Tracking Santa: I can't install the Google Earth Web Plug-in (mac).. help please! I have six hours to get this working for my nieces... - I've downloaded the plugin, but when I doubleclick on it, nothing happens.
- The file info says it should open with Plug-in Installer, but I can't find that on my Mac.
- I've installed Google Earth, proper, but I don't think the whole Norad / Santa thing is part of the real app.
- This is a Powerbook running 10.4.11, and Firefox 3.5.6

What is the best event listing plugin for Wordpress? Or is there a simple way to create a custom template to make event listings? I run a book blog in Philadelphia and would like to list monthly author events and readings. I have looked at some Wordpress plugins for event listings, but I'm not sure what the best one is for my purposes. (There are lots of them.) Basically, I'd like something that allows:

1. a book photo from my Wordpress media library

2. inputs for time, date, event, address, and map. I'd also like to be able to include a link to the bookstore or event.

3. I don't want the event to post directly to my Wordpress main blog. I'd like to create a page that lists events on a monthly basis -- and link to that page at the top of my blog. (The plug-ins I've tried immediately post an event to the main blog site.)

I don't know PHP but I am comfortable with HTML. I've been coding these listings by hand, though, and it seems to be taking a really long time. I'm sure there's a much easier way. If you use an events plugin or know of an easy way to do this, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you. Mel

Is there an existing greasemonkey script, firefox plugin, etc, that will help me enter data into forms? Basically I have a web application that our company uses for bug tracking. The field where you enter most of the data is a regular textbox, that accepts HTML. Our process is to fill out a "form" and put it in this box - we have a template that we paste in and then type the data in. This is a bit tedious to say the least, error prone, etc.

I'd like to have a script that lets me "add" a button above or below the textbox, which will pop up a window with a user-defined form (checkboxes, radios, text widgets, maybe calendar widget, etc) and let me enter data that way. When I'm done it pastes this into the form in html.

I'm having trouble even figuring out good search terms for this so I come up with tons of greasemonkey scripts but it's mostly little one offs for facebook or mafiawars or something like that.

A wordpress plugin to make a "customer login" section. Ok, I know it's weird to ask this on mefi, but after failing elsewhere on the net, I thought I'd give it a try.

My wordpress site sells one and only one product, which is renewed weekly (aka a subscription).

I want the customer to fill out some data that I want, then they're taken to paypal to pay (and they have to fill out some new data [like credit card info] which I don't care about seeing, though some of it is redundant [name] so it'd be nice if that was pre-polulated in the paypal page). (By the way, this is a small operation so I can't afford to "upgrade" paypal beyond "website payments standard.")

Then later, customers can come back, log into their "my account" section, and make changes: like updates to their name or address, or canceling their subscription.

Also, I want access to all the data about all my customers.

There has to be a wordpress plugin that does something like this. I've tried a few e-commerce plugins, but they all failed in one way or another... what advice does metafilter have for me?

Does anyone know of an MP3 player or a plug-in for an MP3 player that will allow me to do A-B comparisons? Basically I want to load two different mp3 files start them both at the same time and then have a switch that lets me switch back and forth between them. Mostly I want to compare the 2009 remastered Beatles songs with the originals.

Wordpress plugin incompatibility

Wordpress Filter: Plugin incompatibility with my theme - website screws up on IE. How do I fix it? 2 of my plugins (Contact Form 7, Post Tabs) give a java script error when enabled on this site. The js error doesn't do much in firefox but it renders the whole site disfunctional in IE ( drop down nav doesn't work, tabs under the headline slider don't work, etc).

In IE, when I have debugging enabled, I get an error pop-up stating that there is a error on Line 89. After I click "debug", this is what is shown:

Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method

Inside the file, the following code is highlighted on line 89:

{return jQuery.easing[jQuery.easing.def](x,t,b,c,d);}

So how do I fix this issue in IE? Do I need to contact the plugin author to check if they are using the latest jQuery? ( the theme author says that he is using the latest jQuery) Is there any way around this issue?

Is it possible to have a web browser plugin/macro that will untick boxes on a webpage by default? I am helping with a college club, and part of the job involves registering people for races. The difficulty is that the website that almost all race organizers use, checks boxes for all club members by default for every race. So if two people want to register for a race, I need to untick 50 boxes for every race.

I was wondering if there existed some type of plugin for firefox that could be used to untick these boxes. I usually use windows xp, but if answers are dependent on using Mac/Linux they would be also welcome as I sometimes use these OSes.

Where can I find a plugin for VLC to play RV40? RV40 is the Real Media Video 4.0 codec. VLC can't play it - I'm wondering if there is a plugin available for VLC to let it play it without having to download realplayer.

Threaded comments for Wordpress?

Looking for a great threaded comment plugin for Wordpress - preferably one that you can recommend from experience. Looking to beef up our commenting functionality (Wordpress sites), and want to find the best-in-breed plugin for threaded comments, commenter profile pages, moderation, etc.

We're aware of IntenseDebate and Disqus, but we're really looking for something where the commenter profile pages live on our site, with our branding.

There are tons of advanced comment functionality plugins out there, so a first-hand experience would be much appreciated, if possible. We love the way commenting works on Gawker media sites, as a point of reference - if there's a plugin that approximates that, we'd literally squeal with delight.

Free is best, of course.

Is there a way to push the installation of browser plug-ins on a network where users don't have workstation admin rights (windows network)? We are running windows server 2003, and have a network of maybe 19 Windows XP workstations. We have our network policy set up so that domain users are not workstation admins, so they can't install malware.

Problem is, they also can't install things like java updates or flash player updates. Group Policy allows us to send them Windows updates automatically, but I was wondering if it was possible to push updates for these browser plug-ins to all machines using an admin command of some kind? It would certainly be a pain in the ass to have to walk around and install this individually on each machine for the client.

Help me get the Wordpress audio player plugin to work? Please?

I'm having trouble implementing the Wordpress audio player plugin on my website. Please help a baffled man. I've installed the Wordpress audio player plugin on my website, but for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong -- it's not showing up on the page.

I'm writing the page using the "html" setting on the wordpress control panel, and I'm following the instructions listed under "usage" in the 1pixelout link above. The file I'm trying to play is definitely in the folder I'm directing the player to (I'm hosted, it's not just a WP blog); I can link to it conventionally (as in, without the player).

The only change I made was to change the audio files directory path from "/audio" to "/uploads." I've even tried checking the box (in the audio player controls on my WP control panel) that replaces all links to mp3 files with a player instance. Didn't work.

Can someone help me out here? I have a feeling there's some extremely minor thing I'm doing wrong, so don't think I'm too foolish. Thanks.

Please help me find a Wordpress theme suited to a website that will be composed mostly of static pages! And possibly a plugin, too. I'm seeking a Wordpress theme to use in constructing a website for a small family business. I'm new to Wordpress and so am hoping for specific theme recommendations from those who are more familiar with the many options out there.

I am looking for a theme that:

--is well suited to using "static" pages, since the site will mostly be composed of these; preferably offers more than one layout option
--has a nav bar at the top
--has two columns, one of which will contain a graphic and brief introductory (static) text
--fluid width (negotiable)

[The second column--I hope--will be headed something like "Recent Events at Company X" and will contain snippets of posts from the company's blog. I would like each one to include a thumbnail graphic from that post. I believe that Neutica, for example, does something like this automatically, but from what I have read, you can also use an RSS feed and/or plugin. So I would also be interested in tools that can help me achieve this.]

The blog will also be accessible from the nav bar, as will the rest of the site, which will be simple: an "About Us" page, a FAQ, a "Contact Us" page, and a page featuring the product line. The company makes concrete objects (um, not literally concrete, you understand) and there aren't a lot of them; they're specialty items mostly bought by institutions. Eventually each product will have its own subpage.

I expect to have to do some customization, and acquire some new skills, but I'm trying to limit that and/or stick to what I know best. I'm decent with CSS. Haven't touched PHP for years, except for some recent reviewing, and have never used Javascript; but I can acquire enough of either to cut, paste, and edit code, and even write some clunky stuff. However, my graphics skillz are minimal, so although ideally I would like a theme with some visual interest, I have to be able to use any non-photo graphics without major alteration. Anything with a "watery" look (blue, flowing, pictures of water) would be a bonus.

I'm still learning, so please be gentle. If I'm asking for too much, I'd be happy for suggestions of themes that fulfill part of my needs. Or maybe this is simpler than I think. I've searched a good amount in the themes on the Wordpress site, though, and somewhat elsewhere, and all my candidates seem like they'll require a lot of work.

Although everybody loves a free theme, I'd consider themes costing up to $100, perhaps more depending on how well-suited it is to our purposes.

Wayback Machine Plugin for ALL old/dead outbound links on a website?

My old website still gets a lot of hits. But many of the outbound links I posted years back are no longer valid, are dead or have changed location. Is there any way to integrate the Wayback Machine Internet Archive into my site's code so that links are redirected to the archive for the date they were originally posted? Ideally I would like an integrated plugin that directed old outbound links to their archived page on Wayback automatically. It would be great if visitors to the site hardly even knew their click had been redirected. I would like to implement it site-wide, so that either:

1. All outbound links were directed to the original date they were posted, or
2. If links are dead then the plugin kicks in and directs to the wayback archive, or
3. The plugin places a Wayback version of each link next to the original (something like: Original Link [archive])

(My site is a self-hosted blogger blog - the old version - if that makes a difference...)

Is there a way?

I'd like to set up a handful of posts (or pages, it really doesn't matter) to be editable by specific people. If I have 10 posts, I want to allow 10 different people to each edit "their" page. They should not be able to do anything else, meaning no editing of other pages, no creation of new pages, no deleting their page. Just a login directing them to the edit form of their page. I can't find any sort of plugin to do this. Do you know of one? In the absence of a plugin, any other ideas on how to accomplish this?

Oscar pool ballot software?

Looking for an online poll service or WP plug in that would work with an office Oscar pool. Oscar nominations come out tomorrow, and once again duty falls to me to create a ballot for a bunch of friends participating in an Oscar pool. The way we've done for years includes different points being assigned to different categories, so the person who predicts the most Oscar recipients doesn't necessarily win the pool.

I would like to create an online version of the ballot that allows me to also assign the point values, so after the awards are over all I need to do is enter the awardees, and it will automatically tally the points for anyone who filled out the ballot online.

Does anyone know of an free service or Wordpress plug in that could handle this?

WordPress 2.7 and Angsuman’s Authenticated WordPress Plugin

On one of my WordPress hosted blogs, I previously used Angsuman’s Authenticated WordPress Plugin to restrict access to registered users. After upgrading to WordPress 2.7, the plugin doesn't work anymore. It won't let anybody log in, trapping people in a constant loop of entering (correct) passwords and being returned to the login screen. Does anybody know:

(a) how to alter the plugin so it works with 2.7. I don't want to shell out US$30 for 'Authenticator Plugin Pro' when only about ten people access the site in question.

(b) of another plugin that does the same thing - blocks off a WordPress site to everyone other than registered users with passwords.

Firefox: different start page than home page? I'm a relatively recent convert to Firefox 3, from Maxthon. Mostly I like it, but there's one feature of Maxthon I liked that I haven't been able to replicate in Firefox. I'd like to have a fixed start page (the page that comes up when you first open Firefox) that's different from the home page (the page you get when you click the Home icon). This was possible in Maxthon. Is there a Firefox plugin which allows this?

Where can I find a plug-n-play wordpress plugin that displays (to readers) which posts have received the most pageviews? You would think this would be simple to find, on some plugin directory or Google search, but I have not had any luck. The plugins that I find turn out to display popularity by comments (not pageviews), or they're so old that they were not made to be sidebar widgets, or some other problem.

I just want something in the sidebar that basically says, hey, here are the five (or whatever) posts on this blog that have been viewed more than any other posts on this blog.

Is there a plugin or AppleScript for Apple Mail that would popup a simple dialog box that says "Are you sure you want to send this message?" I send far too many messages that I probably would have edited (or scrapped) with 2 seconds of reflection (drunk or otherwise.) Not to mention all the times an itchy trigger finger fires off a message while forgetting the attachment. (i.e. please help save me from myself.)

Woohoo, I'm converting my Prius to a plug-in! Now I want a personalized license plate to go with it. Some constraints:
- Must start with two letters
- Maximum six characters (no punctuation), minimum of two
- If numbers are used, they have to come at the end of the plate, and not be sandwiched by letters

It can be geeky, cheeky, electricky, eco-y, or whatever (well, at least some connection to it being a plug in/electric car).

My blog subscribes to your podcast, and gives my readers links to your shows.

I want my blog to aggregate links to video podcasts on a specific topic. I have the subscription information. Can anyone recommend a (free) WordPress plugin that will allow my blog to subscribe to a video podcast and provide my readers with the links to see the videos? So far, I've tried feedwordpress and WP-o-Matic. They're both close, but they don't provide the url for the enclosure.

There also is a for-pay plugin whose name escapes me...

There are dozens of hits for plugins that allow one to /publish/ their podcast on their WordPress-based blog, but very few that allow a blog to publish content from an existing RSS feed.

Any ideas?

Searching for a Wordpress tagging plugin that will work like the tag search functions work here on MeFi or on del.icio.us. It's got to be out there, I just don't know how to search for it. I'd like a plugin that will know when I'm viewing tag X that there are other posts that include tag X and suggest tag Y or tags X+Y.

Like, for example, here on the music tag, I can either search for things that have also been tagged along with music, or search for posts tagged as music+mp3.

how do I tell a browser in osx which plugin should handle a certain file type? I installed the vlc plugin for osx to enable safari and firefox to handle vlc-streams.

vlc also tries to handle mp3 files opened in either browser.
I don't want it to do that. I prefer quicktime handling such files in-browser, which is exactly what used to happen. (the qt plugin can begin playing while still downloading, the vlc plugin says "no video" until the whole download is completed.)

I tried RCDefaultApp 2.0.1 but had no luck.

Is there a WordPress plugin that will let me make forms for people to fill in, and then dump the results to the database instead of emailing the results to me? I want reports with Google Charts (specifically the US and World maps). There are at least a dozen different survey/questionnaire/poll/form plugins, but nearly all of them merely email submissions to a given address.

I want to be able to maintain real-time statistics about who has filled out a form so that I can tie it to the APIs from Google Chart and produce maps for my site. Ideally once I set this up, it should run without any interaction from me. (No exporting data to create a report manually). I'm not worried about spoofing for now.

So far I've only found two contenders:

Surveygizmo, which is close but doesn't seem to support the mapping report that I'm interested in.

SurveyFly, which hasn't been updated to support recent versions of WordPress.

Is there something out there that I'm missing?
