Step by step guide to get our future married house in order?

We're getting hitched! Yay! I freak out about money, and I freak out that my fiancé doesn't freak out about money as much as I freak out. Is there a good step-by-step guide you'd recommend that we can go through together to make sure we're covering all of our bases for saving for retirement, saving for other stuff, and paying down debt?

Important aspects of planning for your family

Hi all, Belated Happy New Year everyone! I am a 32yr old single mother of a beautiful 1yr old, and this year I’ve decided to plan ahead to help me fulfill my parenthood responsibilities to the best. We are a US middle-class family of two. Originally not from this country, I need to research several important aspects of planning for a future here. I hope to get some useful suggestions from those of you who are savvy about these things :-) [more inside]

Is this investing in my future or is this a stupid decision?

I've been offered to be hired where I have been a contractor. However, there is a health insurance issue that would cost me a lot of money for several months. But I would have a great retirement plan. I have nothing in savings and $100k I just consolidated in student loans, so this issue is just complicating things. [more inside]

Financial planning for the poor?

I'm a formerly broke person who is beginning to become unbroke, although not without stumbling from time to time. I have a few strong goals - buy a house, get my student debt in order (not paid off - just in order), save up enough for a couple of large ($5000) purchases, improve my credit score to mortgage-minimum. I need help getting there. [more inside]

Financial Advisers - What's in it for them?

I hired a month-by-month financial adviser last year after my divorce to help me get things in order. The guy I worked with left the company last year on May 13. He called me yesterday, 366 days after he left from his new gig wanting me to be his client again. (non-compete plus 1) That's when things got weird. [more inside]

Planning to have a baby before getting married?

So, I'm trying to get some opinions here: My fiance and I have been engaged for 4 months and are in our mid-20s. We are both in school (undergrad for him, grad for me), but due to my income, we wanted to wait one more year, so that it would be financially better for us (e.g., paying tuition, etc). We are both interested in having children, however, something has come up for me health-wise (ulcerative colitis) that would make it less safe (because of medications) to have a baby later on, compared with now. Here are my questions for you: 1) Would you have a baby before marriage? What would be the reasons? 2) Has anyone actively planned this before? How did it work out? I know some would say suck it up and push up the wedding, but it would save us a good 20K or so.

Am I crazy to offer a gift of financial planning services to my cousins?

My Aunt, Uncle and cousins have never been good with money, and have also never had well paying jobs. My Uncle has just inherited a (low) six-figure sum. Do I try to help them out by offering to build a financial plan for them? [more inside]
