How to bring blueberry bushes back to life?

I got a pair of blueberry bushes recently. They were potted and intended for ground planting, but I was unable to plant them. I was out of town for a week and a half and they went about that long with little or no water. When I returned, the leaves were brown and crispy and the soil was bone-dry. I put them in the ground and watered them copiously every day, but it's been a few days and they seem no better. Is there anything I can do to revive them, or am I out of luck?

Beautifying my backyard, and I need a little help!

I live in zone 9b (northern CA) and I'm looking for good ground-cover plants that are hearty, can withstand moist/rocky soil, and need lots of water. The challenge is that this area (about 8 square feet) is right next to the foundation of our house, and the gutter pours water into the area. Details below the fold. [more inside]

Seeking recommendations for books about plants and gardening

This past week I was at a job interview and was asked what my favorite book on gardening was and I had trouble answering. I eventually said Dirr, but felt that my answer was kind of boring; this led to the realization that I should probably do some reading. Please help me find some good books about plants. [more inside]

How to build a perennial garden from the ground up?

Talk to me about building a perennial garden from the ground up. I'm a fairly new gardener, and have recently bought a number of plants online. This worked well, because we have a small but complicated garden layout (in terms of sun/shade/water) and I can figure out specifics without getting overwhelmed. I also enjoy being present in a nursery to see the plants in person, but the good places are a fairly long drive away and weekend crowds can drive me insane. Given a list of desired plants, how do you go about buying them? What is the most cost effective way of doing this? [more inside]

Climbing Peas Need First Aid!

I planted climbing peas about 2 weeks ago and they are turning yellow, drying out despite a fair amount of water, and losing their nice green color. I think I overwatered them to begin with, but I let them go without water for a few days, and put them outside so they could get more light. Now they look like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/60463163@N06/?saved=1 Please help! What should I do? I live in San Jose, zone 8B if that matters. Nights are in the upper 40's and days are in the mid to upper 60's. Gardening newbie, all other plants are doing well.
