Seasons and weather on a tidally locked planet (for a story)

Planet of the Apes: Is Doctor Zeius Proved right?

In Planet of the Apes Dr. Zeius is a religious zealot, and his goal is to not have is vision of the world upended. He denies he truth of Taylor and at the end destroys Cornelius' dig site. As he is leading Cornelius and Zira away at the end he says that what he is doing he is doing for the good of all the apes. I used to take this as an act of hypocrisy, but on re-watching it this line is juxtaposed with Taylor's discovery of the Statue of Liberty. It feels to almost be implying that Zeius is right, that progress is not an inherent good. What is the intent of these last few scenes meant to be? [more inside]

Captain Planet's John Hancock?

I have this poster of Captain Planet that I want to frame to put in my office and I am thinking of "autographing" it. However, I do not seem to find any evidence of Captain Planet being able to either read or write, despite having a great spoken vocabulary. This could be because the earth does not have its own written language or alphabet. I am thinking the best thing to do is punch a hole in the poster and then hang it. Do you have any better ideas?

Hollow Earth Physics

Until last night I was unaware that the hollow earth conspiracy was a thing. Since then, I've been driven crazy by trying to imagine the physics of it. What would gravity be like on a shell planet? Details about the exact setup within. [more inside]

Want to find out the name of a story I have forgotten

I am trying to find a short sci-fi story but cannot recall either the writer or the title. The story is about a spaceship marooned on a hostile ice planet where they are constantly under siege from the indigenous race there - not described. The people undertake a genetic development programme to alter themselves and their offspring to cope with the outside environment and be more hostile, stronger and savage than the indigenous population. The denouement of the story is the leader telling the last generation of people there that the children are ready to leave .... and that is all I can remember. Can anybody give me any clues or even the name of the story? Kevin

Software is saving the planet

I'm learning how to write scalable "enterprise-grade" software solutions, e.g. on the so-called "cloud." I've been programming for a couple decades, so this is not a stretch. Software is eating the world anyway, so I'm going to use software to save the world. Please help me cast a wide net. [more inside]

Appealing, school-appropriate video game clip?

I would like to find a link for a short video clip of a video game that meets certain criteria. It will go into a presentation to elementary school teachers, as a quick backdrop to a point about interactive games that will be used in school, and that will be fun while challenging kids to think and learn. (It won't itself BE that game; it just has to plausibly look the part.) It needs to have some connection to an outer space theme. [more inside]

How does copyright law work with RSS feeds? Can they be republished?

What are the legal implications of re-publishing full-text entries from another site's RSS feed? Planet sites do it for mostly legitimate purposes, and spam-logs do it for, well, spammy purposes. But are there any laws that apply? The US copyright code doesn't assume the information is already freely available on the internet, so it seems like a grey area. [more inside]

Help me find Mike Ploog's comic art.

Severely comicbook-geekish question: Storyboard and film-design artist Mike Ploog used to do comics. He did some breathtaking b&w art on the 1970s Marvel Planet of the Apes Magazine. Does anyone have a Ploog checklist, or know which POTA issues between 16 and 29 Ploog did art for? [more inside]
