How can I create a lush, green balcony?

I have a small apartment balcony and I hope to be able to have all the walls covered in green this summer. I feel like there is a lot of potential for it to go well, maybe, but I just have no idea what to do! I've been researching, but I could really use some help in weighing my options. Gardeners, plant lovers, apartment dwellers, please help with your insights! [more inside]

Edible plants for bay area garden

Just moved to a place in SF south bay (mediterranean climate) with an empty raised bed garden, approx 10' x 5'. There are a couple of trees over it and fences/buildings blocking the west and east, so it only receives filtered light in the middle of the day. Any recommendations for edible plants (including herbs) that will grow well here? [more inside]

What is this plant in my back garden?

Can someone identify this plant? For the record, everything that looks red in the photo is actually a dead brown colour. It's looked mostly like this since I moved into this house in October, but the green bits on the ground are new. I'd like to know what it is so I know how to manage it. [more inside]

MISSION: AERIAL FOOD CUBE

I want to make a food-producing container garden on our (rented) apartment's small balcony. The good news: the balcony gets tons of sun. The bad news: the usable footprint is about 6'x6' and 6' of vertical space. What can I do to grow the most vegetables in this space? [more inside]

Ideas for outdoor container plants that accept ill-treatment?

I have a practical need/personal desire to have some outdoor plants in containers -- some small, some medium, some large containers--as well as, preferably, some hanging baskets. How can I make my balcony awesome? Difficulty level: allergic to dirt.

We recently moved to an apartment with a large balcony. We were super excited about the possibilities, especially growing veggies / herbs / flowers with our kids. But surprise!! We can't find dirt! My child has a peanut allergy, and - WHO KNEW?? - most commercially available dirt / potting soil has peanuts and peanut shells as a filler. My child's allergy is severe enough that we won't take the risk of having it around. How can we enjoy the full potential of our balcony and maybe even enjoy some living, growing things? [more inside]

How to bring blueberry bushes back to life?

I got a pair of blueberry bushes recently. They were potted and intended for ground planting, but I was unable to plant them. I was out of town for a week and a half and they went about that long with little or no water. When I returned, the leaves were brown and crispy and the soil was bone-dry. I put them in the ground and watered them copiously every day, but it's been a few days and they seem no better. Is there anything I can do to revive them, or am I out of luck?

How to build a perennial garden from the ground up?

Talk to me about building a perennial garden from the ground up. I'm a fairly new gardener, and have recently bought a number of plants online. This worked well, because we have a small but complicated garden layout (in terms of sun/shade/water) and I can figure out specifics without getting overwhelmed. I also enjoy being present in a nursery to see the plants in person, but the good places are a fairly long drive away and weekend crowds can drive me insane. Given a list of desired plants, how do you go about buying them? What is the most cost effective way of doing this? [more inside]
