Where can I find large, sturdy pillows?

Sturdy pillows for sitting up in bed? My bed lacks a headboard, making reading in bed fairly uncomfortable. The problem is that it's a platform bed, which means there is a large gap between the mattress and the wall. Sitting up to read is therefore annoying, because my current pillows (standard feather pillows) slide into the gap, essentially leaving me leaning against the bare wall-- not the most comfortable way to read.

I'm thinking a few big sturdy pillows (the sturdiness of sofa throw pillows but much larger) might help fill in the gap and generally help compensate for the absence of headboard.

Any recommendations about where I could find the perfect pillows?

Thanks!

Cleaning Puke out of Feather Pillows

I have a pair of very heavy, dense feather (not down) pillows that were first owned by my Grandmother. Last night my son vomited all over one of them. Although we stripped the case of quickly, the vomit had already soaked into the pillow. Any suggestions on how to clean this? If they were down I'd just wash and dry them at the laundromat, being aware that it takes down pillows many, many hours to dry. However, with the feather pillows, I don't think even 8 - 10 hours in a commercial dryer would do the trick.

Cheap, decent feather pillows?

Where can I get cheap but decent feather pillows online? I loves me some cold, squishy feather pillow goodness. I had a set of Pacific Coast pillows I got pretty cheap some years (10?) ago (I think they were about $30-40 each) but they lost too much of their spring over the years. So I tried to buy some new ones and every pillow I buy under $50 a piece has the same problem: feathers poking through the ticking. The PC ones never did that. I would have maybe 1 or 2 feather poke through the ticking in several months. These pillows, half a dozen a day. Take off the pillow case and the quills sticking out along the seam look like a spine. Not good. Can I still get decent quality feather pillows without spending an arm an a leg?

cheap pillows in paris

Where can I purchase cheap pillows in Paris? I'm going to be in Paris for the weekend, and am thinking of checking this. So, how do I arm myself on the cheap? I'm utterly unfamiliar with Paris (never been there before) but I'm staying on Champs-Elysées if that helps.

To sleep, perchance to dream...

How do you shop for a new bed and pillows when they don't let you sleep at the store? My SO and I are in the market for a new mattress. But how do you know whether or not you'll like the extra-firm or the pillow-top or whatever that you "tried out" at the store when you get it home and need to rest? Even if there's a 30 day money back guarantee, we would prefer to live without the hassle. What's the best practice here? Is there anything better than trial and error?

Help break my fall.

Where can I buy the most throw pillows for the least amount of money? I want to buy a whole bunch of big soft pillows or cushions.

Requirements:

1. Price: cheap! I can buy rink-a-dink pillows at bargain outlets here in my neighborhood for about $8 apiece. If I wanted ten of them, that's $80 plus tax. Unacceptable! If I was to spend that much cash, they'd have to be bigger and better.

2. Quality: low, they are for sitting on the floor. They don't have to be attractive, but they shouldn't be disgusting. No secondhand. I can make my own covers for them.

3. Size/shape: no preference. The larger the better.

Perhaps you know a place? Perhaps you work somewhere where you can get me a discount (you will be rewarded)? Or know someone who does? Or have some sort of creative solution?

stinky pillows

I bought some nice down pillows for myself, and they smell really weird! I have tried to Febreze 'em, and I ran them through the wash according to the care instructions, but they still emit the odour. Has anyone else ever had such a problem that could offer some advice to me?

Pillows, pillows everywhere

What is with the ubiquity of pillows? As I understand it, pillows were once a symbol of royalty or wealth. Most normal people just slept on mattresses. And by mattresses I mean bundles of straw, etc. Obviously we've come a long way in terms of nighttime comfort, but the rise (or fall, as the case may be) of the pillow from luxury item to convenience of the everyman baffles me. Using a pillow strikes me as quite singular; what other ergonomic device do we use to mold our body into a shape that it is not built for? Good office chairs make sure to sit us upright so the straightness of our spine is supported, good shoes seek to mimic the natural arc of our feet, etcetera. A pillow does just the opposite in forcing your head into an unnaturally elevated position!

Do we as humans truly need our head cocked above our body while we sleep? If that is the case, is there historical/anthropological/paleontological evidence of the use of pillows or pillow-like apparatus in the days of yore? Or is the pillow just another gimmick product, albeit an extremely successful one at this point, that we feel obligated to buy simply for the fact that living without one has become nearly inconceivable? (I, after all, know no one who sleeps without a pillow. Do you?)

Pillows

NotAPepsiBlueFilter(IPromise):Has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) with memory, water, or non-standard pillows ? [MI] My neck gets painfully stiff whenever I get up. I'm guessing that it's a combination of stress and the crappiness of my pillows. I was at one of those medical stores looking over the pillows and some of them are quite expensive. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with contour/ergonomic (and as seen on TV! and in cooperation with NASA! pillows?

The Chillow might be a great help in enduring the hot Texas summer, but it could also be a gimmick. Are any metafilter readers familiar with this product?
