Its Alive! Its Alive? (Uses for sad lonely PDA's of yore)

What are some useful or cool apps for the sad lonely PDA's sitting at the bottom of my junk drawer to turn it into a interesting desktop display (ala chumby) I have a handful (5) of older PDAs (Palms, Windows Mobiles), most of them are fairly fast (300mhz and faster) some of them have built in WIFI and or bluetooth. With all the cool technology packed into the devices, it seems it would make a cool desktop eye candy, RSS feeds, twitter, clock, digital picture frame, email notifications (everything that chumby can do). The only one I found was permaclock, which is a picture rotator with alarm clock functionality. Are there other such cool apps such as this? What are you using your old PDAs for?

MHTML blues

I have a huge collection of MHT files and would like to view them on my Windows Mobile or Palm device. I save web pages like a madman. I have about 2000 wikipedia pages, and about 1500 other pages. I use the most recent version of Opera (windows) and use it to save as MHT (single file). It is much more convenient than saving as HTML + folders and images.

However, I'd like to read them on more than my laptop. I have a Windows Mobile 6 smartphone and a Palm T3 PDA. I am an avid Isilo/IsiloX user, but it seems they will never support conversion from MHT.

I have tried a MHT --> HTML conversion program, but it was slow, buggy, and would crash a lot. Definitely not good for the volume I have. A good conversion program would let me convert the resulting files to IsiloX's .pdb file format, which is readable on both devices. That would make me happy.

I have tried browsers on the Windows Mobile device. Neither pocket IE, Opera mini, or Netfront 3.5 will properly open and render a MHT file. I had seen different posters on message boards claiming that netfront 3.5 would open MHT, i tried and got "unable to open page".

My only success with MHT on the PPC device is by using a freeware app called Qusnetsoft MHT Viewer, which will open the MHT file in temp memory, then open it with the default browser. This works pretty good, but the conversion process takes a while, and the rendering is about 85% true. I'd really like something that did this natively and quicker.

Does anybody have a solution for me?

Cheap device for song lyric display?

I'm looking to use some kind of tablet device, pocket pc, or possibly even e-book reader to display lyrics and chords for me while playing guitar. Criteria: cheap, readable, hackable, in that order. Budget - cheaper is better, $100 is ok, for $200 it should be stellar.

It needs to be able to display text files, and that's about it. It would be great if the screen was big enough to display a whole page, but I usually condense lyrics and chords, so it's not essential.

It would also be great if I could hook up some kind of device to scroll up and down and change songs. Could be a keyboard input, whatever.

I figure that you hardware hacker types must know something about discontinued devices that can be had on eBay. Thanks!

Help me find this flashcard program?

About a year ago, I installed a freeware program onto my Dell Axim to aid with learning. Since then, the program has been removed and I've forgotten what it was called. I'm hoping someone out there can help me. The program was for learning languages and memorization. I remember that data to be memorized was added to the program in pairs (i.e. "Ottawa" and "Canada"). The program would display one of the two strings (Ottawa) and then show a prompt to be clicked after the user had tried to remember what the matching string was. Clicking the prompt would display the matching string (Canada). If I recall correctly, several options were displayed where the user could enter how well the text had been recalled ("I remembered it immediately", "It took a bit of thought", "I was completely wrong", ...). The program would keep track of which were memorized less correctly and show those more frequently.

If anyone can help me find this again, I'd really appreciate it.

PocketPC Security Software

Looking for Windows Mobile 6 security software for a phone running Windows Mobile Professional. Especially looking for something that will auto-encrypt or auto-delete PIM databases after a number of incorrect password attempts. I'm looking for software that will lock the screen and buttons when the PDA is turned on, and require a password, either an on-screen PIN or button entry - I don't want to have to get my stylus out to check my email.

I would also like a poison pill where the system would hard reset after a number of password failures, or failing that at the very least it would autodelete the internal memory and PIM data. It would also be great if such a program had an OEM install version so I could put it directly on the firmware of my PDA when flashing a new ROM, but that's more wishful thinking than an actual requirment.

I would be willing to pay for this software, but cheaper is better and free is best.

What Was That PocketPC Software?

Help me track down a piece of Windows Mobile calculator software, the name of which my memory has totally failed to retain... A while ago, while looking at a friends Windows Mobile Pocket PC, I was very taken by a piece of mathematics / calculator software that he had installed. Now I have my new HTC Touch Cruise, I'd love to have this software for myself, but no matter how hard I try, or how arcanely I google, I can't find it!

It was, as I've said, a calculator. One of the things that really set it apart from others was that each equation or calculation you entered was stored back going back further up the screen, in such a way that you could: a) reference the answer from a previous calculation in your current one, and b) "run" through the calculations again from any point back up the stack to the end.

I also remember that there was a very fiddly little click in the right hand corner of each equation where you could turn on graphing for that equation (and a little graph icon with the colour of the plot would appear in that corner once it was on).

You could write scripts using this, and load and run them, enter equations in RPN or standard notation, etc. etc...

Does this ring bells with anyone? It's not MathU (Pro), PDACalc, HiCalc or MxCalc... So, what was it?

Can you help me decide between (used) PDA's, Smartphones, Pocket PCs and the year 2008?

Can you help me decide between PDA's, Smartphones, Pocket PCs and the year 2008? I am looking most specifically for info on the Sony Clie PEG NX70V ... IPAQ 4350 ... and IPAQ 2215. But advice on any of this would be immensely helpful! I did search AskMeFi, but found only info for new equipment or old posts. I'm talking used equipment instead, older but able to keep up with current software stuff. (More inside) I'm interviewing for work as a personal assistant, something I did for years, but haven't done in years. A couple of interviewers suggested (strongly) that I might find a PDA useful, so I responded to a few online community for sale ads; I was most impressed by the IPAQ's 4350 and 2215, that were $175 and $90 used. On the phone, on the way home, I found out that my husband has a pda in the house, older and barely used. It's a Sony Clie PEG NX70V.

Now here's my questions, as I did not know that we already had one. I need to compare it to those. I've pulled it out and it's working fine. The question is, is it outdated? Or is it fully sufficient for my needs? If any of you know anything about them both, better than what I've been able to figure out online, that would be cool.

This Clie has a swivel tablet top, which is useful and cool, and I haven't been able to figure out whether the IPAQ's do. I liked the IPAQ because it seemed to offer more of what a small PC would ... but now I see that there is tons of freeware available for the palm, and that the clie is a palm; plus, in the reviews raving about the IPAQ's, it was said that their keyboards were "almost as good as" the Clie's. Hmmm.

The IPAQ uses a standard SD card -- I can't tell the max size, but this is the year 2008, where apps and media eat up memory ...and this Clie accepts only a memory stick, and only up to 128mb. Are they even available anymore? Is that enough for my needs?

My needs are a todo list and appointment calendar, as close to GTD style as I can make them; MSword or equivalent, and a way of viewing docs and pdfs and, hopefully, web pages. I don't mind syncing them from my laptop and transferring them, but I can't figure out how well either the IPAQ or the CLIE do these things.

With a laptop and car inverter, I've never even bothered to use the browser on my cell phone, I've just opened my laptop whereever I am and found a connection that way. But now, for these jobs, it is apparently better for me to use something handheld, like a PDA ... so I'm not really sure of what the action is for getting webstuff, nor of the cost of doing so ... my wireless laptop doesn't cost me anything to do this ... will the PDA or the Pocket PC cost me to use the WIFI cards?

The Clie comes with a video/still camera and mp3 player ... am I silly for thinking, well I already have portable hardware for those things ... I figure I can save on the PDA battery and memory by NOT using it for those, but that means that I'd be carrying three items with me instead of one.

For that matter, am I silly for not going ahead and buying a smartphone? As I understand it, that would mean carrying one thing instead of four things -- but again, I am HUNTING for a job, and since I already own a laptop, LG CU500 cell phone, 1GB mp3 player, SmallWonder video camera (which records 5 hours at a stretch!) and, now, this Clie PDA ...well even though the IPAQ pda's are "only" $90 and $175 respectively, and a smartphone would likely be around $250 ... I could save all of that money by using what I've got and not buying anything till AFTER I've had the paying job for a while. These items are all old execpt for the Small wonder, but that was only $100 -- $120 with the 2GB SD card, and let's face it, that's an amazing price for a 3x5 inch video camera that lets you record 5 hours at a a stretch -- I'm an amateur journalist in my off-time, so I felt that was a great investment.

Well! While I digressed there, I guess I answered my own question as to whether I should get one now ... common sense tells me "no" unless there is something glaringly wrong with the Sony Clie PEG NX70v or it's 128gb memory stick is something to laugh about ... but if any of you could compare IPAQ's pocket pc's to it, or know of other specifics, or could even point me to some good software for it -- productivity apps, logic type games (backgammon or word game or puzzle game stuff) and writer's apps ... that would be cool. And nice of you. Thank you for reading through all of this as I ramble. I've been up hours in those interviews and now in a quick search for comparison info and these billion questions are the ones that are still dancing round my brain.

Thanks for any insight.
My phone keeps turning off!

My brand new Sprint Mogul Pocket PC will restart itself, but only when I'm walking with the phone in my pocket. Why? So I just bought a new Sprint Mogul (PPC 6800, the HTC Titan) on Wednesday, and I've been really happy with it except for one thing. When I go to walk my dog, the phone will soft-restart itself probably 2 times during the 20 minutes or so that I'm out--I can tell because it makes a start up noise, and when I pull the phone out of my pocket, it has the Windows Mobile logo on it, which appears when the phone restarts. I can have it sitting on my desk all day and this won't happen, but in that 20 minutes it will do it twice.

Pertinent information:
- This is a soft reset, which as far as I know is accomplished by using the stylus to hit a tiny button on the bottom.
- The device works perfectly otherwise.
- No programs are running when this occurs, according to the Memory screen.
- The pants I've been wearing do have rather large pockets, so the phone does move around a bit as I walk. My old Treo 650 never had this problem, however.

My theories:
- Perhaps I'm somehow hitting a button combination that causes a soft reset? I find this hard to believe because the only button that is active when the backlight is off is the power button, and it's in such a location that I probably wouldn't accidentally hit it.
- Could it have something to do with going in and out of a coverage area? Coverage is spotty near my house.
- My primary theory is that it somehow involves the battery getting bumped around and momentarily losing contact with the device.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can anyone suggest a reliable rss client/reader for a Windows Mobile 5 pocket PC running on a Softbank X01HT (a Japanesed HTC Hermes 200).
Please help me make my computer forget that I ever plugged my phone into it!

How can I uninstall a driver, and keep it uninstalled? I don't want Windows to keep installing it every time I plug my phone into the computer. I want it to be like the very first time I plugged it in -- when Windows had no idea what driver to install. I plugged in my Pocket PC (UT Starcom PP6700 running Windows Mobile 5) with a USB cable to my WinXP SP2 laptop. When it came time to find drivers, it didn't find any automatically. This was because I made the mistake of not having ActiveSync installed already. In fact, I completely forgot about ActiveSync until much later. Confused at that moment as to why this computer was not finding the drivers, I googled for the driver myself, downloaded it from some website, and installed it. The driver installed fine, but examining the device in Control Panel, I see that the computer says "cannot start the device - Code 10". Of course, ActiveSync, now installed, doesn't see the device.

I have tried many things to get this driver uninstalled, and to use the drivers that come with ActiveSync, and the tech support people at work have spent hours on it as well, but I cannot get the phone to sync over USB. I use IR now for that reason. I would like to be able to use USB though, so that it can charge the battery.

I believe that the problem lies in the fact that I can't get the old driver uninstalled. My phone works on every other computer I have plugged it into since then. Just not mine. Because, as soon as I plug it in, the "Add New Hardware" icon in the system tray appears, and it finds the original driver I installed and uses that.

I tried deleting the files from the System32\drivers directory, and the \i386\drivers, but when I plug the phone in again, the driver re-appears from somewhere. (rndismp.sys and rndismpx.sys). Where is the computer finding the files from? How do I get Windows to stop its automatic install of the drivers for my phone, and just stay on the first page of the Add New Hardware wizard? (Or better yet, to try and use the ActiveSync directory's drivers).

Other stuff that didn't work:
Uninstall the drivers in the control panel, and click 'scan for hardware changes' (just reinstalls the same drivers)
Click on "update drivers" in the properties and choose the ActiveSync drivers (says that the ones I have installed currently are the latest and best ones)
Removing the drivers while computer is in Safe Mode.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated, even if they might not make sense. I am just running low on different things I can try to get this to work. So whatever you can think of, please! Thank you for all your help.

Can I choose which Contacts in Outlook 2007 sync to my Pocket PC?

Outlook and Address Book question. Can I choose which Contacts in Outlook 2007 sync to my Pocket PC? Here is the setup:

- Outlook 2007 on a laptop running Windows XP SP2

- PocketPC smartphone running Windows Mobile 5

- In Outlook, I have a 60 contacts categorized as follows:
- 20 Personal
- 30 Office
- 10 Clients

Right now, every time my phone syncs up to the Exchange Server, it downloads every single contact listed in the Address Book. Is there a way I can pick and choose which contacts are downloaded to the phone and which aren't? I really only need the Personal and Clients, but not the Office, on the phone.

But, of course, I still want to be able to access all contacts when I'm in Outlook on the laptop.

I'm sure it has something to do with the 'global address book' and what not in Outlook, but I'm not sure. Pointers to a good tutorial are also more than welcome.

Any ideas?

Please help my ipaq talk to my PC

Can someone point me towards a version of ActiveSync that doesn't require XP service pack 2? For several reasons, we took the decision not to upgrade to XP service pack 2. It interfered with the network settings too much.

I'm trying to install ActiveSync for my Ipaq 1950 (which runs windows mobile 5), to exchange files only - not calendar or email - between my ipaq and pc. But the two versions of ActiveSync available from the microsoft website don't work.

ActiveSync 4.5 wont install. The error message says I'm lacking a DLL, but wont tell me which one so I can't fix the problem.

ActiveSync 4.1 (which is also the version that came on the setup disk with my ipaq) refuses to install because I am not running the "latest service packs".

Is there an older version of ActiveSync or equivalent software somewhere on the web that will let my ipaq talk to my pc without having to ruin our home network in the process?

Suggest software for a new Pocket PC!

I need software for my new PocketPC. What do you use?

I'm an experienced Pocket PC/Windows Mobile user. I have a new Sprint Mogul (to replace my PPC-6700), and I want to get some good software on there. 1. I'd like some kind of software that will check my Gmail for me automatically on a schedule. Does this exist?
2. Games. I want some. I like Bejewelled, but it's not free. Can you recommend good, free ones?
3. Utilities. I love 'em. Like a good PocketPC backup solution? Free? Tell me.
4. Has anyone seen a recent NES/SNES Emu for PPC? I have PocketNES, but it never worked quite right.
5. Window manager/app closer. I used to like one, but it's not good with the WM os's.

Finally, if there's any software I missed above, tell me. What do you love to use on your PocketPC?

What barebones PDA is right for me?

I want a barebones PDA. Please help me find the right one. Primarily, I'd like a device that would allow me to carry my Outlook calendar around with me. I'd also like to have the capability to have a shopping list on there - I've used SplashShopper with my former PDA, a Palm Zire 22.

I don't necessarily need color or grafitti capabilities on the device. A good (ie, loud, buzzing, pinching, poking) alarm for my calendar events would be great.

Also, something cheapish - under $75 would be great.

I really liked the Zire 22 and might go back to it, but it's on the high side of my budget. If an old Handspring or Palm IIIxe would do the trick for cheaper, I'll try one of those instead. I wonder if those would be sync-able with Outlook, and if I could get SplashShopper installed on them?

I'm also considering one of these cheap options, but the reviews are putting me off.

I did try integrating my calendar into my iPod, but that didn't work so great for me. Hard to read on the screen, cranky about synching, etc.

Thanks!

Content Management Systems (CMS) that play well with a PDA

I really like CMS systems such as Joomla and DotNetNuke that allow me to host information I want to access remotely (blog posts, news, serial numbers, etc...). However, since I have my PDA with me all the time and not my notebook, I would really like to use a CMS that I can access via my PDA. My screen size is 320x240 pixels. Most of the CMS systems I have ever seen don't translate well to a PDA screen. Are there any out there that do? I am looking for a system that I can host on my own servers. Thanks!

Do you know a JVM for PocketPC that will run GMail Mobile?

Do you know a JVM for PocketPC that will run GMail Mobile?

I very much want to run Gmail Mobile on my PocketPC, model PPC-6700.

It's a PocketPC with a built-in Sprint phone, and I already have the data plan for it all set up and working.

The problem is that my phone didn't come with a built-in JVM (Java Virtual Machine) solution. Google refers me to IBM, which wants me to pay for a PocketPC-compatible JVM that appears to still be in a beta gray area.

I've Googled around and found that there are in fact free JVMs for PocketPC, but when I tried one, it wanted a .JAR file to run, and wouldn't even recognize the .JAD file that Gmail Mobile is packaged in. I even tried renaming the .JAR to a .JAD, and that didn't work at all.

I would simply install the free ones, one-by-one to see if any work, but installing and uninstalling apps on a PocketPC is a pain in the ass, and uninstalling also leaves programmatic garbage from the ininstalled program in my PocketPC's precious memory.

I've also Googled around in some forums discussing the issue, but I've found no hard answers. There was a rumbling in one forum about being able to buy IBM's (or was it Java's?) JVM for PPC for only $6, but I haven't been able to find a purchase page for any such thing. I'm willing to pay $6 if it works.

And so, Hive Mind, the question is: Whither is my JVM that will for sure run Gmail Mobile? Do you know a free one that will work? Do you know where the infamous $6 deal is?

Bonus Question: Tabbed internet browsing for PocketPC. I found MiniMo (FireFox for PPC), and my model doesn't run it well. Is Opera tabbed? Any others?

Tracking donations due via PocketPC

I need to keep track/remind myself of a weekly contribution. Is there a (PocketPC?) program that will help me? I am donating a certain amount of money weekly for the rest of the year to a organization as part of a fundraiser. Because they are keeping track and announcing money raised throughout the year, I don't really want to donate all the money right now, or at the end of the year. I do not, however, need to donate weekly - monthly or so is great. My problem is that I tend to forget when I last donated, and then I have no idea how much I'm turning in. I would like a (free) program to help keep track of this.

---------------

My ideal solution:
Integrates with the calendar on my PocketPC. If I don't mark a donation paid for a certain week, it rolls over to next week, adding all unpaid dates. When I check my appointments for the day, I would see something like "Donation: X amount due".

OK Solutions:
A regular PocketPC program, a desktop based program, email based reminder service, or online program - in that order of preference.

---------------

Technically, I am donating the same amount per week. But they sometimes have months where people are encouraged to give more. Bonus points if I can "add" money to a week or month

Oh, this is a small organization, so ideas like automatic bank account withdrawals won't help. This is straight up cash.

Smartphones, Treos, and Cell Phone - Oh My!

After eyeing my boss' new Treo 700, I'm toying with the idea of getting one. I have a few questions about Fancy New SmartPhone Technology that I'm hoping the hive mind can help me with. 1) I currently have Verizon (still linked through my parents' Family Plan). I understand that if I were to buy a new phone on eBay or from another retailer, I will have to get one that's setup to work with Verizon, correct? My contract has another year or so, so I don't think it's worth paying a fee to get out of it for now.

2) Do I need a fancy, expensive data plan to do things like send email from the middle of the dessert or surf the Internet on the bus? Are some smartphones equipped with Wifi as well, for Internet browsing? Will I get charged by the minute or kilobyte for data sent to and from my phone?

3) These Treos, they come in PocketPC and Palm flavors? I have an iBook; which is more likely to work with my mac? (I know all about syncing Palms with Macs, thanks to AskMe).

4) If I decide to get a Treo, should I spring for the more expensive 700 model, or save a hundred bucks or so by getting a lightly used 650?

5) Is a Treo really the way to go, or should I be looking at other options as well? [This is mostly addressed in this AskMe already]

Of course, any other smartphone-related comments and/or anecdotes are appreciated.

[As always, I apologize if/that this has been asked before. Past questions don't address Verizon customers, and Verizon seems to be pickier about their phones. Maybe. I think.]

Local Wiki on Pocket PC?

Is there any Wiki-type software that will run on a Pocket PC? I have been using tiddlywiki everyday but have just bought a Pocket PC to serve as calendar etc but also as my notebook. Tiddlywiki doesn't work on Pocket Explorer, Minimo and only comes close on Opera Mobile.

There are plenty of applications available that use different systems for managing notes but I haven't found any that make it as quick and easy to create an network of ideas as tiddlywiki (or any other wiki) does.
Is there a solution out there that I'm missing? I don't want to have to be online to use it and running a small local webserver doesn't seem to be an option.

Any Web 2.0 Calendars Sync with Outlook or Pocket PC?

Are there any web based calendars/task management programs that will sync with Outlook or straight to my Pocket PC? I got Sunbird syncing but after using it a while I switched back to Outlook, but I really like the idea of using something like Google Calendar, Backpack or iCommit when I'm at work or at school. I’ve thought about an exchange server account somewhere, but all the places I looked seemed to be pretty pricy for a student budget. Any suggestions?

I'm looking for a PDA like this only without the cellphone capibilities, and for a similar price (better yet: lower price!). As always, there is I'm pretty stoked about that iPaq. The only thing is no cell providers in my area (least of all the one with my current contract) takes a sim card cell phone. Do'h! So, I figure that if I take the cell out of the equation, I should be able to get something of similar functionality for less cash (maybe $200 total or so). The biggies for me are running a version of window's moble that's .NET friendly (at least, I think this one can do that), SD slot, Infrared port, Bluetooth, WiFi, and handwriting recognition. Oh, and enough RAM to install a couple of programs wouldn't hurt. :) Bonus points if anyone can do all this for $180 after shipping! :D

Thanks, everyone!

Diet Tracking Software for Pocket PC

Need diet-tracking sofware for Pocket PC. I need to lower my cholesterol and lose weight. I'd like recommendations for diet-tracking software for my Dell Axim X50v Pocket PC. I need software that will let me set a calorie goal and target levels of various nutrients (for example, less than 200 mg cholesterol a day, more than 20 g fiber, etc.). The program should have a database with the nutritional components of lots of foods, and allow me to add my own foods.

I've tried Pocket Diet Tracker and it continually messed up my Axim. I could possibly use a Palm-only program under an emulator, but I'd rather not. I'd like to hear from anyone who regularly uses an easy-to-use diet tracker on a Pocket PC. Exercise tracking capability is a plus but not required.

Yet another calendar program question (syncing, sharing and NOT Outlook) I have a Pocket PC. At work we have a little handcrafted network appointment thing that the receptionists use to book appointments for the staff. I hate Outlook.
Best wifi PDA solution?

I realize that there have been variations on the "best PDA" theme before, but hopefully others will find this question (and it's answers) usefull: My wife wants a PDA for all the basic PIM functions, but also to occasionally browse the web via wifi (it's a lot easier to hold out of reach of our 1-year old son than her 20lb. Dell laptop). Do I have to plunk down $299 for a Palm Tx, or are there more affordable options? Do you have a favorite PDA (we're not wedded to any particular OS) that may not have built-in wifi, but can accept a wifi expansion card, perhaps coming out cheaper even with the xtra $$ for the wifi card? Obviously, a used one would be cheaper still - are there any 2003-4 models you would recommend for this purpose?

Windows Mobile 5 Software Woes.

My father and I just got Axim x51v PDAs, and we're both having some trouble finding software. For him, the main need is a mapping program to work with his GPS, and for me... well, I'd like to find some old school emulator gaming. The problem is this: I can find mapping software, like Microsoft Streets. And I can find emulators. I can't, however, find either of the above for Windows Mobile 5, which is the new OS on the x51 series. So my multi-part question is as follows:

1) Do y'all know of programs to fit what we're looking for?
2) Can you refer some good x51/Pocket PC sites so I can be better educated in the future? Some kind of review or news site, and whatever the PPC equivalent of VersionTracker is, would be great.

3) Slightly off topic but still related, anyone had experience using CF Type II memory with their Axim? I've read that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
