people talking about living abroad, that'd be awesome. Thanks in advance, metafilterians.

Broaden my podcast horizons in twenty minutes or less.

Another recommend-me-new-podcasts question but with a small twist: I'm specifically looking for podcasts which are 20 minutes duration or less. Subject matter is wide open, it's just difficult to search by length. Shorter podcasts I already love include: Afternoon Tea with Richard Wiseman, Skeptoid, SGU 5x5, Vital Signs, and SciAm's 60-Second Science. As you can see I'm heavy on the skeptics and science but I'd like to widen my horizons. So please don't feel limited to this area, diversity is good. The only things I won't listen to is politics and religion, everything (and anything!) else is fair game.

Links are good, names I can google to find links myself are also good. Podcasts longer than twenty minutes, while being good in their own way, aren't what I'm looking for right now (the odd minute or two over here and there is fine). I promise to download and listen to at least one episode of everything mentioned as long as it's short enough.

Oh. And I listen while I walk to work so I'm talking about audio podcasts here rather than video ones. Cheers!

How can one study for the GRE during their commute?

A friend is doing a last minute cram for the GRE but is lacking in time. The bulk of her available time is in her 2-hour-per-day commute. Are there any _good_ podcasts she could listen to, specificall for vocabulary? Or .. should she look into hiring someone to call her and drill her for those two hours? If so... how? She's looked at podcasts on itunes and there is very little good content (and what's there appears to have been abandoned). The idea of hiring someone to do live call-and-drill for one or both hours of commute each day is something I thought of, but I wouldn't even know how to begin hiring someone for this.

Complication: GRE is in mid November, whatever action is to be taken needs to be taken now.

I Can Has High Holy Day Podcast?

Can anyone recommend a good Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur podcast? I'm hoping to prepare for the high holidays this year by listening to some good podcasts. I'm looking for podcasts about getting ready for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, about the spiritual background of the holidays, or general meditations that might help make the holidays more meaningful for me this year.

Any recommendations for good podcasts?

I love listening to people from Northern England

Looking for podcasts or radio shows with women talking in Mancunian accents or similar Northern English accents. I love Manchester accents and want to listen to more of them. I used to watch 'Frasier' only to hear Jane Leeves speak, and also loved the accent used by the character Betty Slocombe in 'Are You Being Served'.

Podcasts, audiobooks, or any other aural media I can take with me and listen to are wanted. Thanks a bunch.

Podcasts by the Pool

Recommend me some good history podcasts! I've got a week's holiday in Fiji and I plan to spend much of it sitting by a pool, drinking drinks with umbrellas in them and listening to audio history. I'm a massive fan of Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast and I'm after anything of similar quality. 20th Century military history would be my preferred topic, but it the podcast is as good as the History of Rome, I'd listen to the history of cardboard boxes.

Help save me time in Garageband

Is it possible to have GarageBand ('09) play faster when editing without impacting the output? I use Garageband to create enhanced versions of my podcasts, which is a feature my listeners have told me they love, but boy is it time consuming!

When editing my podcasts in Audacity I usually listen at about 1.6x saving me a lot of time.

In Garageband all I have to do is listen to the shows for certain things to be said and then insert an image or chapter point. I was wondering if there was a feature in Garageband that would let me listen to the track on "fast forward" like 1.5x etc. but only for the "preview", when I export the track I don't want to sound like hyper chipmunks. And speeding up the track then slowing it back down won't work because I'd then lose all the time markers for chapters I'd worked so hard to make.

Can this be done? Browsing through the documentation, etc. has not netted me any gains, but it's perhaps the least useful documentation I've ever seen.

Thanks Mefites!

Help me find the perfect rss reader for my HTC Ozone. I'm looking for an app, not a web based aggregator. I'm looking for a well designed interface. The ability to play podcasts within the app. The ability to view full articles within the app. And if it could play videos within the app as well then that would be swell.

Viigo would be perfect except it doesn't allow you to save to a storage card, defeating the entire purpose.

Should I buy a suspension mount for my Blue Snowball microphone?

I'm about to start recording an audiobook / podcast. I've settled on Blue's Snowball microphone, and thanks to previous questions here I know that a pop filter is vital. Should I also buy the Snowball's suspension mount? I'll be recording with the microphone on my desk or possibly my kitchen table. On my desk is an external hard drive, which I'll of course be unplugging during recording, though I should point out that my desk backs up to an exterior wall. I'll also be the only speaker on the recording, if that matters.

It's not terribly expensive and there are bundles available, so I don't mind spending the extra money if it'll improve the quality of my recording. Will it?

Good gay podcasts

Many of the gay podcasts out there seem to just be two guys chatting. Does anyone know of a podcast that gives an overview or a history of the gay rights movement, or even is just gay and entertaining generally? Also auditory stuff that isn't a podcast but is iPoddable would also be fine (i.e. a good audiobook).

How to make the Mac play nice with my Sansa?

How to sync Macbook with a non-iPod MP3 player? I have a Sansa e250, and I love it. I also love my new Mac. However, I've been having a small issue with syncing music onto the Sansa.

On my old Windows machine, I used to have a Sansa folder on my hard drive and then would just sync both folders each week using a program called Allway Sync, which removed listened to MP3's and added on the new stuff I'd downloaded that week.

With the Mac, I can't find a similar program, possibly due to the dominance of iTunes.

So, Hive Mind, is there a program or method I can use to get this functionality on my Mac?

Help me find good quality sound recording equipment (radio-ish), on a budget. I'm a high schooler with no school tech programs or savvy teachers to turn to for advice and suggestions. Right now I'm trying to produce a radio story/podcast thing documenting the stories of illegal, undocumented students at my school and community, to eventually air on college campus radio stations and the like. We're trying to advocate a new act that was introduced to Congress, the DREAM/Student Adjustment Act, that would help a lot of people I know go to college.

Anyway, I have your traditional cassette-tape recorders but I don't think its of a high enough quality to air on radio. I need portable equipment to do street interviews, and to eventually upload to the computer to edit and the like.

As this is an unofficial school effort (the administration would frown if they knew), the only funds I have available are really my own. So I'm looking for a)portable digital recording equipment b)a user-friendly editing program c) general advice on radio/podcast production.

trimming podcasts in quicktime

I have a podcast (M4A format) that I'd like to trim and save without re-encoding. Is this possible? In Quicktime Pro I can select a time range, trim it, and choose save, but it saves the resulting file as a .MOV file. Basically I want to grab a chapter of the podcast and have it as a regular audio file. Eventually this will be done in AppleScript.

Is the .MOV simply a wrapper? It looks as though I can change the file extension to M4A and it loads fine. Do I have to manually change the extension each time? What podcast info has to be removed for iTunes to load it as a regular file and not load it into the podcast section?
