Some Symbol!

What is this symbol on my old early 20th-century pin? I have what is either a lapel pin or a cufflink that looks like this:

Image One

Image Two

Can anyone provide a clue as to what the symbol is? Maybe what group it came from? The only hints I have are that it came from central Illinois and appears to be from the early 20th century.

There are no other engravings or markings on it.

Laptop charger inlet slowly breaking.

Laptop charger inlet slowly breaking. Hey guys, the [one pin] port where my laptop charger connects is starting to break. I have to connect the charger to the laptop in a particular position for it to work. Otherwise, I'm happy with my 2-year-old laptop. Any advice?

pinless moisture meters with drywall

How accurate are the pinless moisture meters when used on drywall? We are contemplating buying an older house (1900's) in the Pacific Northwest with a finished basement. We realize moisture could be a problem and would like to purchase a moisture meter to keep an eye on it.

The meters with pins seem to work really well, but if we want to test the moisture in the basement often, then we would end up with little holes all over the drywall.

From google, it seems the more common use of moisture meters is for wood, not drywall, so it wasn't clear (to me), if a pinless one would give accurate results with drywall.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience using the pin meters vs pinless meters? How accurate are they in general? With drywall? Why wouldn't you purchase a pinless one vs. one with pins if they were equivalent?

Any other information about monitoring moisture inside of a finished basement would be greatly appreciated!

How to incorporate a museum entry pin into a gift

Give me some ideas for something fun and thoughtful to do with a museum entry pin thingy. You know those little round foldable metal clips you get when you go to a museum that you wear while you're in there? (I'd post a picture, but I don't know what they're called, and none of the possibilities I can think of come up on the Google. Hopefully you know what I'm talking about!)

Well, I'd like to incorporate it into a little gift to my GF who came with me to the museum. I've thought about attaching it to a note, but I've done similar type things and I'm looking for something more creative. I also thought about attaching it as a fun, whimsical necklace or something, but: a) those things are kind of sharp; and b) although I think she'd appreciate it, I don't think she'd ever wear it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, MeFites!

To what level was pinball banned in New York in the 1940s? I know pinball was considered illegal in New York at the time, but what I can't seem to find is whether or not it was strictly a commercial ban of pinball machines, or personal pinball machines were banned as well. I assume they were only banned in commercial locations because the root of the ban lies in the fact that pinball was believed to be more chance than skill, making it gambling. If the machine were for personal use, there would be no gambling involved.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There's a description of it here. and you can see it here and here, although she may be wearing two pins in those pictures.

ShoppingFilter: In order to complete a Halloween costume, I need to acquire some Reagan-related political pins/buttons. However, my initial search has mostly taken me to places that no longer exist! Is there anywhere the Green would suggest I go to in the Washington DC metropolitan area to satiate my thirst for this kind of political paraphernalia? (Note that the buttons/pins do NOT necessarily have to be actual pins from his presidential races. At worst, I just need the Gipper's smiling face in some form or another. I found a few online options, but they all had ridiculous shipping & handling charges... and, also, Halloween is tomorrow. Gack!)

Anyone know of a small device with an LCD for securely storing passwords? An executive at my company is looking for a standalone device (not Blackberry password keeper) that he can carry around that will securely store all his passwords. He is looking for a portable password “keeper” with LCD. He is looking to store all his personal passwords, pin #’s, cc info and so on and to be able to view them without a computer present, hence the LCD requirement. Also it needs to be encrypted so if he loses it, no one can access the data. I haven't been able to find anything. Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

How do I get my PIN from Google Adsense?

How do I get a Google Adsense PIN if I've ordered it twice and still not received it? In order to receive your Google money, you need to enter your PIN, and in order to get the PIN you request it through your account.

When it didn't arrive at the first address I entered, I tried another one and it still didn't arrive. Now that I've requested it twice it won't allow me to request it again. And now the money has been forfeited.

I replied to an email the company sent me warning I was about to forfeit the money I had earned, but they didn't respond. I've tried Google groups for this, and found many people with the same problem but no solutions.

The hardest part seems to be getting any kind of a response from the company. Is there any way to contact this department of Google directly to get an answer? Ideally I could get a person's email or number. Feel free to message me personally if you don't want to put an email in the thread.

Thanks!

Where are these pins?

What are these pins called, and where can I buy them? They're used to hold the fabric protectors on the arms of a few chairs I have. My mom had a few, but I'd like to get more. I tried those little corkscrew style pins, but the heads always pop off. These are almost there, but the little bent shoulder on the ones I'm looking for are what hold them in.

Lapel pins...a worthy fashion accessory?

I'm looking for distinctive lapel pins, preferably silver. Help! I'm sure we've all seen the movies where that one guy wears a cool but subtle pin on his lapel that doesn't seem significant until the end of the movie. Well, I'd like something of that nature! I think silver (polished) would probably be a good medium here, preferably, since it rules out the very cheaply anodized ones that rust and flake. Preferably all silver, black is fine as a secondary color but others would probably clash.

So far I've come up with one I really like( Shin-Ra Pin) but I'm curious what's out there. It doesn't need to be actually meaningful, just good-looking (in fact, this is what makes lapel pins hard to search for...the really cheap ones, and the ones for specific organizations that wouldn't make sense for just anyone to wear!).

Hope you guys have some sources or ideas, thanks!

My sister is in Italy - and is trying to use an italian (Wind) SIM card in her American cingular GSM phone. It's asking her for a PAC and PIN number - which she doesn't know. What does she do? When she left for Italy, her (samsung) phone was still locked. I bought unlocking codes on EBay, and emailed them to her there. These same codes worked fine for my (identical) phone, but she might have made some mistake entering them. Therefore, I can't be 100% sure that her phone is actually unlocked.

Tonight I was paying at a gas station and I used the keypad to enter my pin. The numbers 2, 3 and 4 showed tremendous wear compared to all other keys except the enter key. It's the kind of stupid odd trivia that appeals to me. I Googled "common pin numbers" and it seems "123" is pretty common among the unimaginative. But that doesn't explain 2, 3 and 4 being so well-worn, and not 1. Can you?

How do I convert 7-pin S-video to 4-pin S-video?

Can I "convert" a 7-pin S-video connector to a standard 4-pin S-video connector by simply cutting off the extra pins? Background story: I'm connecting a DVR with S-Video output to a DVD recorder with component input. I bought this adapter, which unfortunately has the 7-pin connector. If the DVR had component output, I'd just use that. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

I don't want to shell out $20 for the 7-pin to 4-pin adapter, so I'm turning to pliers. The 3 extra connections include a "Component Video" connector, its ground, and an unlabeled one.

Finally, RCA is too low-quality to use, so this was my solution.

Thanks!

Anybody ever heard of saprizo.com?

[scamfilter] Anybody ever heard of saprizo.com? [+] (self link) I wrote about it here, but there are far more readers here. Basically they've got a slightly new angle on scamming. They tell me I've won a prize (in a contest I didn't enter) but I need to pay for the shipping.

With a debit card. And I need to provide them my card number, expiration date, and PIN. Does this sound fishy yet?

As of the time I am posting this, saprizo.com is unregistered. How can there be a site there, and is there anything I can do about all of this?
