Our just-dead entertainment system was a 1999 moderate-price set-up. We don’t need to understand why something is the best system; if it meets our needs (details coming right up) and it costs around $1500 we’d be delirious with joy. We're willing to buy an entirely new system, and/or happy to reuse the currently working bits. We're not audiophiles (we have mild hearing impairments). We'd like something that will still work in a decade. [more inside]
I have a Sony Bravia TV hooked up to a Playstation 3 which is my main media box. There is now an HBO Go app for the PS3. Yay! But, as a Comcast subscriber, I cannot activate the app on my PS3. Boo. Beyond donating more money to Net Neutrality causes how can I, with the equipment I already own, most easily get HBOGo content to my TV? [more inside]
My nephews, 8 and 11, have fallen in love with Call of Duty. Their mother isn't happy with their new love affair, but their neighborhood friends have an older brother so, what's done is done. I would like to get them one or two games for Christmas that are not quite so violent, or at least not so much realistic violence. [more inside]
PS4 is out, so time for me to get a PS3 and enjoy a sweet, sweet back catalogue of cheap, cheap games. But given that I also like to 'open' my consoles for media playing / emulator goodness, which new or used model should I buy? The main concern seems to be downgrading the official firmware from whatever it is now to 3.55 so that unofficial firmware can be installed. Is this easily done on all models (for example, the latest 12gb or 500gb jobs) or only older slim / fat models?
My beloved 60GB "Fat" PS3 has kicked, after many years of faithful service. I'm trying to figure out how to replace it with minimal hassle and without losing anything from the hard drive. Google search turns up conflicting advice. Long-ish explanation follows. [more inside]
I'm down in Central Florida for over a week and kind of stuck in the house. I want to play Playstation 3 exclusive "The Last of Us" but don't really need the console after a little over a week. What can I do? [more inside]
I recently picked up a cheap used Playstation 3. I'm entirely new to console gaming but have played PC games for many years. What older, must-not-miss games are there for the system? I've heard about Uncharted 3 and Red Dead Redemption. Others?
I'm looking for games available for the PlayStation 3 with (fully clothed, not overtly sexualized) female protagonists, or protagonists of unspecified gender. Ideally, the games would also be non-violent or minimally violent, and they would rely largely on puzzle-solving rather than time-sensitive and reflex-dependent jump-and-shoot strategies. Will self-repairing my broken PS3 make it invalid for future repairs by Sony (even if it's already out of warranty)? [more inside]
PlayStation 3 firmware update 3.0 is truly a pile. Font size is ginormous on my 42" LCD (akin to going from 1024x768 to 640x480), icons are shilling for the PlayStation Network in every menu and there's a hideous update bar in the upper right-hand corner I can't figure out how to turn off. I wish I hadn't taken the plunge -- if you haven't, don't do it! Does anyone have solutions to mitigate this nightmare, which has turned the menus of my console and home theatre box into a janky-looking POS?
My PS3 done broke. Should I shell out the cash to repair, or hold off and see what Sony's got up its sleeve?

I'm looking at buying a Playstation 3 pretty much only so I can have a really good Blu-ray player. It's highly unlikely I'll ever buy any PS3 games beyond GTA4, Rockband and maybe Little Big Planet. Given this, should I just buy the 40GB model of the console or are the extra features of the 80GB model (flash card reader, SACD support etc) worth the extra cash in the long run?
