What are these bugs I'm hearing near Pittsburgh?

It doesn't seem to match the cicada or katydid noises I've found around YouTube. It's outside a suburban window - it is a "buzz" (it sounds a bit like a "hiss" in the recording, but was buzzier to my ears), with ~2.5 seconds of noise followed by a ~2 second pause. Listen here.

Pittsburgh radio spot, early 90s

When I lived in the Pgh area, one of the drive-time radio shows would occasionally host a spot from a guy who'd give a 5-minute rant in the most perfectly raw Pgh accent you could ever imagine. I don't recall much about his persona -- just another working stiff from Steeltown -- but his pitch-perfect voice was a major element in the act. Any memories?

Cabin or B&B with privacy within 4 hours of Pittsburgh

We would like to go away in April to celebrate both a birthday and a wedding anniversary. Our ideal location would be a fairly nice B&B or resort that has either a private cabin or outbuilding, as well as proximity to hiking/the woods. Ideally within 3.5 to 4 hours drive from Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh: Riding the choo choo with Daddy

What's fun around a Pittsburgh Light Rail stop for a 2.5-year-old? I'm taking my toddler-daughter for a ride on the train tomorrow. Last week we went to Dormont Park. What should we do this week? I haven't spent much time in the South Hills. (I'm looking to go South, not North - we know the North Side in-and-out) Meal suggestions also welcome!

Gift ideas for my mom, Pittsburgh edition

I know there's a strong 'burgh contingent here, so I'm hoping you can help me brainstorm a birthday present for my mom. She has had a busy year as a caretaker - she started the year on the west coast with me welcoming her new granddaughter & helping me recover from a c/section. There's been a few trips back to the midwest to help my grandmother with health issues and then cleaning out her parents house of 60+ years. On top of that my dad had surgery about a month ago. If that isn't enough on her plate she and my father have spent the last 3 years renovating a house, they finally moved in this summer but I don't think she's been there more than 2 weeks at any time. A lot of unexpected travel, some assorted business issues, trips getting extended due to unforeseen circumstances, etc. It obviously hasn't all been bad (new house! new grandbaby!) but I think she needs some time to recharge herself. Any ideas? [more inside]

Walking around downtown Pittsburgh?

My partner and I are very excited about our trip to Pittsburgh next month! But I have a question about walkability. We'll be staying downtown on Penn Avenue and it looks like we can walk to a lot of places quite easily, but should we? We are big walkers and our city is very residential downtown, but it seems Pittsburgh's downtown gets pretty empty at night...is that a concern re: safety or for any other reason? [more inside]

Pittsburgh Photography Locations

My wife started her own photography business about a half-hour east of Pittsburgh; so far the jobs she's had have all been located east of Pittsburgh, and usually even further east than we live. She has been approached by a friend-of-a-friend to do outdoor family portraits and is looking for a location sort of in the middle for both parties. We are located in the Monroeville area, and the client is in the South Hills/Beechview area. The client is looking for a location that won't be super crowded (thus, comfortable enough to be photographed at), has a lake or pond, and hopefully without anything unsightly in the background/on the horizon. Any suggestions? (Bonus: If there is anything unique about the location - ie: an interesting bridge or unique architecture, has a great location for sunset, has some sort of overlook, etc.)

Decent garden center south of Pittsburgh?

I'm going to help my brother install a raised bed and some fruit trees/bushes in a couple of weeks. We're probably going to be putting in some raspberries/blackberries, blueberries, and maybe a few fruit trees. I do not want to purchase diseased/generic junk at a big box. Is there a decent garden center in the West Newton area? Bonus points for tipping me off to somebody who can deliver a yard or three of garden soil/compost. Many thanks!

Where to go on a first date in Pittsburgh?

27 year old straight male living in Pittsburgh. I'm doing the OkCupid thing. I would like to go on a few dates, but I don't know where to go for a first date.
