Pre-paid/pay-as-you-go cell phone solely for picture messaging? My brother and his girlfriend are currently separated by most of the length of California. She is 6 months pregnant, and they will likely not see each other again until right before the baby is born. She would like to text him pictures of her growing belly while they are apart.

Catch: Due to ridiculous circumstances I won't go into, my brother CAN NOT get picture messages on his phone. This is not something that can be changed. At all. He also does not have a computer and will not use email. This will also never change.

So, I'd like to send him, as a gift, a pre-paid cell phone or some other relatively inexpensive device on which he can get pictures of his baby growing. I know next to nothing about these things, and after looking through the previous threads still have the following questions:

1. Are there pre-paid phones that can get picture messages? He will never need to talk on it, or even text on it. Just pictures.
2. If so, does anyone have experience with a good phone and/or carrier?
3. General information on good pay-as-you-go carriers?
4. Any other magic solution that will get pictures of that belly to my brother?

THANK YOU!

What do I want to do to this picture?

I have a picture I want to modify in photoshop, and I'm sure there are relevant tutorials out there on the web, but I don't know how to describe what I want to do to it. Basically, I'd like to give it the illusion of depth -- make the back wall seem further away, and give it more of a sense of perspective, so you get more of a feeling of looking into a room, and less like you're looking at a flattened image of a room. Is there a term for that? Googling for photoshop and depth has turned up a lot of stuff about depth of field, but I don't think that's what I'm looking for. I'm not looking to make anything more or less focused, so much as alter the picture's perspective.

Also, I have the black + white original of the pic I linked to, so if it'd be easier to add the 3-D effect I'm looking for first, and then colorize it later, I could do that.

I want ready-made hardware that makes my picture look like it's floating off the wall

I want to hang this picture on the wall, but in a way that makes it look like it's an inch away from the wall. I know how to make that happen with a piece of wood wood and a sawtooth hanger, but are there any ready-made hardware or system that will achieve that? The picture is not framed, it's actually printed on a sheet of metal - think one of those old fashioned tin signs. I want it on the wall, but in a way that, when you're in front of it, it looks like it's floating off the wall, detached from it by about an inch.

Here's how I've done this before: I take a wood block, cut smaller than the object I want to hang, and attach it (usually with glue) to the back of it. Then I take a simple sawtooth hanger and nail/screw it to the wood and voila. So I'm actually hanging the wood block on the wall, and the picture is attached to the wood block. The final distance from my picture to the wall is the thickness of the wood block. This is how it looks.

Tell me someone came up with a picture hanging system that does exactly that and I can buy at Ace Hardware and not have to deal with cutting and painting and gluing wood blocks?

As for some of the existing solutions out there, this won't work because I need to sell each object individually and ready to hang; and this won't work because, even if I didn't mind the edges showing in front, they're too flat and the picture doesn't hang far enough from the wall.

So, what's ready-made and cheap and will solve my problem?

Frame is distracting from content

Is there an easy fix for a faint scratch on an pure black picture frame? I have artwork finished and framed and only just now noticed a faint scratch on the frame. The frame is the basic all-black style that is very common now. I do think the frame is wood, but it is completely smooth--no wood grain shows so that the black looks like a lacquer or enamel. The scratch is very faint; it only mars the topmost finish.

Has anyone had any luck with those touch-up pens for wood scratches? Any other suggestions? (not an option to repaint or refinish: the piece is out of my hands in a couple of days so it's either an easy fix or leave it as is) But now that I know the scratch is there, I can't look at anything else!

What are some good, fun, little Internet surprises? More like this, less like Goatse. Little things you can make and send to a stranger/acquaintance/friend/lover/imaginary Internet person. Some things I use for this purpose are someecards.com and the above puri site. I'm always looking for more.

Key features:
* Free or for a nominal fee
* Surprising, inspiring, creative, fun, silly
* Not necessarily romantic

Yes, I can draw something in Paint and attach it to an e-mail, or take a picture and send it to someone, but I'm looking for something a little more unexpected. I feel like I've seen threads like this in AskMe before, but I can't find any of them!

PhotoshopFilter: I'm looking for two things - recent photoshopped hoax pictures sent in by someone in the audience that the mainstream media has mistakenly printed or put on TV. Also any tips on detecting photoshopped photos would be appreciated. Even better if someone on the 'net outed them before MSM caught it. Sure - we've all seen the George Bush reading the upside down kids book, and the shark bites chopper guy. Anything else you have seen that recently has made it onto local television news, a news website, or into a local paper would be greatly appreciated, so would any tips on detecting photoshopped pictures. Photoshoppers are getting so much better than the MSM is at detecting them.

Knot a potato?

GardenFilter: We just harvested some potatoes and came across these potato-like knot things. We found about five or six in a bed that hosted both potatoes and garlic, though they were found kinda far from the garlic and well under ground—at least four inches. What are they? Cut-up old potatoes, and babies from last year's harvest that we cellared, were what we seeded with. We grow organic and did get a slight case of the potato bug, but again, not sure it's relevant

Inside they have the consistency of a potato or a root. Didn't see them obviously attached to a plant. Thought about them being garlic heads but they seemed too deep when we found them, and they're more solid than a garlic seed head, unless it fused together.

I joked with my wife that maybe they're truffles, and while I really doubt that, I wouldn't rule out a fungus of some kind.

Anyone else ever find these?

Unintentional Hilarity

Help me find a Fark comment thread that links to an article containing a viciously angry dog busting through a four month calendar. The article is about the rise of dog attacks in the summer months . . . . . . and it implies that the violence is the direct result of it being summer and never even touches the idea that maybe kids have more exposure to dogs during that time.
Hanging photographs with cheesecloth.

A two part kitchenware/decorating question. Ok, the two parts have not much to do with each other. Except they are both in my house. a) how to hang large photographic prints without frames in a way that looks cool and b) I'm making a lot of yogurt these days and straining it with cheesecloth. The cheesecloth gets kind of funky after a while. What can I use instead or how can I wash it? Hope this is kosher. 2 small questions for the price of one.

a) I'm a photographer. Both at home and for shows I'd like to be able to show photographs in a way that looks good and is cheap (aka no frames). In the past I've seen prints hung from wires strung horizontally against the wall, with the prints clipped to the wires. I've also seen little pieces of metal attached to the wall and then prints attached with magnets.

My prints are generally fairly large (13x19) with a white border around the print.

Are there any examples online about how to pull this off and make it look hip and nice? Basically the cost of frames is preventing me from doing a lot of things, both at home and for shows and I think this would be a good solution.

b) I'm making a lot of yogurt these days, based on this article by Howard McGee. At the end I strain it with cheesecloth in a strainer.

The cheesecloth gets filled up with yogurt. Normally I soak it in a pot with hot water and then squeeze it out multiple times, then let it hang to dry. It gets kind of stiff and I can never get it totally clean.

I tried putting it in the washing machine and that made it bunch up and basically ruined it. Is there anything I could use instead of cheesecloth that would work as well? Coffee filters or something? Or is there a better way to clean it?

seeking small, lovely picture molding - chopped!

I'm looking for small wooden picture framing molding, but not the minimalist/arty/metal-looking stuff. Hoping to find a good price from an online supplier that will chop the molding for me. Also, I'm picky and I tend to like the embossed molding I see - but the minimum widths seem to be 1" or wider. I'm framing postcards and other small items. I tried Googling for "small picture frame molding" but didn't get much of interest. Even 1" wide might be a possibility, but I haven't fallen absolutely in love with any of the suppliers I've found (everything is either too big, too boring, or too expensive).

My taste is reflected a little by this company (another page, but there's no pricing or buying information on their site. Also, when I called, I got a message saying they were on vacation until next week. I suspect everything is very expensive - and it's also not quite as small as I'd like (yes, they offer custom molding, but that's got to be very expensive).

I've framed with fillet before, but I'd rather avoid that.

Can you help me to find an image or series of images which when revealed section by section or one by one suggest different things about a single situation? Each section is revealed bit by bit. Each reveal throws some new light on the situtation. It is not until the final section is revealed that the whole thing makes sense. I hope the question has made sense. It is for a powerpoint presentation. I just need a single image, nothing offensive, or too grave either thanks. Perhaps it will be a series of images of the same thing each giving more information that the last.

Basically the point I am trying to illustrate is you need to have the full picture before making a decision. Part of the picture is no use!

Thanks in advance. Not sure about the category put it into computers and internet!

Help me hang my posters please

I have a large and beloved collection of People's History posters. Last year I had them mounted on thin foamcore (thinness illustrated here), thinking that would lengthen their lives, but I cannot keep them on my walls. So far I've tried two systems: 1) I put small nails above and below the posters, holding them in place between the nails. When the weather changed, almost all the posters shrunk or warped a bit, and dramatically fell from the walls. Next, I tried 2) these circles that spike into the foam (like these), and they still inexplicably just fall off the wall, leaving the spikes attached to the wall.

So, what's the best, affordable way to attach these fairly lightweight posters, without excessively scarring my rented walls?

Thanks!

Picture Books For A Super-Smart Kid

What are the cleverest, wittiest picture books you know? I'm looking for something you might recommend to a very smart kid who is still young enough to prefer picture books to chapter books. Another way of putting is, I'm looking for the picture book equivalent of McSweeney's. (I should mention that I know that McSweeney's actually does publishe some kids' books -- those are already on my list!)

Help me find my favorite childhood picture book.

I'm looking for a couple of picture books I loved as a kid, in the late eighties. Unfortunately, the only thing I have to go on is really vivid memories of the pictures. They were big hardcover books, probably at least 12 inches by 12 inches and had no words at all, just pictures. I had two books by the same author, both featuring the same family.

The first followed the family through their Christmas preparations and holiday as they bought and put up the tree, wrapped gifts, mailed cards, shopped for the Christmas turkey, went to church, opened gifts, put the tree out on the curb, and so on. Some pages contained one huge picture, some contained up to ten smaller pictures. Not every picture was all that significant, either—I remember a picture of them loading the groceries into their car in a mobbed parking lot, followed immediately by a picture of their empty parking spot with a little girl's mitten lying on the ground. Another page had small pictures of all the houses on their block—some were decorated, some not, some full of light, some dark.

The second book followed the kids (an older sister with long brown hair and a younger brother, who was blonde) throughout a really rainy day. They woke up, saw it was pouring out, put on their boots and raincoats, and went out for the day. They looked at laundry left out on the line, fed some ducks, tried to jump across a rain-swollen creek, and generally just wandered around. Then they came home, dumped their rain gear all over a mud room or a laundry room, had a hot bath (completely soaking the bathroom in the process) and a snack, watched some TV, ate dinner and went to bed. In the morning, it was sunny again.

Anyone remember these?

cant find the right photo frame in a flooded market

7" Digital photo frame with random playback and with simultaneous audio playback? For less than $80? Recommendations? Having amazingly hard time finding one. I'm finding this incredibly frustratingly hard to find. All I want is two features for under $80: ability to randomly sequence the photos, and ability to play audio in the background. On a 7" screen.

Presumably these exist. I've seen 10" photo frames that do both features but for over $100.

I dont want a 10" one. I want a 7" one. And for under $80.

There are a TON, DOZENS, of photo frames for under $80. So far every single one i've looked at either does random but does not play simultaneous audio (some even play mp3's WITHOUT pics displaying but not during pics displaying!). Others will play audio but NOT have the random-slide feature.

Its just incredible how hard to find this has been, given how flooded the digital photo frame market is right now.
