I can't find how to have Google create a playlist using only my music on my phone. Does it still exist? [more inside]
My partner, MeFi's own Comrade Doll just got her United States citizenship after a long and winding journey. She's very glad of it and to salute her, I'm throwing an all-American cookout this weekend: burgers, barbecue, and apple pie, flags on everything, the works. Help me make the perfect thematic soundtrack for our party! [more inside]
Suggestions for songs to add to a toddler bedtime playlist? [more inside]
I like a quality in music that crosses genres and artists. The closest I can describe it is the physicality of a song, when a song has multiple layers and textures to it, as diverse as possible, like a single soaring voice above a dense harsh house base, or multiple stereo-spaced out tracks of different instruments and voices interwoven. I'm looking for more songs like these - below the fold are some favourite examples to hopefully explain this from my spotify lists. And whoot if there's an actual music term for this preference! Wanted: music to remind me to live deliberately, live consciously, and not coast through life on autopilot. [more inside]
After years of avoiding iTunes 11, a new laptop (Windows 8) has recently forced my hand. Needless, to say I'm unimpressed. More to the point, as a semi-pro-DJ who works from rather large playlists and loves working with shuffled playlists, I have some rather particular needs ... [more inside]
With the birth of our second child (a girl) imminent, my wife and I are looking for songs to listen to during labor. Can you recommend happy, upbeat songs that reference being born or could be interpreted that way, even if they aren't directly about it? [more inside]
I'm trying to make a (somewhat belated) 2014 "Mixtape" to share with friends. I have a Mac-centric home network, but I'm getting frustrated trying to simply do the following: 1. Create a playlist 2. Order the playlist and change album artist etc so it will show up as a various artists album 3. Export the songs. [more inside]
I'm looking for a very simple HTML audio player that I can customize with CSS. [more inside]
Suppose someone wanted to make a playlist of only music that was licensed by BMI for an event, to avoid paying ASCAP fees. Is there any short cut to avoid having to search for each individual song on the BMI web site? Has anyone already assembled and published some lists of BMI -only dance/workout/party type music?
I'm old enough to be sort of out of touch with new music, so when I have a little downtime at the end of the year one of the things I try to do is seek out some of what I've missed over the year. Ideally, what I'd like is some way to listen to to some "best of" from 2014 while I do other things, like trying to clean up or cook, for example, so without having to click each track one at a time. I'm trying to find some music with simple instrumentation and composition with a focus on drums/percussion/heavy guitar and intense/strong vocals. I'm not sure how to describe what I'm looking for, but I do have a couple of examples. I blame the bear for reviving this intense need... [more inside]
I'm going home for the holidays for the first time in five years. Help me assemble the perfect soundtrack for my trip. [more inside]
I am looking for SoCal music, the newer the better. It doesn't have to be from there necessarily but it has to evoke it. No Eagles. [more inside]
I was a child in the early/mid 90s and loved listening to the radio. I'd like to find the best free option of replicating that experience. I don't just want a "best of the 90s" playlist with the very biggest hits. Details inside. [more inside]
Anywhere from Dixieland to Penguin Café Orchestra, via Django Reinhardt and something Latin, what musicians/tracks/albums can you suggest for a 4-hour playlist to make a happy, potentially boppable score to a cocktail party? Would be nice to divide it into intro, main and outro parts - but all suggestions are welcome for a fun, refined, vocal-less (or at least mainly so), non-pop soundtrack to a charming, light-hearted evening. (Bonus points if sourceable via Rdio.) Thanks!
I run iTunes Match on four devices: a 2010 iMac, a 2012 iMac, a 2012 Macbook, and an iPhone 5c. One of my favorite playlists has gone missing on the phone, the Macbook, and the 2012 iMac, but not from the 2010 iMac. What's gone wrong and how can I fix it? [more inside]
I'm constructing a running playlist and looking for some rock music with a quasi-military edge featuring big, heavy drums. Like this or this. Not interested in metal. Can you find me some other examples? [more inside]
I have three video files that I would like to play sequentially, stopping in between each. The trigger for playing the next video should be a button that when pressed, emulates a spacebar press (I have this button already). I'm trying to do this with VLC player on a Mac. [more inside]

I'm trying to put together a motivational playlist about keeping your edge and staying intense and focused, preferably with an edgy, angular sound. The best I can come up with are Talking Heads' "Stay Hungry" (which has somewhat oblique lyrics) and Spoon's "They Never Got You." Any more ideas?
I'm wondering if it's technically possible to "weight" a song's importance on a playlist so that it has a higher chance of being played. With that weigh ranging from "100% certainty" to "do not care one way or the other." [more inside]
Hi! I'm traveling to a french immersion program this summer for 5 weeks. Nothing but French everything is allowed...even music. Anyone have some recommendations for great french music (with lyrics)? I've listened to Yelle, and have exhausted my Carla Bruni playlist. All genres are welcomed, but I'd especially love some contemporary stuff! Merci!
Looking for some hatred-filled songs to channel my frustration. [more inside]
I'm putting together a Spotify playlist for running (working my way up to 5K), which so far includes Hallogallo by Neu! and Jenny Ondioline by Stereolab, and some songs by Fujiya and Miyagi. What I like about them is the driving, repetitive, steady motorik beat (or a beat that, if not technically motorik, gives the same feeling). I'd love to get more recommendations for other songs that would go on such a playlist.
Looking for songs that would sound good on a playlist with I Am The Walrus (The Beatles) and Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) [more inside]
I like Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt" and Willie Nelson's cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist." Give examples of other covers in this genre.

Trying to put together an upbeat playlist for running and really enjoying Pharrell Williams's Happy and Janelle Monae's Tightrope. To me they have a very similar sound/style, which also sounds like some oldies (though right now I can't think of any). Is there a name for that style? [more inside]

I'm starting to date (after only having been in Serious Big-Deal Relationships previously) and am having fun, not looking for anything serious. This entails a certain amount of rejection that I'm trying to keep in appropriate perspective. I'm looking for songs to compile into a playlist, on the theme of "oh well, it didn't work out, I'm still fabulous/will easily survive." These are not Big Heartbreak songs, just "eh, too bad, no big deal." Ingrid Michaelson's "Girls Chase Boys" is the perfect example of this. Do you have other suggestions? [more inside]
I love 'Let it Go' and 'Defying Gravity'. What other songs are about rebellious spirits, personal epiphany and/or acceptance of their uniqueness?
I'm looking for more love songs with a specific theme - essentially, "You drive me fucking crazy and sometimes I want to throttle you and we're both kind of fucked up AND ALSO I love you more than anything and need you more than air and think you're the best person ever." [more inside]
You've saved your money, quit your job, and found yourself adventuring across the country with your lover/best friend riding shotgun. For those long stretches of desert driving and other spans of nothingness, when it's the middle of the night and you can smell caffeine coming out your pores, what is your jazz playlist? Need advice from desktop productivity nerds, radio nerds, MP3 playlist nerds, and general problem solving nerds. I volunteer at a community FM radio station. Everything we play is a stream from a Winamp playlist (look inside for the reasons for this). We need a piece of software (or a creative solution) that can be automated to jump to a place in a playlist and then schedule itself from there. Very complex details inside. [more inside]
One of my closest, music-loving pals is moving to Germany to pursue her dream post-doc, hooray! I want to send her off in style with a great playlist. [more inside]
"Same Love" by Macklemore is the epitome of a conscious (social, environmental justice) pop music song that has been a hit over the past two years. I'm looking for others to create a playlist - pop music songs that have been hits with a socially environmentally conscious message, or at least are not misogynist or violent in any way - talk about love, relationships, etc in a respectful way. Can you make any suggestions? Thx!
We're throwing a house party tomorrow, and I'm looking for a painless way to get some top-40-ish best-of-2013 music playing all night. [more inside]
